M. P. Paulton, PhD ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute Kochi, India Indian brackish water oyster, Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) Approach…. Indian brackish water oyster Crassostrea madrasenis is endemic to Indian waters. The mariculture of this species is gaining momentum in Kerala & Karnataka among self help groups with the technologies developed by CMFRI. Laboratory acclimated Oysters were exposed to 37ºC to 45ºC for one hour and observed for survival to determine thermal limits (SLT & LT). Relative gene expression on thermal shock were studied. Survival of LT or induced thermo tolerance was studied in oysters recovering SLT. Achievements …….. Sub lethal (44ºC) and lethal temperatures (47ºC) were determined for the species. Overall up regulation of Hsp70, Hsp90, SOD, CAT and GPX were observed in oysters recovering from SLT. Established the phenomenon of Induced thermo tolerance by observing the survival of LT in oysters recovering from the sub lethal thermal shock. Oysters showed 75% survivability up to 26 days, of SLT exposure which is a record in any animals. Outcomes and future prospects…. LT reported for the same species in the year 2003 (BARC) was 45ºC showing that the Indian edible oyster increases its thermo resistance at par with raise in water and atmosphere. The study linked the up regulation of stress management genes on exposure to SLT and the survival of LT The study provided scientific evidence about the extra caliber of Indian Edible Oyster in combating climate change and thereby considered as a winner species which is prepared for stress. Qualifies as a species for food security.
