The Village Surgery Bramhall Autumn Newsletter 2015 Weekly Newsletter Flu jabs It’s flu jab season again! Flu is a highly infectious illness that spreads rapidly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are carrying the virus. Flu symptoms can hit quite suddenly and severely. They usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles. You can often get a cough and sore throat. Because flu is caused by a virus and not bacteria, antibiotics won't treat it, so protect yourself today and book yourself a flu jab. Please book in at reception for your annual flu jab if you are over 65 or in an at risk group (see below). We are running adult flu clinics on: Saturday 10th Oct and Saturday 17th Oct. If you have any of the following problems (however old you are) please also book in for a flu jab: a serious heart complaint a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including asthma (needing a regular brown/purple inhaler), bronchitis and emphysema serious kidney disease diabetes lowered immunity due to disease or treatment such as steroid medication or cancer treatment if you have had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) if you have a problem with your spleen or you have had your spleen removed serious liver disease multiple sclerosis (MS) or some other diseases of the nervous system pregnant are a carer have a learning disability If you do not fit into any of the above criteria but would like a flu jab – you can have a flu vaccine privately at local chemists, supermarkets and private hospitals. Childrens Flu Vaccine In the autumn/winter of 2015/16 the annual nasal spray flu vaccine will be available for children aged two, three and four years old as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme. The vaccine will be offered routinely to all children aged two, three and four on August 31 2015. That is, children with a date of birth on or after September 1 2010 and on or before August 31 2013. The flu vaccine for children is given as a single dose of nasal spray squirted up each nostril. Not only is it needle-free (a big advantage for children), the nasal spray works even better than the injected flu vaccine. It’s quick and painless and will mean your child is less likely to become ill if they come into contact with the flu virus. Childrens flu clinics are being run by the nurses, please book at reception. New Trainee GP – Dr Mir We are fortunate to have a new GP training with us until February 2016 called Dr Mir. Dr Mir is a fully qualified doctor but is now taking extra training to specialize as a GP. Dr Mir has longer appointment slots to allow her to ask more questions and she may ask for advice from the GP partners. We are sure she will make a valuable addition to the team and we hope everyone will make her feel welcome. Staff News Adele Callan and Karen Green are both moving on to new challenges and opportunities. Adele has worked at the Practice for over 11 years, and both will be greatly missed. We wish them well for the future and would like to thank them for all their help and hard work. Joining the team are Sophie Hall, Daniel Whittall and Tracey Broadbent, who are all going to be working in reception and behind the scenes with administration support. The newer staff members are all learning and may need to ask for guidance, so please bear this in mind.
