Subscription: $5 yearly for non-patron supporters and/ or designated theater members. Material for publication should be submitted by the third Monday of January, March, May, September, and October and will be printed as space permits. Send Callboard listings to the Executive Director and all others to the Newsletter Editor. Submissions without names will not be published. THE OHIO COMMUNITY THEATRE ASSOCIATION Volume LVI, Issue 5 October, 2008 How sweet it was…. Another OCTA Conference is in the history books. Although numbers were down this year, the excerpts and activities were all still excellent. Ask any of the First Timers who went home with a ton of candy. From the youth excerpts on Friday night to the Pirate invasion on Monday, it was a theatrical weekend. We saw some classic theater with Inherit the Wind and Of Mice and Men, fun light theatre with Nunsense and The Complete Works of Shakespeare, abridged, and also the hilarious Weekend Comedy (which made us all have to go to the bathroom) and the beautifully done Boston Marriage. Check inside this edition for the long list of awards… from newsletters and excerpts to sets and costumes. I picked on the Southwest Region this year when handing out the newsletter awards. With over 110 member theaters, we should have a gigantic newsletter and website competition. However, we found that most of the newsletters fail to put in any OCTA news for their readers. After each Board meeting, a synopsis of meeting information will be emailed to all newsletter editors when we have addresses available. Plus, you should always be reminding your readers of the competitions, scholarships, and opportunities available through OCTA. Second VicePresident/Webmaster extraordinaire Rick Lee is working on revamping the website competition guidelines for the next year. We’ll have lots more information for you after the October Board Retreat to keep you in the loop of all the new and exciting things OCTA has in store for the next year. Although there were lots of familiar names on the retiring Board Members and Regional Reps list, most of those people will not become strangers. Kathie Brennan, Peggy Kenney, and Patt Robb all retired from the Board, however Peggy and Patt will now be part of the Southwest Regional Rep group. Joe Barton and Linda Roll retired as Regional Reps and will both now be on the Board—Linda will be the 2009 Conference Chair. Other retiring reps include Georgia Bobinsky, Tracy Botos, Pam Harris, Marilyn Hubbard, Ritch Stoops, Susan Watson, Ginny Wise, and Donna Wollenslegel. A number of these people you will still be seeing at delegate meetings, regional festivals, and next year’s conference as they are still delegates for their theaters and or part of the 2009 Steering Committee. Welcome to our newest Board Member Mike Robb. Hopefully by now, all Conference attendees have come down from their sugar highs and are already thinking about their costumes for the “Yo! Ho! Ho! On the O-HI-O!” set for September 4-7, 2009. Christi Thomas Cuelines So you want to be an Idol?? From Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Constantine Maroulis (The Wedding Singer), Diana DeGarmo (Hairspray), and now Taylor Hicks (Grease), "Idols" are making their way to Broadway from the small screen. In the August Playbill magazine, Taylor Hicks was quoted as saying that he strives to be a seasoned and well-rounded entertainer and one of the places to do that is…."the stage." At the 2008 annual conference, OCTA held its own "Idol" contest. With preliminaries on Friday night, ten contestants went on to sing again on Sunday night with "voting by dollars" turned in on Monday morning. Jamie Allen of Van Wert (Northwest) was the top "Idol" and John Masterson of Cincinnati (Southwest) was the runnerup. Congrats to all the contestants who did a super job.
