SPOTLIGHT January 2014 Morpheus Theatre News Winter Edition Presenting Shows Worth Seeing for nineteen years! Upcoming Events: January 24 – February 8 COCKTAILS AT PAM’S April 18 – May 3 PIRATES OF PENZANCE April 29 7:00pm G&S JRs perform Pirates June 2 & 3 CASINO FUNDRAISER Being the Perfect Hostess Isn’t Easy! Just ask Pam! It’s a fine art of pearls and gowns, repartee and knowing the difference between the maid and the cook. So when the cocktail party she is hosting descends into an evening of too many flowers, green drinks, a divorcée declaring the evils of green peppers and...charades, well it’s not really going as smoothly as Pam might wish. Delightfully quirky, this comedy by Canadian Playwright Stewart Lemoine and directed by Alice Nelson, is sure to warm you up with some laughter; or as our hostess would exclaim, “Mirth! Mirth!” Join us in January & February as we host Cocktails at Pam’s and remember, we never act on Mondays but there are plenty of other days to choose from. Every 18 months or so the Alberta Government grants Morpheus Theatre a license to hold a casino as a fundraiser! New, updated website on its way… with videos, blog posts and more! These casinos bring in up to $70,000 or more for our use in putting shows by allowing us to get the costumes, the sets, and the set dressing that bring the productions to life. This year we have been assigned Monday, June 2nd and Tuesday, June 3rd for our casino. To make these casinos work we need to fill some 36-38 shifts, 6 for each day, 6 for each evening/night, and a final 6-7 for the count room each night. At roughly $2,000 per volunteer shift, this can be a great way to support Morpheus! If you would like to volunteer for a shift or two, please give Ginette a call at the office, 403-246-2999 or email [email protected]. Coming Soon The Pirates of Penzance April 18 – May 3, 2014 If you like Gilbert & Sullivan, don’t miss our G&S JRs, the PIRATINIs, perform Pirates JR April 29th on the set of the adult version on the Victor Mitchell Stage! Spotlight Winter Edition January 2014 3 Are YOU Interested in Directing a Show with Morpheus? We also welcome directors without a show, and show ideas without a director! New Year’s Eve Glitz & Glamour Gala Thank you to all who came out to our 2nd annual fundraiser! We raised over $9000! Congratulations to Nimra AmjadArcher who won the WestJet Raffle! Morpheus Theatre invites directors to make proposals for shows to be produced during our 2014/2015 season. We encourage experienced and passionate directors to submit a letter of interest along with a resume with related theatre experience and background. Morpheus produces 4 quality shows each year (a farce or comedy, a Christmas family production, a contemporary drama, and a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta) at the Pumphouse Theatre, in both the Victor Mitchell & Joyce Doolittle Theatres. We are looking for WELL-KNOWN SHOWS with HIGH AUDIENCE POTENTIAL that fall within our four show categories. Ideally, the shows will appeal to a wide family audience (primarily 12 and up, although under 18 is not the target audience). Proposals should include the following information: * Name of director * Directing and theatre related experience * Title & Playwright of show * Cast size of show, with male/female breakdown * Why you think Morpheus should produce it * Director's Vision for the show (including overall thoughts about how it would be staged & any special effects, set ideas, costume ideas, technical considerations) * Which theatre it would work best in * Potential challenges * Any other comments or considerations At this time, we ask that you don't try to recruit production crew or check on the production rights. Please email or deliver letters of interest by January 31, 2014 to: Sean Anderson, Artistic Director, Morpheus Theatre 3512 – 5th Avenue NW Calgary, AB T2N 0V7 [email protected] WELCOME DONNA!
