Short Synopsis: An unforgettable experience of African
music, dance and culture fused with the contemporary
influences of Australia. Directed by Appiah Annan
(Sidney Myer Creative Fellow) and joined by
international guest artists from Ghana, West Africa.
Sankofa draws on the ancient Adrinkra symbol from
Ghanaian traditional beliefs that teaches before one
can move forward one must look back to the past.
Asanti Dance Theatre are internationally recognised as
leaders in traditional music and dance, acrobatics and
Afro-contemporary dance choreography and
performance.
First presented at the prestigious Malthouse Theatre
(Melbourne, Australia) in December 2012 to standing
ovations, Sankofa was the company’s debut work in
this genre. Having follow on seasons at the Drum
Theatre and Footscray Community Arts Centre Sankofa
has continued to impress audiences in and around the
city and regional areas in Australia.

Directed by Appiah Annan (Sidney Myer Creative
Fellowship recipient, and one of Australia’s leading
African drum and dance practitioners), this highly
energetic drum and dance ensemble present an
unforgettable experience of African music, dance and
culture fused with the contemporary influences of
Australia.
They are internationally recognised as leaders in
traditional, modern and Afro-contemporary dance
choreography and performance.

Marketing Selling Points:
We often find pop up performances and pre show
busking is highly effective. International guest artists
from Ghana, West Africa is also a big draw card. Asanti
are the only company in Australia exploring this genre.
Asanti have worked extensively throughout regional
Victoria with schools and councils, performing at
festivals and events and teaching workshops.
They are known for their ability to engage the
community, creating a safe and supportive
environment for people to participate.
Sankofa presents an inspiring new genre of work to
Victorian audiences.
Show can be adapted to suit a range of different
venues including theatres, outdoor stages and town
halls

POST SHOW 'JAM'
On conclusion of the show we often run a short
interactive session getting the audiences to do simple
dance movements, clapping and call and response
singing. It’s a great way to involve the audience and
break the 4th wall.

DRUM WORKSHOPS
These can be implemented in a formal workshop
environment or in a communal area (town square,
shopping centre etc). We provide drums for
participants.

DANCE WORKSHOPS
Dance workshops can be facilitated in African dance,
Afro-Funk, Gumboot Dancing (Body percussion), Afrocontemporary or BoomSa (our new Afro- aerobics
program).

Theatre Formats:
The work has been presented in black box theatres and
proscenium arch theatres to date. Please note however
that the show is versatile and simply requires enough
space for the dancers to dance. Our dancers are used
to dancing on a variety of different surfaces and in a
variety of different settings.

When can you perform after bump-in? The next day is
the preferred set up however the show can be bumped
in the day of performance.

In-Brief Staging and Set Description
Stage consists of a variety of drums and instruments
upstage. Large canvas print hung from the upstage fly.
It is essential that a space no smaller then 6x6 metres
is left clear for the dancers. A large woven wooden
‘nest’ is set centre stage at the opening of the show
and either attached to a fly system or removed by the
dancers (depending on bump in time and venue
capabilities).

energy and big thinking mail delivery game, capturing
the thoughts of children and delivering them to adult
passersby.

Company History and Background:
Performance 4a is the leading producer of
contemporary Asian Australian performance. At the
heart of all its acclaimed multi-artform works is great
storytelling. Its most recent production, Yasukichi
Murakami – Through a Distant Lens, sold out its
seasons at Darwin Festival 2014, and Griffin Theatre
Company Sydney (2015). The Serpent’s Table was the
hit of Sydney Festival 2014. Stories Then & Now
(2013) played to capacity audiences at Carriageworks
Sydney and OzAsia Festival Adelaide.

you’d made?
Short Synopsis: Harry Crawford seems an ordinary,
decent bloke to the neighbours. He and wife Annie are
bringing up a boy and they all seem happy enough…
until a strange girl comes knocking. Then the trouble
begins. But how does it end in murder? And the
revelation of something even more shocking?
The Trouble with Harry written by Lachlan Philpott rips
back the curtains on the true case of Eugenia Falleni,
aka Harry Crawford, the notorious ‘Man-Woman’
murderer of 1920s Sydney. Challenging the notion of
the innocent woman duped, this new large-scale
production examines concepts of perversion and
complicity, of secret lives and secret deaths.

Founded in 2010, MKA: Theatre of New Writing is
Australia's premiere international new writing theatre
company. A champion for new performance writers, the
company opens its doors not just to playwrights and
poets, but designers, choreographers, composers,
installation artists and actors. The more urgent, bold or
challenging the script, the better. MKA has since
staged 20 unique multi-award winning productions and
tens of thousands of punters have seen our work as it's

Part who-done-it part history play this is a story of
humanity, gossip and sexual identity. It’s true-crime
nature is expertly blended into a theatrical and
dramatic experience. Hooks in particular are the
existing historical interest, books and articles about
Eugenia, true photos from the Police Museum (very
intriguing) and the plays high calibre, award-winning
writer behind hits like Silent Disco

The key audience for TTWH is curious, historically
interested and open. This is a beautiful, intriguing story
that appeals to a broad range of theatre goers and
new-comers alike beyond a specific LGBT crowd.

MKA has prepared cast-led workshops on gender
identity and history which can be tailored to various
demographics. MKA has an established New Writing
workshop engaging local audiences & artists in our
processes and equips them for their own playwriting.

Short Synopsis: Death By Soprano satirically catalogues
operatic death scenes in an A-Z, cabaret romp through
Operatic Occupational Hazards.
Death By Soprano is a cabaret work and accompanying
photographic exhibition. The project is created with a great
love of opera, although it also embraces a loving
irreverence for her occasionally over-inflated ego.
Utilising slapstick, absurdism, dark-clowning and a healthy
dose of prop-humour, Death By Soprano portrays the final
moments in the lives of operatic heroines.
The show is created specifically for 'non-opera'
demographics, particularly comedy, cabaret and festival
audiences but also caters for lovers of classical music.

Short Synopsis: Aussie Aussie Aussie is a tongue-in cheek
political satire concerning different ideas of the evolving
Australian identity. Told from the perspective of a 5th
generation Australian, an American expat and an Iranian
applying for citizinship. The show features awe inspiring
acrobatics, beer can juggling, aerial keg, 3 meter high
handstands and (of course) standing on heads.
The work is highly inspired from our previous RAV tour and

new Australians.

Dave Arden is a Kokatha/Gunditjmara Storyteller &
Songman. Dave comes from the Kokatha peoples of
the West Coast, South Australia. & The Gunditjmara
peoples in South Western, Victoria. His poetic songs
are inspired by a deep passion of love for country,
Dave’s upbringing and his family with whom he shares
a special, spiritual & cultural connection.

Tagline: A kooky off the wall story, set in a wondrous and
unpredictable tinkering heaven
Short Synopsis: Loose Ends is a touring family show,
combining custom-built contraptions, puppetry, circus,
shadow projection, music and transformed objects to a
visual theatre extravaganza.
It is a story about friendship, fake values, loss and
perseverance, settled in a whimsical world of halfmechanised thingamabobs and headstrong puppets.
Built from hard rubbish or op-shop treasures, the set is a
celebration of the capricious: household items are
transformed and given new uses and contexts, thus
offering a humorous and surprising new look at things.
Cute puppets get heart-broken and turn into naughty
baddies, a model train creates magic moving shadows,
Elmo loses his fur and wacky contraptions appear: off-beat
rules!
The show will have an educational post-show component,
as well as offering the opportunity to be combined with
different workshops prior to or after the performance.
It can travel with its own technical equipment and can be
performed in all kind of (also remote) venues.

Jens Altheimer, who relocated from Europe to Melbourne in
2009, is a performer, director and teacher in theatre and
circus, trained at the Lecoq International School of Theatre
in Paris.
Zealous frontman of his one-man shows, quirkologist,
established collector, inventor and transformer of
thingamabobs and other wondrous oddities of day to day
life.
Jens Altheimer is currently touring his prior production
“Squaring the Wheel” nationally and internationally. By the
end of 2015, the show will have had approx 260
performances. It was the 2013 winner of “Best
Presentation for Children” at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

funny comedy. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, there is

Gravity Dolls is a collaboration between Tim Rutty and
Tarah Carey. The pair was first introduced in 2012
when a mutual work and study place brought them
together. After developing respect and appreciation for
each other’s work, the pair investigated the possibility
of collaborating to blend their passions for theatre and
circus. This passion sparked a vision to create stories
that encompass the entire performance space,
challenging the laws of gravity and invoking a sense of

on secrets and half-truths, how does she know who she is?

multiple regional tours with Ireland, Celtic Whispers,
Vienna, City of my Dreams, Spirit of Celt etc. She has
always been regional tour specific, and has chosen this
show because "it is so beautiful I felt I had a vocation
to tour it". She is respected for her ability to get shows

Bunk Puppets creates a unique shadow puppet

Short Description:
Town Folk tears up the Town Planners blueprints and
gets under the foundations to find out ‘who’ are the
bricks and mortar that make up your town. Comedian
Damian Callinan comes to town with film-maker John
Cherry to capture local identities on camera, work the
brave ones into the show and create a moving tapestry
from the human fabric of your community.
Picture - Gary from the grain silo changing jobs with
Gwen for the Tourist Info Centre; local Prep kids
discussing what they would change of they were the
Mayor; the amateur drama group making an advert for
the town or 87year old Nancy talking through all the
events she’s been to at the Town Hall.
With film and stills combined with live segments and
audience interaction the show will create more town
pride than a Category 2 Tidy Town Award.

Tagline: A comedic exposé of Australia’s most
controversial clothing item.
Short Synopsis: Tracksuit. Trackie. Trackie Dacks.
Part homage, part trackiepedia, the show follows the
tracksuit through time from Olympic glory to Saturday
afternoon lawn mowing, gangster symbol and ‘I
wouldn’t be seen wearing one outside the house’. It
asks: ‘Can we celebrate our most comfy daks’, ‘Who
loves trackies, who hates them and why?’
‘Tracksuit’ is currently in the later stages of
development. It will undergo further development in
mid-2015 and will be tour ready by the end of 2015.

Company History and Background:
Rachel Leary is an independent theatre maker,
character comedian, performer and writer. Her solo
show 'Everything Must Go' premiered at La Mama
Theatre in 2011. In April 2013 the show toured to thirty
regional Victorian venues. In April/May 2015 it will
tour for 7 weeks in Victoria and in QLD. Her new work,
‘Tracksuit’ was presented as part of La Mama’s
Explorations program in October 2014.
As a theatre maker Rachel has an interest in objects
that have been, and are, a part of our everyday lives
and our relationship to these things. Her work seeks to
find the remarkable in the apparently unremarkable, to
celebrate and to give voice to that which is considered
‘ordinary’.
Her writing has appeared in publications such as:
Island, Southerly and Forty Degrees South Short Story
Anthology. She has won awards in several literary
competitions and was commended in The Age Short
Story Competition 2011. In 2014 she received an
Australian Society of Authors Mentorship.

Short Synopsis: Based on real life encounters with
strangers on a Melbourne street, Intimacy gives a
powerful and complex view of how simple interactions
can generate immense depth of human insight. How
much of ourselves are we prepared to show? Why is it
sometimes easier to be honest with a total stranger
than with someone we know? Is this really honesty or
just another performance? Through a series of intimate
and diverse conversations, Intimacy gives a candid and
sometimes disquieting portrait of contemporary life

Community engagement activities:
The company has completed several workshop
developments with young people in regional Victoria in
Castlemaine in 2013 and 2014 and with further
workshops in Bendigo and Heathcote in 2015. We
have also made shows with non-professional
performers where they make a performance in their
own home for family friends and then travel to their
neighbours to see their performance. We would also
like to explore the option of combining the production
of Intimacy with workshops and community
performances like the above in order to deliver a longer
Ranters residency style as part of any tour.

Technical Brief:
The show is very simple to tour technically. We can
work with the existing set up. The presenter needs to
supply three chairs and a screen for the live portrait
projections used in the show. The fees quoted are
based on working with a venues existing equipment.
The show can Bump in and play that evening but we
would prefer two days if possible to do a detailed
rehearsal and get to know each location and assist in
marketing. The show is best served by being performed
in an intimate space.
