Join colleagues from around the region
to learn about the opportunities and
challenges surrounding transcatheter
aortic valve replacement.
Regional and national leaders in valve
therapy will lead interactive sessions
and present challenging, instructive
cases including a recorded case.
SCOPE & OBJECTIVES
Intended Audience and Scope of Practice
This activity is designed for cardiologists, surgeons, internists,
intensivists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, family physicians, advanced
practice practitioners, surgical and cath-lab technicians, perfusionists
and other allied health personnel who participate in the care of
patients with advanced heart disease.
Elements of Competence
This CME activity has been designed to change learner competence
and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of
patient care and procedural skills, and medical knowledge.
Practice Gaps and Needs
“Last year’s meeting was a resounding
success and this year is shaping
up to be even better!
There will a broader emphasis on treatment
of structural heart disease with more
challenging cases. I think this meeting will
appeal to all physicians, residents, nurses
and technicians who currently
care for patients with advanced
heart disease or who may be thinking
about expanding their scope of practice.”
Amish Raval, Course Director
There is a knowledge gap among cardiologists, cardiac surgeons
and primary care individuals pertaining to valve procedures, patient
eligibility criteria, device oriented concerns, expected outcomes and
follow-up recommendations for valve procedures. For example,
transcatheter aortic valve replacement for symptomatic, severe
aortic valve stenosis is now the national standard of care for high
risk and inoperable patients, though this is not widely known. This
symposium will feature an open and balanced discussion of the
evidence and the pros/cons of the approved devices.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the indications and contra-indications for transcatheter
aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
2. Discuss major complications that can arise with TAVR.
3. Identify minimally invasive methods to treat valve prostheses
related complications such as stuck leaflet, peri-valvular leak,
hemolysis and restenosis.
4. Review the follow-up management of patients who have received
transcatheter valve therapy.
