WHY CHOOSE GROUNDLINGS FOR YOUR WEDDING?
 A Unique and Historic Building
The Groundlings Theatre is a building full of charm, atmosphere and history, making it a perfect
venue for couples wanting something a little different.
The building was completed in 1785, making it over
225 years old. Built by the Beneficial Society, the Old
Beneficial School is the first free school for poor boys
in England.
Elizabeth Dickens was attending a ball at the building
on 6th February 1812, subsequently given birth to
Portsmouth's most famous literary figure, Charles
Dickens.
It is one of the most haunted buildings in Portsmouth.
 Transparent, Fixed Pricing
While Groundlings offers a choice of standard wedding
packages, we recognise every wedding is unique, and
so we will consult with the couple in details to create a bespoke event that is fully costed with
itemised listings.
The price quoted on enquiry is the price you will pay, and there are no hidden extras.
The itemised quote can be adapted to suit budgets and changes in plans, up until the point that the
deposit is paid.
 Spread the Cost of the Event
Weddings are expensive investments, and so we allow couple to spread the cost of the event over
three payments. A £500 non refundable deposit confirms the booking and then monthly payments
can be set up or whatever suits your needs. The balance required no later than 4 weeks before the
event.
 Beautifully Restored Decor
The Grade 2* listed building has been lovingly restored to
capture its original Georgian elegance, with themed rooms that
reflect the building's past.
 Excellent Parking and Transport Facilities
Guests are able to park in our enclosed car park with
space for up to 20 cars. The walled area provides additional
privacy for guests.
For those not wishing to drive, we have an excellent
relationship with Citywide Taxis, based just round the corner, who can offer a 10% discount on cabs
booked through us.
Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station is a few minutes walk away, as is a major bus terminal.
The Continental Ferry Port is a few minutes drive away.
 A Fully Licensed Bar and Catering Service
The Old Benny Cafe Restaurant offers a full service of hot and cold meals either from a regular set
menu or specific menus can be drawn up according to individual requirements.
Catering can be provided as a finger buffet or sit down meals with table service.
The Groundlings Theatre offers two bar areas – one on the ground floor and one upstairs
adjacent to our main hire space.
 Weddings with Real Character
As a working producing theatre, Groundlings has access to a huge number of actors and facilities to
add an extra special something to a wedding. Whether this be a red carpet entrance, actors in
character or a period-themed wedding.
With many years experience managing large scale events such as movie premieres and
cultural festivals, Groundlings can create a unique and memorable event to any scale.
 Access to Props and Costumes
Wedding parties are able to hire from our many period props and our selection of over 10,000
costumes, which can be used to create a themed event, or provide some unusual ways to keep
younger guests entertained. Special hire rates apply for wedding parties.
 Fabulous Entertainment at Fabulous Prices
Our position in the entertainment industry means we have extensive contacts with a wide variety of
entertainers. So if you require a DJ, karaoke, magician, comedian, historical reenactors, we can find
you top quality people at preferential rates.
Should you wish to provide your own entertainment, this can also be accommodated, including live
bands with full tech facilities.

We require a non refundable deposit of 50%
Full payment for the cost of the wedding must be received on month prior to the wedding celebration.

Price Packages
At Groundlings we prefer to treat every wedding enquiry as unique, as there are so many things we can offer and so
many individual preferences for the happy couple. So always recommend that an appointment is made to speak with the
hospitality manager so that a bespoke quote can be drawn up.
Our quotes are completely customisable and there are many other services we can provide.
Our venue hire starts from £1,500 which gives you this incredible building exclusive to you. Then there are endless
possibilities to make your day special.

you to tailor your needs and budgets.

You will then have the opportunity to meet the artistic director about your special
day to make it the success you deserve.
