A Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling CHILDREN’S STORYBOOK COMES to LIFE REGINA, November 22, 2010 – Globe Theatre is making the famous story of the Ugly Duckling come to life this holiday season with HONK! A Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling, running NOV 25 to DEC 26. Our production team has paired with The Old Trout Puppet Workshop for the costume and set design. Judd Palmer and Pityu Kenderes have spent the past two weeks at the theatre working with props, wardrobe and carpentry. With them they have brought their originality and creativity to an incredible design based on the esthetic of puppetry and the imagination of a child. That spirit is what drives the design elements in HONK!. The stage features a 7 foot story book which the characters use as a gangway, creating the illusion that story is coming to life. There are very few set-pieces or furnishings; the actors themselves comprise a "mobile set", wearing costumes and accessories that serve whatever property or furniture functions are needed. Through their own movements, choreographed and otherwise, they create the spaces in which each scene can unfold. The costumes worn by many of the characters are made from paper printed with text from a vintage copy of “The Ugly Duckling”. More than 1,000 individual feathers were hand-cut; 140 yards of fabric was specially printed; 230 yards of tyvek was used for costumes and 10 gallons of white glue was used for paper mache. To support the creation of this production an additional dozen prop, costume and carpentry builders were brought in With its cast, costumes and exuberant music, HONK! A Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling is a must see show this holiday season. A fowl play has never been quite this much fun! -30-
