I’m alive today because my UW Medicine physician didn’t give up on me. Even after a complex, 15-hour surgery, he was still by my side in the ICU. So he was there when I flatlined as my panicked wife pleaded with me to stay strong, and he, straddling me, reached into my chest and pumped my heart with his hand. He was only a phone call away weeks later when I had a near-fatal allergic reaction, and again for my subsequent stroke. And he found me the support I needed when I told him I was signing up for the Ironman. So how could I give up when, in my first race, my pedal broke with 30 miles left to ride? My experiences in Africa are mostly connected to the work that Seattle Theatre Group does as a member of the Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium – a group of arts organizations across the country aligned by our common mission to connect Africa and the U.S. through arts and culture. It is through participation in this organization that STG presents African artists such as South African dancer/choreographer Gregory Maqoma, presented this past fall in partnership with On the Boards. I have never been to the Serengeti, the backdrop for THE LION KING story, but a few years ago members from the Consortium traveled together to Nairobi, Kenya for a 3-day meeting with artists. In our efforts to connect the two continents, it is imperative for us to make some of those connections on the African continent. At the end of our scheduled meetings in Nairobi, we ventured out to experience the culture, life and landscape of this part of Northern Africa. What resulted was one of the most memorable moments of my entire life. One of our colleagues contacted a friend whose son and wife resided outside of Nairobi, in an area familiar to many from its depiction in the film Out of Africa. As we rounded an area of the road on our way to Karen, named for the subject of the film, Karen Blixen, it was as if we had driven right into the movie screen approaching what was once known as Maasailand. The Great Rift Valley is a 6,000-mile ridge expanse that runs through Kenya and Tanzania and parts of the Serengeti. There is simply nothing more beautiful than this piece of seemingly unspoiled land where some of the world’s most amazing animals roam. Dan Paulus Art Director For years, I have collected images of the beautiful Maasai people. I was stunned to look down the ridge and see a group of Maasai walking nobly with their cattle. Just as in the images I had collected, they wore bright red wraps, donned tightly coiled hair locks, wore leather sandals, amazing beads around their heads and necks, and carried sticks to aide them in guiding their herd. As is depicted in Disney’s THE LION KING, Africa is filled with intriguing ecosystems of relationships and survival. The interrelationships between people, animals, and geography are complex. Each time I see Disney’s THE LION KING, I am transported back to that Sunday afternoon I stood above the Great Rift Valley and watched the Maasai approach. I channel Mufasa. By continuing to grow our relationship with Africa, STG is in some ways symbolic of Simba. Incorporating the art and life of Africa into our programming, we are sustaining vital elements of the circle of life. With each visit to this great continent, and with every story that comes from Africa, we hope to be touched by some message that piques our curiosity. This production sparks my interest in learning more about the complicated relationships in the African animal kingdom. Mr. Fagan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and for more than 33 years has toured the world with Garth Fagan Dance. On television the company has appeared on “Great Performances,” “The Tonight Show” and the Academy Awards.® Mr. Fagan forged his own dance language and technique, drawing from modern dance, Afro-Caribbean and ballet, and has choreographed for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Jose Limon Company, the New York City Ballet’s 50th Anniversary, and others. In addition, he choreographed Joseph Papp’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Duke Ellington street opera, Queenie Pie at the Kennedy Center. A distinguished university professor at SUNY Brockport, he has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the 2001 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award, a Bessie Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright 50th Anniversary Distinguished Fellow. He has also been inducted into the American Academy of Achievement. RICHARD HUDSON (Scenic Design) was born in Zimbabwe, and educated in Zimbabwe and England.In 1988 he won a Laurence Olivier Award for designing a season of seven plays at the Old Vic Theatre, London. His set designs for The Lion King have won numerous awards including a Tony® in 1998. He is a Royal Designer for Industry LE (RDI). In 2003 he won the Gold Medal for Set Design at the Prague Quadriennale, and in 2005 he was given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Surrey. He has designed sets and costumes for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the Young Vic and the Gate, London. In opera he has worked at the Royal Opera, English National Opera, La Scala Milan, Metropolitan Opera New York, Opera National de Paris, Lyric Opera Chicago, Staatsoper Vienna, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and in Zurich, Munich, Amsterdam, Venice, Florence, Turin, Bregenz, Houston and Washington. Continuing our partnership with Seattle Repertory Theatre, STG presents an adaptation of South African writer Can Themba’s story The Suit, directed by the legendary Peter Brook (The Tragedy of Hamlet, 2001). The play brings to the stage a charming and disquieting parable about forgiveness set in apartheid South Africa. Combining a rich musical score with a remarkably simple staging, The Suit follows a cuckolded husband who doles out an unusual punishment to his wife: he asks that she treat her lover’s abandoned suit as a guest of honor in their home. Writer Can Themba is considered one of South Africa’s most distinguished writers. Having won many awards, he has placed himself among a group of South African writers dedicated to chronicling the anguish, triumphs, disillusionment and passionate hopes of the struggling masses. Themba wrote most of his work in Sophiatown, where The Suit is set, before it was destroyed under the provisions of the apartheid Group Areas Act. In his young career, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already redefined an under-theradar instrument, and has been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, won accolades from the likes of Eddie Vedder and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, wowed audiences on TV (Jimmy Kimmel, Conan), earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and even played in front of the Queen of England. With his new record Grand Ukulele, Shimabukuro’s star may burn even brighter. His music incorporates elements of jazz, blues, funk, bluegrass, classical, folk and flamenco. He’s even experimented with effects pedals and digital processors as a means to expand the instrument’s sound.
