THE POLISH CULTURAL INSTITUTE
Established in New York in 2000, The Polish
Cultural Institute is a diplomatic mission dedicated
to nurturing and promoting cultural ties between
the United States and Poland, both through
American exposure to Poland's cultural
achievements, and through exposure of Polish
artists and scholars to American trends, institutions,
and professional counterparts. The Institute takes
an active collaborative role in the organization,
promotion, and actual production of a broad
range of cultural events in theater, music, film,
literature, and the fine arts. Its events range in
scope from the 160-seat Joe’s Pub to the 2,700seat Avery Fisher Hall. It has collaborated with
such cultural institutions as the Brooklyn Academy
of Music, St. Ann’s Warehouse, La MaMa, E.T.C.,
Lincoln Center, Museum of Modern Art, PEN
World Voices Festival, and many more.

Is a professional non-profit theater company based
in New York City. Its mission is to give a public
theatrical voice to those who are marginalized;
to promote the genre of immigrant theatre as
a valid American theatre form; and to be an
artistic model for intercultural relations. Founded
in 1988 by Artistic Director Marcy Arlin, ITP
presents traditional and experimental plays by
and about immigrants to the US and worldwide.
It works with multicultural casts and artistic staff to
reflect the diversity of New York and introduce
immigrant and American audiences to challenging
theatre works. ITP has premiered over 400 plays
and worked with theatre artists from over 90
nations/ethnicities. Notable projects: co-production
with Artheater/Lowskin Productions of Koln,
Germany; Heresy/Progress by Sabina Berman/
Matei Visniec; 365 Days/365 Plays by SuzanLori Parks; Journey Theater, a theatre project
working with survivors of war and torture with
playwright Ruth Margraff; Unexpected Journeys:
Plays by Women from Muslim Cultures; American
Dreams staged readings in immigrant communities;

He made his debut in 2001 with Sandbox, which
was staged at 11 theatres and translated into
German, English, Hungarian, Czech, and Italian.
Among Walczak’s other plays are The Journey to
the Inside of the Room, staged at 5 theatres and
translated into German, Dutch, and Lithuanian; The
Night Bus, translated into German and awarded
the jury prize at the 2007 annual Heidelberg Theater
Days; The River, the Mine, translated into German
and Russian; and The First Time, translated into
German and French, which was awarded the main
prize at the Forum for Young Authors at the 2006
Heidelberger Stückemarkt. Walczak also wrote two
plays for children: The Last Daddy and The Sad
Princess.
MARCY ARLIN
(SHE, The First Time)
Is so pleased to have the opportunity to work on this
project with Ms. Arlin. NY: Unlucky Man In The
Yellow Cap (NY Fringe); Permission A Rock
Mythology, The Ring (NY premier). Lisa has been
seen regionally as Molly Rolston in The Mousetrap,
Rosalind in Moon Over Buffalo, Sheila in Hair
and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Lisa had the opportunity to dabble in some writing,
directing and producing over the last couple years
and will also be seen in her first short film adventure
Do The Crime, due out later this year. This ride would
not be possible without the love and support of

Founded OBIE-winning ITP in 1988. Recent directing
work includes the German-language translation of
Caridad Svich’s Tropic of X (Artheater of Koln,
Germany) and Jovanka Bach’s Marko the Prince
(Barrow Group Theater). She is an original member
of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, Core
Member of Theatre without Borders, No Passport.
Fulbright Senior Specialist 2005-09 to the Babes
Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania, and Masaryk

JELENA STUPLJANIN
PIOTR KRUSZCZYNSKI

Recent NY theater: Parkesburg (dir. by Holli Harms,
Manhattan Theatre Source); Marko the Prince
(dir. Marcy Arlin, ITP/Barrow Group Theater);
The Birthmark (dir. Scott Barrow, Stages on the
Sound); Progress (dir. Ian Morgan) and Heresy
(dir. Marcy Arlin, HERE); Wellspring (dir. Elyse
Singer, Hourglass Group); Retzach (59E59 Theaters);
Contradiction (Columbia University). She will be
seen in the European premiere of the Serbian feature
film The Ambulance this winter in Belgrade. She
is shooting the feature Jelena, Katarina, Marija in
NYC playing Katarina. Jelena holds a BA in acting
from the National Academy of Dramatic Arts,
and an MA in Theater Studies from the University
of Arts, both in Belgrade, Serbia. She was granted
a full scholarship from HRH Princess Elizabeth
Karageorgevic to perfect her studies at the Lee
Strasberg Institute in NYC.

Graduated from the Architecture Department of the
Poznan University of Technology and the directing
department at The Aleksander Zelwerowicz State
Theatre Academy in Warsaw. Directing credits of
international plays include Tankred Dorst, Esther
Vilar, Marius von Mayenburg, Conor McPherson,
Brad Fraser, Jean Claude Sussfeld, Lars Noren,
Anton Chekhov. He has adapted classics of Polish
20th century drama by Slawomir Mrozek and
Tadeusz Rozewicz, as well as texts of the younger
generation of Polish playwrights: Lidia Amejko and
Michal Walczak (Sandbox – the world premiere,
The Mine). He has also staged Chekhov (Three
Sisters, Platonov). He has staged his productions
in Poznan, Krakow, Gdansk, and Warsaw, as well
as in the smaller towns of Kalisz, Jelenia Gora, and
Gniezno. From 2002 to 2008 he was Artistic
Director of the Szaniawski Drama Theatre in
Walbrzych, and he turned this industrial, poor, coal
mining town into one of the most important theatrical
sites in Poland. Many of the most famous Polish
directors of the younger generation, such as Jan
Klata and Maja Kleczewska, started their careers
in Walbrzych. He is a recipient of many theatrical
awards in Poland.

Born in Bulgaria, Hristov graduated from the National
Academy of Theater and Film Arts with an MFA.
He has played over 70 roles on the stages and sets
in Europe and the USA, working with some of the
most reputable directors in the world: Robert De
Niro, Edward Pomerantz, Ridley Scott, Sidney Lumet,
Marcy Arlin, Michael Baez, Robert Margolis. Mr.
Hristov has been awarded in several film festivals.
As a head of development in the company Baez
Entertainment, he produced over 100 commercials
and the movie Racket which was selected in 6 film
festivals and won Best Film in The Directors Cut in
NYC and Best Cinematography in the Texas IFF.
LISA HUGO
MICHAL WALCZAK
(Playwright, Sandbox/The First Time)
Trained as a theater director at the Theatre Academy
in Warsaw and is one of the most popular and
prolific Polish playwrights of the younger generation.
ROBERT MONACO
(Set Design)
Hails from Long Island. He has been designing
scenery in the greater metropolitan area for more
than ten years. Robert was nominated for a 2007
Independent Theater Award for his design for
The Palooka and he received an excellence in
design award from the NYC Fringe Festival in 2006
for Kiss and Cry. In addition to working as a
professional designer, he is an adjunct faculty
member at Marymount Manhattan College where
he designs scenery and instructs in scenic carpentry
and scenic art techniques.
CHRISTOPHER WESTON
(Lighting Design)

has designed in a number of New York City theaters,
including the Kitchen, John Houseman, Tribeca
Performing Arts Center, Center Stage/New York,
Theatre for the New City, Raw Space, Connelly
Theatre, Kraine Theatre, Lamb’s Theatre, Bank Street
Theatre, Bosakowski Theatre, Miranda Theatre,
The Old American Can Factory.
ELIZABETH RHODES
(Sound Design)
Immigrants’ Theatre Project credits include Marko
the Prince and Journey Theater. NY credits include
the world premiere of Steve Martin's adaptation of
The Underpants, premieres of John Patrick Shanley's
Dirty Story and Sailor Song. LAByrinth credits
include Stephen Belber's A Small Melodramatic
Story, Robert Glaudini's Dutch Heart of Man and
Erin Cressida Wilson's Trail of Her Inner Thigh.
Other NY credits include Chuck Mee's Paradie
Park (dir. Daniel Fish/Signature); The Winter’s Tale
(dir. Barry Edelstein/Classic Stage Company); Trial
by Water (Ma-Yi); A Soldier’s Wife (The Mint);
Ajax 100% Fun (Lightbox). Regional credits include
Lee Blessing's Winning Streak (George Street
Playhouse); Stones in His Pocket (Alley Theatre);
The Colored Museum (Crossroads).
PAWEL DAMPC
(Music Composition, Sandbox)
Graduated from the Music Academy in Poznan,
Poland. As a composer he has worked with theaters
in Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw, Walbrzych, Kalisz,
Gniezno, Plock, and Zittau (Germany). He has also
composed for and accompanied famous Polish
singers like Maryla Rodowicz, Ryszard Rynkowski,
and Katarzyna Skrzynecka, and is a member of
the very popular Polish pop music group De Mono.
GRAINNE COEN
(Props, Sandbox/The First Time;
Costumes, The First Time)
BA in English and Spanish from St. Louis University.
She worked in London as a painter's assistant
for the Liverpool Biennial founder James Moores
and fashion editor assistant for W Magazine’s
Alex White. She studied Costume Design and
Construction at the Ministry of Culture’s Applied
Art School in Madrid, Spain, also working as a
decorative painter in specializing in 17th Century
Motifs. She built costumes for Lola Canales of
Lavapies, Madrid, Broadway and opera which have
been photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity
Fair, Steven Meisel for Vogue and Bruce Weber
for an ad campaign. She has worked as costume
designer for feature film Flesh and Stone and
designed, styled and built wardrobes for MTV,
Greek Vogue, Oyster, Coach, MGM, Cloak, Toshiba
and InBev. Theatre work includes: American
Repertory Theatre, Glimmerglass Opera, and
university theaters.
JOLANTA LOBACZ
(Costumes, Sandbox)
Currently employed as costume designer for the
Polski Theatre in Poznan, Poland, for many years
she worked as a hair and make up artist for opera
and musical productions in Poznan’s Wielki Theatre
(including Umberto Giordano’s Andre Chénier,
co-produced by Placido Domingo and the National
Opera in Washington). She is a co-founder and
a teacher at the MASK School of Make-Up
Design in Poznan.
RASHA ZAMAMIRI
(Assistant Director/Stage Manager/Props)
A graduate from High Point University, NC is honored
to be surrounded by such a talented group of people.
Past NY Stage Manager credits include On The
Line (78th St Theatre Lab); My Brave Face (Don't
Tell Mama); Every Play Ever Written (The Brick);
SheWolves (Gene Frankel); and Mountain Hotel
(Havel Festival). Rasha also works as a professional
actress and singer when she's not working behind
the scenes. Past credits include Schatzie, Nunsense,
Stoop on Orchard St (1st National Tour); Hijab,
Respect, and her favorite role to date Toinette in
Imaginary Invalid.
JAHNU STAYTON
(Assistant Stage Manager)
Jahnu Stayton was born for creative expression
and overcoming odds. An artist, a poet, an actor,
he has performed for Community Theater, in a
Fan Film called Batman Reborn (Grandma’s
Basement Productions, dir. Nicholas Ortiz); in theater
productions for the LaGuardia Performing Arts
Center in Long Island City such as Dracula Alma
(dir. Will Koolsbergen); Our Country Is Good
and Cabaret (dir. John Henry Davis); as well
as in an earlier production with the Immigrants’
Theatre Project entitled 365 Days/365 Plays
(co-directors Marcy Arlin and Henry Akona).
He also worked behind the scenes in various
student movies and plays, though this is his first
time as Assistant Stage Manager. Jahnu Stayton
is a Theatre and Communications major at
LaGuardia Community College.
VADIM MALINSKIY
(Technical Director)
Recent credits at 59E59 Theaters include
Outside Inn, Rainbow Kiss, The Jazz Age,
and The Park Avenue Whirl. He production
managed 1001 for Page 73 Productions and was
a technical director for Ars Nova's productions of
Jollyship Wiz Bang and Boom.
