Chair’s Notes
Attending an Ithaca College Theatre production is like getting in on the
ground floor of a great investment. You’re seeing shows of professional
quality that are designed, built, and performed by students at the very
beginning of their journey as theatre artists. The 2013 –14 season is
another kind of journey for the audience—one of discovery, truth-telling,
fervent beliefs, and the captive imagination. The shows we’ve chosen this
year are intended to challenge all of us to think about what we say, how
we conduct ourselves, and what to do when we lose our way. These are
powerful stories based on incidents of fact and fiction, and the blurred
line between the two. We’ve book-ended the season with plays by writers
who were inspired (or horrified, rather) by the behavior of our fellow
human beings, and we've peppered the months in between with
compelling stories and glorious music, full of wit and passion.
As teachers, we are constantly managing the push-and-pull between
process and product. Our students are learning right in front of your eyes,
as these productions provide the laboratory for practicing their craft—
whether it’s as managers producing the shows, designers and technicians
telling the visual and physical story through sets, costumes, lights, and
sound, or actors seeking truth in performance. Our faculty and staff
lead the journey for a little while in classes, rehearsals, and production
meetings, but now you witness the product; a new part of the process
begins: how do you maintain its integrity and adapt to audience response
in the moment? All of those lessons are being taught during the week
of performance, and they require your involvement.
Ithaca College has a century-old legacy of fostering talented young
people—our alums grace the stages and shops of Broadway, regional
theatres, film, and television. But it begins here when you, the audience,
settle in, turn off your smart phones (please!), and let the words of Anna
Deavere Smith, the magic of Stephen Sondheim, the wit of David Ives,
the charm of Chabrier, the collaborative spirit of the Civilians, and the
power of Arthur Miller affect you. The audience gives the theatre a
present and our students a purpose, and Ithaca College ensures that
theatre has a future.
Thank you for being a part of it. We couldn’t do this without you.
