The prime performance of the 2012-2013 season of Lithuanian National Drama Theatre “Cathedral”, directed by the leading Lithuanian director Oskaras Koršunovas, is a ground-breaking interpretation of the most important classical piece of Lithuanian national dramaturgy. “Cathedral” united the greatest talents of Lithuanian theatre to make a contemporary revival of the legendary Lithuanian drama about the visionary artist and builder of the most famous national cultural and religious monument – the Cathedral. What is the responsibility of the artist of a small nation? Is creativity divine or of a demonic kind? Who is the owner of a talent – the artist or the one who pays for it? These are the questions raised in Oskaras’ Koršunovas interpretation of “Cathedral”, a strikingly visual and monumental performance that brings national dramaturgy to a world-class level. In the spring of 2012 Eimuntas Nekrošius directed the first two parts of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” – “Inferno” and “Purgatory”. Later in the autumn he opened “Heaven” at the authentic historical stage of Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy. In February “Heaven” was transferred to the main stage of the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre. Set designer Mārtiņš VILKĀRSIS (Latvia) Costume designer Jolanta RIMKUTĖ Composer Vidmantas BARTULIS Euripides „BACCHAE“ : classical piece by Euripides to be directed in Lithuania for the first time Gintaras VARNAS Set designer Gintaras MAKAREVIČIUS Costume designer Juozas STATKEVIČIUS Contacts: Martin Sperr was born in 1944 in Steinberg, Lower Bavaria. He didn't finish his studies as an industrial merchant and became a student in the Max-Reinhardt Seminar. However, he did not complete these studies either. In 1965 he went to work for the Bremen Kammerspiele. In 1966, he staged his folk play “Hunting Scenes from Lower Bavaria” at the theatre and immediately became one of the most successful young German playwrights. He wrote the play when he was only 18, and it was full of his own life experiences. The play is written in a Bayern dialect. In it playwright turns against the bigotries and hypocrisies of a village life. Sperr set his drama in the Bavarian village of Reinod in 1948. His subject is the virulent sickness of Nazi Germany - a sickness that, in the playwright's view, did not even begin to wither with the demise of Hitler’s regime. As the villagers try to survive the social dislocations and economic deprivations of the post-war period, they sink into an amoral state, which knows no boundaries and lead to the complete disintegration of moral codes. Parents and children, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors all turn against each other. Sex is cruel and murder is casual; greed and vigilantism is the daily bread for the characters. The people of the village drive a mentally retarded young man to the point of suicide and a homosexual to the point of murder. Critical reception back in Italy praised Nekrošius‘ “Heaven” as “flaming with its poetical beauty”, “exceptionaly humane and divinely thrilling at the same time” and “reaching far beyond the definition of pantomime and dance and becoming the true dance theatre”. Premiere in Vilnius – April 24th 2013 Director Ferenc Molnár wrote “Liliom” in 1909 and throughout the XX century, the play had numerous interpretations in theatre as well as in cinema. Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s legendary musical “Carousel” and a few Hollywood film productions have been made from the play. Fritz Lang directed his version of “Liliom” in 1934. The play was interpreted by internationally acknowledged theatre directors such as Gábor Zsámbéki, Arpad Schilling, Michael Thalheimer and others. László Bagossy‘s “Liliom” is at its very stage of creative birth now. The director is working with a well-known Lithuanian artist, leading Lithuanian set designer Gintaras Makarevičius, as well as with a composer Gintaras Sodeika to create an unearthly yet timely nostalgic world of “Liliom”. Premiere in Vilnius – February 12th 2013 Director Eimuntas NEKROŠIUS László Bagossy is known for his works in some prominent Hungarian theatres (Katona, Orkeny) as well as in Theater Tri-buhne (Stuttgart). In recent years, his performances were nominated as the best theatrical works in Hungary. For the first time Bagossy directs a world famous classical play by his fellow-countryman, playwright Ferenc Molnár. Peter Fleischmann made a film version of the play in 1968, making Sperr famous on international level. Premiered in Vilnius – May 19th 2012 Euripides (c. 480 – 406 BC) was one of the three great tragedians of classical Athens who enriched form of drama with a mesmerizing simplicity. Contrarily to his coevals Aeschylus and Sophocles, Euripides always tried to make the plots of widely known myths more realistic, to actualize the tragedy to the times he himself lived through and to reveal passions and emotions of the characters. Only 17 of overall 90 tragedies created by Euripides survived to this day. “The Bacchae” (c. 405 BC) is a philosophical drama. Can mortals apprehend Gods with their sharp minds or only with a mystical foreboding? Whether Gods are allowed to reveal their wrath and vengeance on humans or should they be kind and forgiving? Euripides based his tragedy on a Greek myth of Cult of Dionysus, spreading at the time in the ancient city of Thebes. King Pentheus refuses to worship Dionysus and wants to fathom the creed rationally. In gloomy words of Dionysus Euripides states that there is no rational explanation to belief. Bacchae are identified as creatures of nature, an inseparable part of it. The choir of bacchae embodies the idea of blessing given by a naïve belief. Director Gintaras Varnas notes that Euripides was posthumously accused of disrupting the great golden age of the Greeks with his heretical “The Bacchae”. “Isn’t it the greatest compliment to theatre and the play itself? “The Bacchae” is a tragedy of the end of decadence and of a civilization that evolves just like a comedy. It’s the true modernism of the antiquity”, G. Varnas states. The play is based on a confrontation between two brothers – Juozas, a devoted nationalist-skinhead and Jonas, a homosexual computer geek. The title of the play invokes a particular ritual of the skin-head philosophy – a right to wear red shoelaces when one sheds blood for the first time. Will the biblical story of Cain and Abel be reenacted on-stage?
