PRESS EMBARGO: Sunday 28 April 2013 21:30 BST OLIVIER AWARDS WITH MASTERCARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME WINS AN IMPRESSIVE SEVEN AWARDS INCLUDING BEST ACTOR FOR LUKE TREADAWAY AND MASTERCARD BEST NEW PLAY, EQUALLING MATILDA THE MUSICAL’S 2012 RECORD WIN THE AUDIENCE’S HELEN MIRREN CROWNED BEST ACTRESS AND RICHARD MCCABE AWARDED BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR MICHAEL BALL AND IMELDA STAUNTON WIN BEST ACTOR AND ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL FOR THEIR ROLES IN BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL SWEENEY TODD TOP HAT WINS THREE AWARDS INCLUDING BEST NEW MUSICAL BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL WINS BBC RADIO 2 AUDIENCE AWARD VOTED BY THE PUBLIC CO-HOST AND TWO-TIME OLIVIER AWARD WINNER SHERIDAN SMITH OPENED THE CEREMONY WITH A DAZZLING PERFORMANCE OF DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND OTHER SPECIAL PERFORMANCES INCLUDED INTERNATIONAL STARS MATTHEW MORRISON, IDINA MENZEL AND PETULA CLARK, AS WELL AS MICHAEL BALL, TIM MINCHIN AND A SPECIAL CATS TRIBUTE TO GILLIAN LYNNE The winners of the most prestigious event in the UK theatrical calendar, the 37th Olivier Awards with MasterCard, were announced tonight (28 April 2013) at a glamorous ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House in front of a packed audience of illustrious guests including award presenters Kim Cattrall, Tom Hiddleston, Damian Lewis, Lara Pulver and Daniel Radcliffe. Two-time Olivier Award winner Sheridan Smith, hosted the Awards with Hugh Bonneville, and opened the show with a dazzling performance of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend choreographed by Arlene Phillips. There were also exclusive performances from international musical theatre stars Matthew Morrison, Idina Menzel and Petula Clark, and unique entertainment from Tim Minchin, Michael Ball, and a Cats musical tribute to Special Award winner Gillian Lynne. The BBC Concert Orchestra was conducted by David Charles Abell, with original music by Larry Blank, and orchestrations by Larry Blank and Mark Cumberland. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, an adaption of Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel by Simon Stephens at the National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre and the Apollo Theatre, was the evening’s biggest winner taking home seven awards, equalling Matilda the Musical’s record win in 2012. As well as MasterCard Best New Play, the play’s winners included Luke Treadaway for Best Actor, Nicola Walker for Best Supporting Actress, Marianne Elliott for Best Director, Paule Constable for the White Light Award for Lighting Design, Bunny Christie and Finn Ross for the XL Video Award for Best Set Design and Ian Dickinson and Adrian Sutton for Best Sound Design. Helen Mirren was crowned Best Actress for her portrayal of The Queen in Peter Morgan’s drama The Audience at the Gielgud Theatre, with Richard McCabe winning Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre was presented to The Season of New Writing at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court. Other wins for drama included Best Revival for A Long Day’s Journey Into Night at the Apollo Theatre and Best Entertainment and Family for Goodnight Mr Tom at the Phoenix Theatre. In musical theatre, Best Musical Revival Sweeney Todd’s co-stars and 2011 and 2012 Olivier Awards hosts Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton celebrated Best Actor and Actress in a Musical wins for their roles at the Adelphi Theatre. Also winning three awards and bringing the glamour of the golden age of Hollywood to the West End, Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre won Best New Musical, as well as Autograph Sound Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for Bill Deamer, and Best Costume Design for Jon Morrell. American actress Leigh Zimmerman, performing in A Chorus Line at the London Palladium, collected the award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. The publicly voted BBC Radio 2 Audience Award was presented to Billy Elliot The Musical at the Victoria Palace theatre, a musical which has been shortlisted in the category for the last three years and now scoops the award. Best New Dance Production was won by the Royal Ballet for Aeternum at the Royal Opera House, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon with Outstanding Achievement in Dance presented to Argentinian principal dancer Marianela Nunez for Aeternum, Diana and Actaeon and Viscera, also at the Royal Opera House. Best New Opera Production was presented to Einstein on the Beach, by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass with choreography by Lucinda Childs at the Barbican Theatre, a five-hour production which invited audiences to enter and exit at their leisure. American tenor Bryan Hymel won Outstanding Achievement in Opera for his performances in Les Troyens, Robert Le Diable and Rusalka at the Royal Opera House. This year’s Special Award winners were choreographer and director Gillian Lynne, and playwright Michael Frayn, whose respective shows Cats and Noises Off are currently touring nationally. The evening’s show also included a live link to a free public Olivier Awards celebration on the BBC Radio 2 stage in Covent Garden Piazza where hundreds of theatre-lovers enjoyed West End performances and a live big screen relay of the ceremony. The Covent Garden event was hosted by Radio 2 presenter Claudia Winkleman and West End leading man Michael Xavier. The Awards were broadcast live to the public on BBC Radio 2, with extensive highlights broadcast shortly afterwards on ITV television from 10.15-11.50pm and then available on ITV Player.
