Healing Arts
Ancillary Benefits
of Meditation
by Guy Odishaw
Hima means snow–pure, untainted and extremely
cool; it symbolizes a perfect peace. Achala means
that which is steady and unshakeable. Himaachala
represents that which is cool, peaceful and steady. In
other words your True Nature, your Self, the Divine.
Hima is a willingness, a commitment, in any moment,
in every moment–to turn toward the Truth. Toward
the deepest truth you know.
For example, you might be angry with your partner
or your child and feel the impulse to act/speak from
anger. In that moment, Hima would be turning
toward a truth which is deeper than your anger,
toward the love you have for them. Giving that love
your attention and letting it inform your next words.
In meditation practice, Hima might be put to use
when you hear your self thinking of reasons why you
do not have time to practice today. In that moment,
you turn your attention away from those thoughts
toward the deeper truth of your practice.
Hima is the act of turning; practicing Hima is the
cultivation of will. Ultimately Hima is used to turn
our attention away from the external world toward
our inner world. Then, away from our inner world
toward our True Nature.
But we can also use it to turn away from the cookies
and toward the carrots.

EVERYMAN is believed to be based upon a 1495 Dutch

Carthusian monk. “Although the author is unknown, the play’s
content, themes, and ideology reflect those of Catholic Europe.
The play’s emphasis on good deeds as a mechanism for salvation
reflects medieval Catholic ideology.” encyclopedia.com

From writer, Jeremiah Gamble:
“It’s an intimidating task, as a writer,
to put Jesus onstage. But it’s also
equally intriguing. I decided I wanted
to take a close-up look at the “passion”
story–focusing on the relationships,
struggles and inner motivations of the
characters…Tragically, the passion
story has even been used to vilify Jews,
to oppress, divide and demean. I believe
the passion story is one of sacrifice, redemption, and restoration.
And we’ve seen that this story told well and with that spirit of
redemption meets people where they’re at: artists, audience
members, volunteers, Christians, agnostics, atheists. It engages
people, moves them, and challenges them.”

Minnesota Artist’s Gift to
His Granddaughter is Also
A Gift to Fans of His Work By Rachel M. Anderson, Contributing Writer
(Bemidji)–Like most artists,
Marley Kaul of Bemidji,
spends a lot of time in his
studio. However, drawing and
painting isn’t all he does there.
In the letters, Kaul shares his artistic process and the influences
reflected in his work. He also writes about growing up in the
southern Minnesota farming community of Good Thunder, of
where he gets ideas for his paintings, and of the many birds and
animals that frequent his yard.
“I do a lot of reading, listening
to music, and thinking, and
sometimes the thinking
connects with the deep past
and sometimes with the
present,” said the former
Bemidji State University
(BSU) art professor.
Isabella is now almost 12 years old, and many of the letters her
grandfather wrote to her over the years have been turned into
a lasting treasure not only for her to enjoy, but for fans of her
grandfather’s work as well.
About 12 years ago while
dealing with a health scare,
Kaul started writing letters
to his unborn granddaughter,
Isabella. He says around
that time he began to think
about his own mortality,
and wanted to make sure his
granddaughter would know
about him and his work if he
wasn’t around to share that
knowledge with her.

Did You Know?
Although considered to be Shakespeare’s weakest play,
Two Gentlemen of Verona has been adapted in various countries
throughout the world for operas, musicals, songs, films and
television? Here are just a few examples:
• Two Gentlemen of Verona was adapted for an opera in
1821 with lyrics by Frederic Reynolds and music by
Henry Bishop.
• A song based on Proteus’ serenade to Silvia was written
by German composer Franz Schubert. (Known as “Who is
Silvia?” in English and “An Sylvia” in German.)
• A 1931 silent film from China entitled Yi jiǎn méi (A Spray
of Plum Blossoms), written by Huang Yicuo, is loosely
based on Two Gentlemen of Verona.
• John Neville starred in the first television adaptation of
Act I of this play–broadcast by BBC in 1952.
• In 1971, the play was adapted for a rock musical by
Galt Macdermot, John Guare and Mel Shapiro which
opened in New York at the St. James Theatre and won two
Tony awards.
• In the popular television show Dawson’s Creek, the
competition between two best friends for the same woman
takes place during season three in 2000. Not only is one
of the episodes entitled “Two Gentlemen of Capeside”
and loosely based on the play, the play is also referenced
in an earlier episode during the friends’ high school

Noël Coward–Pithy, Poetic and Patriotic
They say Noël Coward started the turtleneck fad. And that
he made being British “Cool.” Born in Teddington, England
in 1899, Noël Peirce Coward attended a dance academy as
a child and worked as a child actor by the age of 11. He also
played piano by ear. During his lifetime, Coward achieved
success as an actor, singer, playwright, director, and
composer. His works often dealt with controversial subjects
such as homosexuality, but he was also known for his wit,
sophistication and patriotism.
During World War II, Coward contributed to the war effort
by running the British propaganda office in Paris. He also
traveled to the United States to determine what the American
public thought about the war and to convince the American
government to assist with the British war effort. He then
worked as an entertainer, performing for troops in Australia
and New Zealand. In the 1950s, he began a new career as a
cabaret singer
Coward published more than 50 plays, including Blithe
Spirit, Hay Fever and Private Lives, an operetta, Bitter Sweet, and
several screenplays, poems, short stories, and a novel. He
also composed hundreds of songs. He was knighted in 1969.
Coward died on March 26, 1973, in Jamaica. He was inducted
into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1988.

BLITHE SPIRIT
Set in the 1940s, this comedy is about a novelist and his
new wife who host a dinner party that includes a séance.
Unfortunately, the ghost of the author’s annoying first
wife shows up and decides not to leave. “Stylistically, it
is Coward’s masterpiece: his most complete success in
imposing his own view of things on the brute facts of
existence, “according to Irving Waddle of The Times.

punk, and pop, this exciting band was founded by Beijingbased rocker, Ilchi. With music and throat singing of
Mongolian musicians, this band incorporates traditional

Did you know…
Throat singing is one of the world’s oldest forms of
music? “This guttural style of singing, or chanting,
is achieved by artists who can produce two or more
simultaneous notes through specialized techniques that
take advantage of the throat’s resonance characteristics.
Through coordinated movements of the lips, tongue,
jaw, and larynx, throat singers use their bodies as an
instrument to produce unique and hypnotic harmonies.”

The Impact of Habitat for Humanity
Minnesota is full of successful doers with sharp minds and big
hearts. However, our region–defined by progress–is stymied
by growing inequalities, and too many people are left out of the
success story. If unchecked, this divide threatens the viability
of our community. Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity believes
affordable homeownership is one solution that gets right at root
causes of inequality. Twin Cities neighborhoods with good
schools, parks, jobs, and infrastructure share the common trait
of high homeownership rates.
You can support the mission of Twin Cities Habitat, and enjoy
a wonderful night out, at the annual Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala
on Saturday, April 9 at the St. Paul RiverCentre. Guests are
encouraged to wear construction couture to this party that is a
little less formal and a lot more fun. Get your tickets or a table at
www.tchabitat.org/gala.
Ya Landa bought a Habitat home that she helped rehab on
St. Paul’s East Side in 2010. After moving in, her asthma
cleared up because she was no longer living in a moldy
apartment. Today her oldest son, Taylor, is a student at the
Carlson School of Management and her younger son, Dale, will
start college this fall. She’s so proud of both of them. Stories
like Ya Landa’s are why people keep coming back to Habitat as
volunteers and financial donors. They see the impact of their
gifts and the impact of affordable homeownership.

Below: “Woman with No Name”
Steve Goad
Steve’s style consists of a wide range of realism, impressionism and a little bit of both.
Artist Steve Goad with his work.
In short, he paints what he likes and chooses colors
that move him. His subject matter is also wide ranging,
consisting of concept, whimsical, wildlife, fantasy and
science fiction. He works with acrylic, charcoal, oils,
digital and follows a simple rule: He makes traditional
paintings look like digital photos and his digital work like
traditional paintings. He often receives comments from
his fans about how they like his work because he doesn’t
stick to just one medium or one subject matter. From
dancers to whimsical characters to fantasy environments
and wildlife, they never know what kind of art he’ll be
creating next.
He believes art is more than just a piece of paper or
canvas; it is an extension of the artist himself. Steve
believes art comes from within, it doesn’t matter if
you’re using a pencil, paintbrush, airbrush or a digital
pen. It’s the end result that matters most. His goal is to
produce art worthy of being displayed in people’s homes,
a catalyst to inspire our youth, and to leave a legacy for
his family: www.stevegoadart.com.

American Artists
The American Artist Series
T
his issue continues another American Artists Series, now in
its fifth year. Each year, we search for art all over the United
States, looking for that special, unique “something” that only
talented, dedicated and inspired artists can provide. As always,
our goal is to bring our readers artists who excel in their work
and art that we believe our readers will truly appreciate.
We look for art that is visually beautiful, emotionally or
spiritually provocative and/or intellectually challenging.
Because we always have the reader in mind we also consider
the accessibility of the artists and the art. Therefore, we also
look for art that we believe the viewer will want to hang in
their home or their place of business, art that can be seen on a
website and artists that can be reached.
I have learned, after doing this for four years now, that we
are a country filled with talented artists and remarkable
art. Each artist has their own story and while their artistic
ability is impressive, they are not simply defined by their art.
I encourage you to visit their websites, enjoy their art and
read their bios and statements. Some of them have stories as
fascinating as their art. And by all means, treat yourself to a
great piece of art!

Burton Hanna
Alaska Artist of the Year
907.727.4597
[email protected]
www.burtsart.com
Burton Hanna has been creating art for as long
as he can remember. He was born in 1954 near
the Black Hills in South Dakota. His parents
moved to Alaska when he was 10 years old
and he has lived most of his life in Alaska.
He finds inspiration in the wild beauty of his
surroundings. He worked mainly with charcoal
and graphite. In 2002, he began oil painting
and he realized that oils were the medium that
would best express his artistic vision. One of
his greatest inspirations is Native American dance. His heritage is Norwegian
and Lakota and he has loved attending powwows since his childhood. In his
paintings, he works to capture the excitement, brilliance and action of the
powwow dancers.

Vicki P. Maguire
South Carolina Artist of the Year
[email protected]
www.vickipmaguire.com
Vicki, raised in Massachusetts and
New Mexico, now calls Charleston
home. She has always known she would
work in the arts. Her mother was
a master seamstress and artistically
gifted. This, in addition to the
influence of many travels, gave her a
deep appreciation for the beauty of
the vast land and its color variations–
especially the oceans. This love affair
has gone from Impressionistic work to
Contemporary Expressionism allowing
experiences in life to permeate her work in the studio. Vicki utilizes
oil, wax, scrapers and large brushes to gain luminosity in her work. A
B.A. in Advertising/Design, minor in Photography, her paintings are
collected nationwide and are hanging as far away as Granada, Nicaragua.

Joyce Gabiou
Florida Artist of the Year

Award-winning artist, Joyce Gabiou, began her art
career in the Twin Cities and remembers its great
teachers and cultural scene.
Since then, she’s moved many times as a corporate
wife, continuing her art education. Her style
has changed immensely from traditional to
contemporary abstract.
Love of experimental painting has led her to exploring mixed media.
Her work is intuitive and ever-evolving. Informed memory, limited palette,
and workshops with renowned artists are some of her inspiration. Current
work on canvas involves the use of collage, acrylics, and texture.
In Jacksonville, Florida she teaches collage and mixed media painting.
She was elected Artist of the Year with the Jacksonville Watercolor Society
and earned signature status with the National Collage Society in 2014.

Robert was raised in Northeast Iowa. He never pursued his
personal passion with art until later in life. He worked in the
art industry as a sales representative for an art company in
Salt Lake City, Utah and also worked in a Fine Art gallery
in Sarasota, Florida. It was after these informative work
experiences in the art business that he finally pursued his
drive as an Artist. Robert is self-taught and has been painting
for over eight years. He is inspired by natural colors in the
sky and landscapes and primitive art; from this he has drawn
on his own concepts and designs when he creates his art
pieces. Robert has art collectors in Canada, Europe, and the USA.

digital images. I produce
speculative artwork as
well as do commission
work. I use acrylics on
canvas primarily because
of the drying time. The speculative work that you see
listed in my shop can be purchased with or without
framing. I am drawn to those subjects that most men are
drawn to, but I can reproduce anything that I can see or
comprehend. I have done the portraits of three of the
Futurity winners, which is to say portraiture of horse
and rider in action as captured by the press during the
event. Wedding portrait, still life, a moment in history;
what is it that you want to celebrate?

The Art of Business
Your Life As a Work of Art
design an intended response in them, and take actions that inspire
that response.
With so much talk recently of Donald Trump treating his run for
the presidency as a work of performance art, I got to thinking
more about the nature of art and life.
We wouldn’t necessarily get it “right” every time, but our
attention would be in an incredibly useful place, and we would
learn very quickly how different people responded to different
things that we do, and we could get better and better at realizing
our visions.
by Pete Machalek, partner of SagePresence
I got into film because I loved the impact that it had on me. At the
same time, I enjoyed the experience of creating something new
and original. Plus, I really liked the idea of impacting other people
and inspiring their reactions.
It’s easy to think of art as being the thing that is created: The film,
the play, the dance, the sculpture, the painting. But are any of
those things truly art if they don’t have an audience?
What if the work of art isn’t the piece, but the audience reaction
to the piece? Then maybe every one of us could be an artist.
All we would need to do is focus on the people around us,
www.tctosca.com
Everything that we do and say would be artistic expressions of
our intentions, and we would be living in a work of art of our
own creation.
