JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Technical Director
Company: Spectra Venue Management

Reports to: Theater Operations Manager
FLSA: Hourly - Non-Exempt
SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for establishing the technical requirements, equipment, and manpower
requirements, including lighting, sound, set design and construction to service events at the Colony Theater, as
well as coordinating necessary maintenance backstage maintenance. This is a part-time on-call event-based,
backstage/production manager position. This position is also responsible for filling in as the “manager on duty”
in the absence of the Theater Operations Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Under the direction of the Theater Operations Manager, works with the theater clients to determine the
stagehand manpower required for production work.
o Informs clients and sub-contractors on methods for hanging sound, lighting, and audiovisual equipment
at the theater.
o Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of
lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
o Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs,
necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
o Designs and maintains lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and
projects; assists guest designers and arts with technical matters.
o Advises production managers, lighting and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and
usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of
approved technical designs.
o Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of
facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by clients renting the facility.
o Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the
repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
o Responsible for tracking, completing and submitting the stagehand payroll sheets to the Theater
Operations Manager for review and approval.
o Direct and supervise stagehands within parameters of company policies and union rules.
o Study technical riders, light plots, electrical requirements, and hanging plots as to the complexity and
feasibility of hanging a road show or local production in the facility. Also, provides solutions that work
to the benefit of the facility and the client.
o Demonstrates an on-going awareness of safety issues. Develop and implement safety policy and
procedures for stagehands.
o Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises union labor employees in relation to stage work performed in the facility. Carries out supervisory
responsibilities in accordance with Spectra Venue Management’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities
include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work appraising
performance; rewarding; disciplining employees in conjunction with Human Resources; addressing complaints
and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or equivalent desired. College degree in related field preferred.
At least five years of backstage/production experience in a theater required.
At least three years of supervisory experience in a backstage/production role in a theater setting required.

Possess a strong working knowledge of back-stage theatrical productions.
Broad technical knowledge of theater equipment and its use.
Ability to effectively supervise backstage production crew.
Ability to read and understand technical “riders” for stage presentations.
Ability to create lighting and sound specifications for stage presentations.
Ability to work long, often-irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as required by the
events.
o Excellent interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills required.
o Possess a strong attention to detail.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and
be internet proficient.

No certifications are required.

While performing the responsibilities of the Technical Director Job, the employee is required to talk and hear.
The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is
occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch
or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
This position will require a considerable amount of walking, climbing, stooping, and possibly heavy lifting.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the responsibilities of the Technical Director, these work environment characteristics are
representative of the environment the Technical Director will encounter. Reasonable accommodations may be

The Technical Director works both, in an office setting with minimal adverse exposure to environmental
hazards, and in indoor and outdoor work settings with mild adverse exposure to environmental hazards. The
incumbent must be able to climb stairs and ladders and walk long distances to access all areas of the facility.
The noise level in the work environment is usually mild to loud.
