Canine Vaccinations
There are several different types of vaccinations available for your dog. An annual physical exam is
required prior to the administration of most of these vaccines.
Rabies is a fatal brain infection that is transmissible to humans by bite wounds. Vaccinating your dog for rabies
protects them and is required by law.
DHLPPC is a vaccination that protects your dog from these different diseases:
D (Canine Distemper) - severe disease with intestinal, respiratory, and neurological complications
H (Adenovirus Types 1 and 2) – causes infectious hepatitis and respiratory disease
L (Leptospirosis) – can lead to kidney damage and is transmissible to humans
P (Parainfluenza) – causes a cough which can be especially severe in puppies
P (Parvovirus) -- causes severe and profuse bloody vomiting and diarrhea leading to dehydration
and death – especially in puppies
C (Coronavirus) – also causes severe diarrhea that can be life-threatening
Bordetella or “kennel cough” is a respiratory disease that causes severe coughing that could lead to secondary
lung infections and/or damage. If your dog will be boarding in our hospital, it is required that they be kept up to
date on this vaccine (as well as DHLPPC, Canine Influenza, and Rabies) for their protection.
Canine Influenza (H3N8) is a viral respiratory disease that can be very severe and in some cases can be fatal. It
often mimics “kennel cough”. Any dog that gets the Bordetella vaccine should also get this vaccine.
Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and is spread mainly by the bite of deer ticks although other
ticks can also spread disease. We live in a high risk area for this disease. Good tick control and vaccination will
help reduce your dog’s risk. Ask about a blood test available to detect your dog’s exposure prior to vaccination.
Just like children, puppies require a series of vaccinations starting as young as 5-6 weeks of age to
acquire the appropriate level of immunity to protect from these infectious diseases. Non vaccinated adults also
require a series of initial vaccines. Some vaccines require annual booster while others can be given every three
years. Depending on our findings during your dogs physical and the history you give us we will recommend the
appropriate vaccines for your pet.
It is very important to the health of your dog to have an annual physical and to keep all vaccines,
medications, and tests up to date. We will send you a reminder for your dog’s annual physical and any
appropriate vaccines and tests.
