Born March 6, 1475 in
Caprese, Italy
Mother died when the boy
was only six
As a child Michelangelo kept
to himself out of perhaps
shyness or lack of affection
he was given.
Background
* At age 13, he studied
sculpture under
Bertoldo di
Giovanni
 During this time he
completed the
Madonna of the
Stairs and the Battle
of the Centaurs.

Both were made of
solid marble

While in Rome


After spending most
of his life in Florence,
Michelangelo moved
to Rome
In Rome, he carved
the Bacchus and then
the Pietà which is in
St. Peter's basilica
in Rome

Michelangelo’s The David




Michelangelo returned to
Florence where he began
work on the David.
Called the "Giant" by his
fellow Florentines =
completed in 1504
Seventeen feet tall, the
statue made David look
bigger than Goliath
David was sculpted
during almost the same
years that Leonardo da
Vinci was painting the
Mona Lisa.

began work on the
Sistine Chapel ceiling
frescoes

It took him a bit over
four years, from July of
1508 to October of 1512

What did he paint?





Across the ceiling he painted nine
episodes from the Book of Genesis.
There are representations of the stages of
creation, Adam and Eve's temptation
and fall
Noah and the Flood, figures of prophets
and angels were also shown
The Old Testament is also featured which
shows the salvation of Christianity




create a tomb for him
which was to contain
forty life-size figures
Michelangelo created
all but two slave
figures that were
never finished

Chapel in the Vatican.
Michelangelo died on
February 18, 1564 of
a “slow fever”.

Sistine Chapel, began in 1508, and was
completed in 1512.
In the beginning, Michelangelo was to
paint twelve pictures of the apostles
around the outside of the ceiling.
Central area of the ceiling to paint the
history of the Old Testament. It included
over 300 figures.

Water Lift

Water Lift - This invention consists of a
water wheel, two archimedes screws and
two towers. As the water wheel turns, the
screws turn, pushing the water up to the
highest tower. The tall tower acts as a
reservoir for gravity fed water pipes.

mechanism that drives the heliocopter.
Two men would run on the lower level,
which would rotate. The rotation would
force the upper "fans" to rotate as well,
