Synopsis
London, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan… Around The World In 80 Days is a globetrotting
adventure set in record time! Based on Jules Verne’s popular 1873 novel, this is the hilarious
story of Phileas Fogg’s whistle-stop journey to satisfy a wager and circumnavigate the world in
eighty days. But with bandits, a damsel in distress, and transportation problems around every
corner, will he be able to make the deadline? Danger, romance, and comic surprises abound as
five actors cleverly take on thirty-nine different characters from around the world for a one-of-akind stage experience.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS
If you need to be reached during a
performance, please leave your exact seat
number and the House Manager’s number with
your service or sitter.
In Issaquah (425) 392-1942 x100
In Everett (425) 257-6368
BABES IN ARMS Please, no babes in arms
in the Theatre. In Issaquah, the Francis J.
Gaudette Theatre has comfortable, sound-proof
family rooms for families bringing children
under four. Subscribers may exchange into the
family rooms when a sitter cannot be found.
When children are old enough to join the main
floor audience, please instruct them in proper
theatre behavior. It is helpful to familiarize them
with the story and the score in advance.
ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating is
available. Please advise your ticket seller
when purchasing tickets if you require
wheelchair seating. American Sign Language
(ASL) interpretation is provided during select
performances at the Francis J. Gaudette theatre.
Please contact the Box Office for more details.
LISTENING SYSTEM The Theatre is equipped
with a listening system for the hard of hearing.
Headsets are available on a first-come firstserved basis from the House Manager, and are
free of charge with a valid ID.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON Whether it rains,
sleets, snows or blows, only a power outage or
building destruction will prevent a performance
from taking place as scheduled.
PATRON CONSIDERATIONS Please arrive on
time. Check your tickets for your performance
time. Late arrivals are very disruptive to fellow
patrons and to the artists onstage. Please give
yourself plenty of time to get to the Theatre.
Patrons arriving late will not be seated until
a suitable pause in the performance at the
House Manager’s discretion.
Please turn off all pagers, cellular phones
and watch alarms before entering the Theatre.
No text messaging is allowed during the
performance.
No photography, video or sound recording
of any performance is allowed based on royalty
and union agreements.
Be aware that talking, humming and tapping
feet during a performance is also disruptive to
the patrons around you. Before the overture
begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and
unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums
like the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the
Everett Performing Arts Center, even the actors
can hear these seemingly small noises. Please
use moderation in applying perfume, cologne or
lotion, as many people are allergic to scents.
In consideration of your fellow patrons and
the actors, please do not leave the performance
during the curtain call.

Directors’ Notes
“Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real,” wrote Jules Verne
in his enduringly popular novel Around the World in 80 Days. That bold assertion
could almost be the motto of those of us who work in the theatre. What a
delicious and mind-expanding challenge Verne’s tale of adventure, speed,
heroism, suspense, and love sets for the artists who attempt to contain its
dozens of exploits on a stage.
Written almost 150 years ago, the first installment was published on December
21, 1872, the very day on which Phileas Fogg and Passepartout must complete
their circumnavigation of the globe. The quixotic adventures of Fogg and his
manservant take us through time zones and exotic landscapes with a headlong
insistence on excitement and adventure that has always gripped the popular
imagination. And while it originally reflected the most up-to-date travel technology,
it now charms us with its romantic view of the pleasures of taking one’s time.
The story has always been a favorite of adapters in many mediums. Verne himself
co-wrote a play almost immediately after the book was published. There have been
numerous movies, most famously the David Niven/Cantinflas epic in 1956. There
have been musicals, graphic novels, and TV serials. Led by the iconic foursome
of Fogg, Passepartout, Detective Fix, and Aouda, along with its Dickensian range
of flamboyant supporting characters, it has always drawn artists tantalized by
the challenge of containing a whole world in a single work of art.
That is the delightful challenge that has animated all of us at Village Theatre
over these past months as we tackled this story. We started with Mark Brown’s
delightful script that manages to distill nearly all of the events in the novel into
a quick-stepping adventure. We added the talents of some of Village’s most
imaginative designers and the skills of a production staff that can construct
elephants and snow-blown sleds with equal aplomb, and can transform an actor
from a bewigged British lawyer to a Brahmin priest in the blink of an eye.

Most crucially, we enlisted five of our favorite Village Theatre performers to
create a range of characters from dusty British fogies to crusty sea captains,
Indian princesses to French manservants. We have had an absolute ball in
rehearsals exploring the “what if”s and “how about”s of a tale of adventure.
It is our hope that your imagination will add the final ingredient to help us tell
Jules Verne’s classic adventure tale.
Like many classic tales, Around the World in 80 Days celebrates eternal verities:
the unstoppable power of team work, the importance of love to a complete life,
the value of taking a risk to achieve more than we ever thought possible. Now
if you will kindly lend us your imagination we have a whopper of a story to tell…

Who’s Who
STEVEN CONEY (Staff Electrician) A 2013
Southern Oregon University B.F.A. graduate,
this is Steven’s second season working as a key
electrician with Village Theatre. He’s worked
as a spot light operator for several of Village
Theatre’s shows including Xanadu, Funny
Girl, and In The Heights and looks forward to
more projects in the future. Thank you to all
of my friends and family who have supported
me since my move to Washington last year.
PATRICK SHERMAN (Carpenter) A
graduate of the University of Washington’s
School of Drama, Patrick is excited to be
continuing a career in technical theatre
full time in his eighth season as a Scenic
Carpenter with Village Theatre. He’d like to
thank Jesus, his family, and his friends and
coworkers, old and new.
JENNIFER BLAZEK (Scenic Artist)
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Jen
landed in Seattle via NYC, San Diego, and
Portland. This is her second season working
in the Paint Department and she even works
in the Props Department from time to time.
In her free time Jen enjoys hiking, camping,
biking, traveling, the amazing-ness of the
PNW, and spending time with her amazing
friends and family!
CREATINGART
One of Village Theatre’s most unique qualities
is that every one of our shows is custom
designed from the ground up. This Season we
are celebrating our team of master craftsmen
by taking a look behind the scenes at the
dedication and work put into each and every
show here at Village Theatre.
Our resident Props Master, Monique
Walker, is tasked with finding, inventing,
building, shopping, and acquiring all props
for our shows. “I think of it like moving to
a new house: we bring everything, except
your clothes!” She says. Monique has been
‘propping’ and doing theatre since 1984.
“When my high school Drama teacher
suggested I volunteer to strike [the set] at
the theatre because they fed us pizza, I was
hooked.” She describes. She went on to get her
B.A. in Theatre and her M.F.A. in Stage Design,
joining the Village Theatre team in 2012.
The Props Shop is located down the street
from the Francis J. Gaudette theatre in

VILLAGE THEATRE
RACHELE WIRRICK (Scenic Artist) is
proud to be working on her seventh season
as a part of Village Theatre’s scenic studio.
One of her favorite painting experiences was
working on Big River, designed by Scott Fyfe.
She would like to thank her parents David
and Deborah, and Tommy Price for their
continued encouragement and support.
CIERA IVESON (Associate Production
Manager) is thrilled to be here for her
fourth season at Village Theatre. Favorite
contributions to Mainstage productions
include pushing the raft in rehearsal for Big
River, learning the male choreography for
spacing in Fiddler on the Roof, and most
recently, her guest appearance as Clarice
in The Tutor. In her free time, Ciera enjoys
creating and producing original works with
The Town Theatre, including her new play,
Domesticity. Ciera has a B.F.A from Emerson
College. Much love to Nick and The Fam.
JAY MARKHAM (Production Manager)
has been the Production Manager since 2004.
Previously he was the Technical Director for
Village Theatre at the Everett Performing Arts
Center in 1998. With a background in stage
management, technical theatre, and even a
little acting, Jay approaches theatre with an
Issaquah at our Technical Studios. Within the
shop is a carpentry area for woodworking,
a fabric/crafts/paints area, and space for
Monique’s office/the shop’s meeting and break
room. All of the metal working for props
is done downstairs in Tech Studio’s main
shop. The building of the holiday musical is
generally the busiest time for the shop, that
busyness amplifying during the rehearsal
period when Directors and Choreographers
are bringing their staging and blocking
visions to life on stage. After the last show
of the Season opens, things calm down…
but only for a little bit! Summer brings our
KIDSTAGE productions which Monique and
her props team work on as well. “We really
are a year-round operating theatre and shop!”
Is there ever an average day for a Props
Master? “No such thing!” Monique laughs.
“Usually I meet with my staff, the lovely
and talented Justine Halsey-Martin and
Laurel Blaine, first thing in the morning. We
go through the rehearsal or performance
reports, divide up the notes for the day, then
do those first.” Following this is the Project
understanding and appreciation of making
truly great theatre work while also having
also spent some time in the world of
corporate events and concert production.
He is grateful to work with such a fantastic
team! Favorite projects include CATS, The
Who’s TOMMY, Les Misérables, Million
Dollar Quartet, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jesus
Christ Superstar, and Show Boat. Love to
Huckleberry, Ignatius, and Aimee.
ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION (AEA)
founded in 1913, represents more than 48,000
actors and stage managers in the United
States. Equity seeks to advance, promote, and
foster the art of live theatre as an essential
component of our society. Equity negotiates
wages and working conditions, providing a
wide range of benefits, including health and
pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFLCIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an internal
organization of performing arts unions. The
Equity emblem is our mark of excellence.

List where Monique works to get updates
on how each big project is going, and what
materials, space, or further research is still
needed. Monique also does all of the ‘artistic
shopping,’ which she describes as researching
and purchasing fabrics, furniture, and other
big-ticket items. “We create 50% of each
show from our own imagination and ideas.”
Monique explains. “We’ll get drawings for
specific things and research those, but we
frequently make major modifications in order
for pieces to function for the Director and
Actors. Being a props person takes a huge
range of skills and interests!”

A Globetrotting Adventure
Set In Record Time
By Carly Vester
FUN FACT: Jules Verne
scrupulously researched his novels,
which include some of the most
famous works of fiction to emerge
from the 19th Century: Journey To
The Center Of The Earth (1864),
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under
The Sea (1869), and Around The
World In 80 Days (1872).
B
orn and raised in the busy maritime
port city of Nantes, France, Around The
World In 80 Days author Jules Verne had
an imagination predisposed to journeys
around the world. He was highly influenced
by his favorite adventure tales from the
adults around him, including his boarding
school teacher’s husband, a naval captain who
was lost at sea, whom Jules was told might
someday return home Robinson Crusoestyle. His uncle, a retired ship-owner who had
traveled the world, spun tales of the fantastic
places he visited. And the woe of Jules’ own
lost loves, who were hastened into other
secure marriages, supposedly caused many
of Jules’ female characters to be married off
against their will.
It wasn’t until 1999 that award-winning
writer and actor Mark Brown had the idea to
adapt Jules Verne’s globetrotting adventure
into a stage play. The play opened in 2001
and has since been produced quite fittingly
all around the world—from New York to
Bangladesh, South Africa to the Himalayas.
The idea to adapt the book came from Mark’s
friend, who mentioned how fascinating it
would be to create a show that follows a hot
air balloon from country to country. Spoiler
alert: there is no balloon in this show. As
Mark put it in a recent Q&A with Laguna
Playhouse: “There’s no balloon in the book.
There’s no balloon in my script. It’s the
curse of the movie, really. It’s what everyone
remembers.”
Hot air balloon aside, where does the idea
of five actors playing thirty-nine characters
come into play? Well, Mark wanted to keep
the cast to five actors from the beginning.
“I thought that was a good number,” he
explained. “It’s hell trying to get something
produced with more than five actors.” Mark
also credits his experience as an actor to
helping him write this show. He knew what
was possible for quick changes, breaking
down the fourth wall, as well as breaking
down time and space throughout the show.
“I wanted this one to be fun for the audience,
and for the actors.” He said. “[Though]
sometimes I think actors want to kill me for
what I have done.”
Outside of the theatre adaptation, Jules
Verne’s popular novel has also been adapted
into other formats, including films and a
board game. Additionally, it has sparked
the creation of the Jules Verne Trophy,
awarded annually since 1993 to the boat
that sails non-stop around the world in the
shortest time without outside assistance.
Neither Jules Verne nor Mark Brown could
have predicted the success of their works,
and we are thrilled to be bringing the journey
of Phileas Fogg and the eccentric characters
of Around The World In 80 Days to life here
at Village Theatre.
FUN FACT: £20,000 GBP in 1872
(the wager amount Phileas Fogg
accepts) had the same purchasing
power as $1,950,000 USD today.

EVERETT’S ARTS EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Kati Nickerson
Village Theatre’s Director of Youth Education
and Community Outreach
Congratulations to our own
Kati Nickerson, Village Theatre’s
Director of Youth Education
and Outreach, who was awarded
The Mayor’s Award for Arts
Educator of the Year by the City
of Everett’s Cultural Commission
on November 19, 2014!
Now in her 17th year with Village Theatre,
Kati is more dedicated than ever to youth
development and arts education; and has
guided our programs in both Everett and
Issaquah, reaching thousands of young
people, families, and teachers throughout
the region annually. Under Kati’s capable
leadership, Village Theatre’s Youth Education
Programs build theatre skills, encourage
creativity, collaboration, problem solving,
concentration, public speaking, and a strong
work ethic.
How do you feel about receiving this award?
On behalf of Village Theatre, I feel deeply
honored and very surprised about receiving
this award!
How does this award honor Village
Theatre’s programs?
The award honors Village Theatre Youth
Education programs by shining a light on the
work that has been done over the years by
some very dedicated staff and students.
What parts of your job bring you joy?
I have a dream job. I pinch myself every day.
Everything is joyous: from the most tedious
administrative task, to fine-tuning a new
program, to leading a workshop with our
inspiring teaching artists. Everything leads to
transformation. I hold back tears in almost
every class or rehearsal as I watch students
stretch themselves, take risks, and support
each other. The programs are life-changing
machines! Children come out the other side
stronger, more emotionally intelligent, and
with the confidence and skills to thrive in the
21st Century.
What makes the programs special and why
are they important to our communities?
Our afterschool program KIDSTAGE offers
an environment intentionally created to foster
youth development. Both the physical and
emotional environments are safe, welcoming,
and stimulate growth and learning. Imagine
being a young person interested in theatre
who first walks through the doors at Second
Stage. If it was me at 15, I would think,
“What?! This theatre has 170 seats and
is just for kids? There’s a technical booth
that runs sound and lights, and I can learn
about and do that?! The rehearsal spaces,
classrooms, greenroom, and dressing rooms
are the same kind of spaces professionals
use? The teachers, directors, and designers
are actual professionals? No way!” That
Everett is a place where such a venue exists
is extraordinary. Arts education has been
proven to help reduce the achievement gap
between high and low income students.
So Village Theatre provides programs in
school as well. Students can see theatre at
our venue or enjoy arts learning in their
classroom with a professional teaching artist.
All of our programs are available regardless
of the ability to pay. In my 17 years, I have
seen Village Theatre’s youth programs in
Snohomish County grow to impacting over
30,000 people in the community each year.
What a thrilling journey it has been!

ROBB HUNT (Executive
Producer) helped

Theatre programming. He has collaborated
on the creation of productions such as

an active member of the National Alliance
for Musical Theatre and Robb has served
on its New Works committee and on the
Board of Directors. He has also served as a
peer panelist and evaluator for the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

his active professional
arts career in Seattle
in 1972, as a member
of The Empty Space’s
acting company. He has
been the artistic director
at Village Theatre for the past 20 years.
Prior to his time here, he was the artistic
director at Civic Light Opera for several years.
As a director and choreographer, Steve’s
regional work has been seen at The Arkansas
Repertory Theatre, The Arizona Theatre
Company, Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT,

Thompson Productions. He has directed

the mission of The Press since we opened our doors in 1900. The
Press currently enjoys partnerships with several community organizations that enrich the lives of
citizens. We are proud to support local arts, artists and a local institution through our relationship
with Village Theatre. The Press shares Village Theatre’s mission to improve the quality of life for

Everett Bone & Joint has been helping the residents of Snohomish County with their
orthopedic needs since 1987. Today they are the largest independent orthopedic
group in Snohomish County, specializing in the treatment of bones, joints, spine,
nerves, and muscles. The diverse and extensive training of their board certified
doctors means they can offer expertise in more areas of orthopedic care. Everett
Bone & Joint is a Proliance Care Center and includes doctors Ralph Haller, Jeff Mason, Peter
Kinahan, Howard Barker, Todd Havener, Bill Huang, John Pryor, Doug Nowak, and Ken Lin.
The Daily Herald is proud to partner
with Village Theatre, whose productions are
one of the gems of the Snohomish County
thriving arts community, bringing joy to
young and old alike. Supporting local arts
has always been part of our mission at The
Herald. We consider it a privilege to connect
our readers with the performances, exhibits,
festivals, films and books that will excite,
educate, and inspire them. As The Herald
enters its 114th year, this is just one of
the ways we strive to enrich our community
through quality, award-winning journalism.
As a long time supporter of the arts, Everett Bone & Joint shares a commitment with Village
Theatre to provide new and notable arts and entertainment to the people of greater Snohomish
County. They believe our local community should receive the best in services and entertainment
without the headaches of travel and traffic, and are honored to support the artists and professionals who make this happen.

Village Theatre gratefully acknowledges the following corporations, foundations, and government agencies that contributed to our annual fund between
