2014 Ohio State Thespian Conference
Thespians Are Sweet
The New Flavor of 2014
Dublin Scioto High School March 28-30, 2014
DETAILS
REGISTRATION
The 2014 edition of the Ohio Education Theatre
Association State Thespian Conference will be
held at Dublin Scioto School, near Columbus,
March 28-30, 2014. More than 1,500 theatre
students, teachers, and professionals will gather
for an exciting weekend of theatre events. From
seeing some of the state’s best high school
productions to attending workshops in both
performance and technical subjects and
competing for scholarships and awards, this is a
weekend no high school theatre student should
miss.
This year marks a completely new way to register
your troupe for our conference. The registration
process is now accomplished entirely online. This
process should help make huge improvements in
our accuracy of registration, including spelling of
students names, scheduling shuttle buses,
ordering t-shirts, and even ticketing. No later than
December 1, 2013, our registration site will open
for the 2014 State Conference. The site will be
located at: http://www.planetreg.com/OEDTA2014
Early Bird Deadline : Friday, February 7, 2014
The following pages detail all of the exciting
opportunities available at this year’s State
Thespian Conference.
For those who have
attended in years past, please note that this year
brings many new and exciting changes to our
organization. It is very important to read through
this entire document and pay particular attention
to items with the
post-it note, as that will
indicate
something that has
changed
dramatically from the past.
WHO CAN ATTEND
The State Thespian Conference is an educational
event exclusively for high school students, their
teachers, and adult chaperones.

CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITIES
MAKE THE MOST OF CONFERENCE
SEE THE ALL-OHIO SHOW
Each year students from across the state audition
to be part of the all-state show. This show is
designed and performed by these talented
students. This year’s show, Good ‘N’ Plenty, will
be presented twice on Friday night. Tickets will
be available, first-come/first-served, on the ticket
form that will be available in late February.
Information for auditioning for the All-Ohio show
will be available at:
www.ohedta.org/opportunities/all-ohio-show
BRING A MARATHON PRODUCTION
Schools are invited to prepare a 45 minute or less
cutting of a show or one act to perform during
conference. These shows must be low-tech or
no-tech as they will be performed in a classroom
space with no lighting or sound equipment. There
will be no storage space for props or costumes,
and no formal changing rooms. While these
shows are unscreened, schools must register the
show and send a synopsis of the show at time of
registration. Please bear in mind that no troupe
may bring more than two performances to
conference. The deadline to register a show is
Friday, February 7, 2014.
SHOWS
Each year the conference gives exciting
opportunity to see many different shows from
around the state. These shows range from a full
length show to a 45 minute cutting of a show.
Most shows require a general admission ticket to
be admitted to the show. Please keep in mind
that these tickets will be available on a first-come,
first-serve basis in late February. All troupes that
are registered will receive an email in late
February to go online to register for tickets. The
website will be able to give automatic feedback on
availability of tickets for each show. You will
receive confirmation of your shows immediately.
These reservations will need to be completed by
the troupe director.
Please keep in mind that while most shows will
“sell out” by the start of conference, students are
encouraged to go to the door five minutes before
the published start time of a performance. All
open seats will be released at that time.
BUY A CONFERENCE T-SHIRT
Conference T-Shirts with this year’s logo and
theme will once again be available. Small thru XLarge T-Shirts will be available for $ 12.00 each.
XX-Large T-Shirts will be available for $ 15.00
each. T-Shirts must be purchased at time of
registration. No extra T-Shirts will be available at
conference. The deadline to order T-Shirts is
Friday, February 7, 2014.
GUIDEBOOK
In effort to run a more environmentally
friendly conference, and to help keep you
updated with changes that occur throughout the
weekend, we are changing the way we handle the
program that used to be handed out at
conference. This year we will begin to use an
application called GUIDEBOOK for our scheduling
purposes.
This is a free app that can be
downloaded to any Android or iOS device. We
strongly suggest that all delegates download the
GUIDEBOOK and load the Ohio Educational
Theatre Association page before attending
conference. This app will allow us to push out
any changes that happen throughout the
weekend, and also allow students to plan their
weekend activities. Don’t have a device? NO
WORRIES! Have your students make friends,
and urge your students to share with those that
don’t have a device. Please remember that all
electronic devices do need to be turned OFF
during all performances.
CREATE A TROUPE DISPLAY
Schools are invited to bring a display relating to
either this year’s conference theme, Thespians
are Sweet, or that reflects the activities of their
troupe. This is a great opportunity to display
programs, photographs, and portfolios…anything
that will fit within a 4’wx4’dx8’t area. Schools
must provide their own card table, if you require
one. No electricity will be provided. The deadline
to register to participate is Friday, February 7,
2014.
RECOGNIZE AN OUTSTANDING
ADMINSTRATOR
In an effort to recognize principals and
superintendents who support theatre within their
schools, Ohio EdTA has created an award to
honor administrators. If you are an active troupe
registered for conference and wish to nominate an
administrator, please visit:
www.ohedta.org/opportunities/awards
The deadline to nominate an administrator is
Friday, February 7, 2014.
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS
Individual Events (knows as IEs) give students an
opportunity to receive a rating and feedback from
theatre professionals.
IEs are available in
performance categories as well as technical
categories. Any registered delegate is eligible to
register for IEs. Each troupe may send only one
entry per category and each student may
participate in one event only.

for students with the potential to be leaders in the
field of theatre education.

interviewed before a panel of judges, including an
Ohio Thespian Troupe Director, a College
Representative, and a representative of the
Educational Theatre Association Home Office.

throughout the conference weekend. OEdTA
strives to bring in professionals throughout Ohio
and beyond to present workshops on many
different theatre topics. From dance to voice,
from theatre lighting to props made of cardboard,
there is a workshop for everyone. Workshops will
be listed in GUIDEBOOK prior to conference.
TECH CHALLENGE
On Saturday night this annual competition for
technicians takes place. Teams of 6 students
compete for prizes in events such as prop building
(with DUCT tape), costume quick change, lighting
fixture focus, and drop folding, just to name a few.
There is a registration cost of $ 10.00 per team. A
school is allowed one team of 6 students. The
deadline to register for tech challenge is Friday,
February 7, 2014.
COLLEGE AUDITIONS
Each year we offer the opportunity for students to
audition for colleges from across the country in
one location.
These college auditions are
handled by Get Acceptd. For requirements or to
register for the auditions, please visit
app.getacceptd.com/ohiothespians . There is a
registration fee of $ 15.00 per student.
COLLEGE AND VENDOR FAIR
Visit with colleges and theatrical vendors from
Ohio and beyond. These colleges and vendors
are here to discuss their programs and products
