1. Overview
1.1. TheultimateresponsibilityfortheUniversity'swebsiterestswiththeUniversityMarketing
andCommunicationsDirectorate(“Marketing”).
1.2. Responsibilityforday-to-daymaintenanceofSchool/Faculty/Directorate/Research
InstitutepageslieswiththeSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstitute.
1.3. ResponsibilityforthetechnicalmanagementofwebsystemslieswithITServices,although

1.4. Marketingisresponsibleforwebtrainingandensuringcompliancewithstandards.
2. Ownership
2.1. EachSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstituteisexpectedtodesignateaweb
maintainer(s)tooverseetheSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstitutesiteandliaise
withMarketing.Thewebmaintainer(s)willberesponsibleforcheckingandapprovingall
newandeditedcontentbeforepublishingtothepublicweb.Contentapproversdonot
needtobecontenteditors.
2.2. WebpagesfortheStudents’Unionandforaffiliatedsocietiesandclubsarethe
responsibilityoftheStudents’UnionandwillnotbehostedwithintheUniversitycontent
managementsystem(CMS).
3. School/ Faculty/ Directorate/ Research Institute Responsibilities
3.1. CoreUniversity-relatedweb-basedinformationshouldbehostedintheCMSandnotoff
campus.
3.2. Schools,Faculties,DirectoratesandResearchInstitutesareexpectedtotakeday-to-day
responsibilityfortheirownsites.Thisentailsensuringthatcontentiscurrent,relevantand
accurateandmeetsguidelinesfor:visualcontent;Universitywebusabilitystandards;legal
requirements,includingcopyrightpermissions;writingstyle;andessentialcontent
requirements.Marketinghasproducedaseriesofdocumentsdesignedtomakeiteasyfor
webmaintainerstomeettheseguidelines;Marketingwillalsooffertrainingandsupport
(seebelow,section4).
3.3. MarketingwillworkcloselywithSchools,Faculties,DirectoratesandResearchInstitutesto
helpthemtomeettheseguidelines.Intheeventthat,despitethis,seriousbreachesoflegal
requirementsoccur,Marketingmayneedtocorrectthesewithoutpriorconsultation,
althoughnotificationofchangeswillbemade.
3.4. EnoughstaffshouldbenominatedasSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstituteweb
maintainerssothattheservicecancontinuedespiteillnesses,holidayanddepartures.The
nominatedstaffshouldbeallowedsufficienttimetocarryouttheirrole.Contingency
shouldbeacknowledgedinanyBusinessContinuityPlan.
3.5. NewusersoftheCMSareexpectedtoattendoneofthetrainingcoursesprovidedby
MarketingthroughStaffDevelopment.
3.6. WebmaintainersarerequestedtonotifyMarketingwhenmaintainers/usersoftheCMSno
longerneedaccesstoeditpages.
3.7. AnycomplaintsreceivedconcerninginformationpublishedonanyUniversitywebserver
shouldbeforwardedtoMarketing
3.8. RegisteredCMSusersshouldnotmaketheirlogindetailsavailabletonon-registeredusers.
3.9. AllexternalwebsitesaffiliatedwiththeUniversityshouldbenotifiedtoMarketing.
4. Marketing/ IT Services
4.1. MarketingwillofferWebmaintainerstrainingviaStaffDevelopmentcoursesandwillalso
beon-handtohelpwithenquiries.Marketingdoesnothavesufficientresourcetomaintain
School/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstitutepages,andwillbeabletodosoonlyfor
shortperiodsinemergencies.ShouldMarketingneedtomaintainaSchool/Faculty/
Directorate/ResearchInstitutesitebecausethatunithasnotbeenabletomakeadequate
provisionformaintainingitsownpages,MarketingmaychargetheSchool/Faculty/
Directorate/ResearchInstitutefortheservice.Beforeitdoesthisitwillconsultwiththe
School/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstituteandalertittothesituationandgive
appropriatenotice.
4.2. Marketingisresponsibleforensuringthatstandardsaresetforusabilityandaccessibility.
MarketingwillinformSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstitutemaintainersof
changestowebservices,legislationandguidelines,andofferappropriateguidanceand
supportintheimplementationofthesechanges.
4.3. ProvisionismadeformembersofUniversitystafftopublishapersonalprofilepage.These
pagesshouldinallcasesmeettheacceptedUniversitystandards.Usersshouldbearinmind
thattheyarelegallyresponsibleforallcontentonpersonalprofilepages,wikisandblogs.
4.4. Marketinghastheresponsibilityforactingoncomplaintsaboutillegaloroffensivematerial
onthesite.Itmayissuearequestforsuchmaterialtoberemovedorchanged,ormay
removethismaterialitself.
4.5. Inthecaseofpersistentmisuseofpersonalprofilepages,Marketingmayremoveaccessto
theCMSandmayaskITServicestosuspendITaccounts.
4.6. ITServiceshasresponsibilityforthesecurityandmaintenanceofwebsystems.ITServicesis
notresponsibleforsupportingtherunningofnon-staticcontentorwebapplications
systemsforaSchool/Faculty/Directorate/ResearchInstitute,orusers,unlessthereare
agreementsinplace.Adviceonimplementingwebpagesrequiringnon-staticcontentis
