In1935EduardoandPirandellofulfilledtheartisticcooperationwithThenewsuit–adialoguedscenariobyLuigiPirandellointwoactsandthreescenes,establishedbyEduardoDeFilippowhosestaging
took place in 1937 at the Manzoni Theatre in Milan. Their project was born on the namesake Pirandello’snovellawhichwasidentifiedbyEdoardoasuitablepieceforatheatreadaptation.Edoardowas
fascinatedbythemaincharacterofthenovella,thescribeMicheleCrispucciwho,startingfromahumblesocialstate,doesnotaccepttheinheritancearrangedbythefateforhim,inordernottolosehis
owndignityandhonesty.ThePirandello’shortstorystartsexactlywiththesuitthatthepoorCrispucci
usedtowearfromimmemorialtime…andendsupwithasuitwhichseemedtotalkbyitself…Sothatthe
transfer from an old suit to a new one represents the key happening of the drama. Crispucci’s deep
loveforhiswife,despitetheevents,overflowsinalucidinsanity,whichtransformshiminakindof
contemporaryanti-herofightingagainstmen’sdulldegradingdependenceonthingsandstuff.Atthat
timeitwasaharshtext;nowadaysitissoextremelymodernthatithasinspiredanewmeeting,the
one between Michelangelo Campanale, who paints the scene by a visionary direction which was inspired to Pirandello’s poetics, and Marco Manchisi, who curates the text by loyally comparing the
drama written in 1935 with Edoardo’s redraft for RAI in 1965. So, direction and text are sewed togetherontheactorsnucleusthatmakesupthesoulofLalunanellettoCompanysincemanyyears.
