PRESS RELEASE CONTACT: Laura Kratt, Director of Cultural Events 704.233.8302 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aquila Theatre Presents Striking Adaptation of The Bard’s Classic Tragedy Wingate, N.C. – January 18, 2016 – Aquila Theatre will bring its innovative style and physical approach to William Shakespeare’s most famous and heart-breaking play, “Romeo and Juliet” at The Batte Center’s McGee Theatre on Sunday, January 24th at 3 p.m.. Recognized world-wide as one of theater’s most iconic couples, Romeo and Juliet are the very archetype of tragic young lovers. Set against a backdrop of warring households, what ensues is an epic and enduring story of romance, murder and mystery. Desiree Sanchez directed and adapted this production and “The show flows beautifully,” says Sam Hall of DC Metro Theatre Arts. “Locations, scenes, and affective styles transition into and out of each other with seamless elegance, and the action never falters. What the revised script loses in variety it gains in poignant clarity. The emotions come full out, are both profound and believable.” Praised by The New Yorker for productions that are “Beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect,” Aquila Theatre was founded in London in 1991 but is now part of the New York’s vibrant theatrical landscape. In pursuit of their mission to make classical works widely accessible, Aquila has become the foremost producer of touring classical theatre in the United States, visiting 50-60 American cities per year. The Batte Center presents Aquila Theatre as part of Wingate University’s Connected Campus 2016: Love and The Renaissance, a multidisciplinary series that marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.
