GENERAL Te lep hone repeate r TP -7 is intended to use on fo ur wire Jin es eith er as a throug h or a term in a l repeate r. It is arra nged f r portab le field u se or for mounting on a r elay rack in an office. It co nsists esse ntially of two two-stage a mplifi er s ar ranged o t hat th e in puts and outputs can be sw itched to prese n t eith er 300 ohm or 1200 ohm im pedan ce to the lin e as req uired or 600 o hm impedance w hen use d a a ter minal repeater. In ord er to co mpen sate for variation of the transm ission los w ith freq uency ove r the lin e, a n eq ua li ze r w hi ch can I e switched is prov ided. The switched positi ons make possible a fl at o·ain fr eq uency cha racteri stic or one whi ch slopes to co m pe nsa te for diffe rent lengt hs of lin e. Each ampli fier has a n ope ratin g gain of abo ut 35 db at 1000 cy cl es per second irrespective of the eq ua li ze r se tting. Under norm a l ope ra tin g conditi ons th e re1 eate r i capab le of ha nd lin g a powe r leve l of + 20 dbm. A power unit is prov ided, wh ich su pp li e t he r eq uired power for ope rat in g the re1 eate r fro m eith er the A. . main s or from a 12 vo lt battery w ith a 100 cy cl e per second vibrator. In add ition, a m eans is prov id e I so t hat th e powe r may be obtain ed from local 24- 130 v batteri es. T he two tubes of each a mplifi er are mounted in a w ell left a nd ri g ht of the verti cal ce nte r lin e a nd a re cover ed by a r emovab le plate so t ha t t hey ar e read il y accessibl e. A plu g is mounted o n th e bottom of th e chassis for making the pow er conn ections by means of t he s pecia l cable s uppli ed w ith the repeater. 2.2 Power Unit The equipm ent for the power supply is as ·embled on a chassis similar in design to the repeate r unit as show n in photographs F ig. Sa and Fig. Sb and in the bottom panel of Fig. 4. It contain s the power transfo rm er, rectifier and fi ltering arrangemen ts for operatino" lhe heaters and plates of th e tubes in the repeater from A. . mains. W hen a 12 vo lt torage battery is the so urce of power, it i · used in co njuncti n with a 100 c. p. s. vibrator to energize the tran former feed ing the rectifier. Under thi condition t he heaters of the vacuum tubes are operated direct ly from the I attery. T erminal s, fuses and switches arc mounted on the pane l of the chassis asse mbly. A plu g for connecting power to th e repeate r is moun ted on the bottom of the chassis. 2.3 Assembled Units Both the repeale r and the power u nit have brackets at ll1c ends so that th ey can l.)e mou nted on a relay rack as show n in Fig. 4 o r in a case as shown in F ig . 6a. A wooden case is p rov id ed for mounting both the repeater uni t and the powe r unit. Th is case is 20" x 8" x 9;;.;1." and is eq uipp ed with straps so that it is read ily portab le, as ·hown in photog raph s F ig. 6a and 6b . T he case with rq eater a nd power uni t mounted in it weighs about 38 po un ds. Wh en the cover is opene l, lhe ter minals, sw itches and co ntrols are exposed so that they are readi ly avai lab le f r makin g con nect ions and operation, as show n in photograr h Fig. 6a. The power from the power unit is ·uppli ed to the repeater unit by mean s o f a cabl e w ith a socket on each end, wh ich ma tches the plu g mounted on the uni t·. Two spare tubes, two spare fuses, a socket fo r connectin g the repeater to a 24 v - 130 v supply, a spare vibrator and a pare socket to fit th e plug marked A. ·.Main are mounted in t he cove r of th case. When the repeater and power unit are m unted together on a relay rack, t he same cabl e w ith sockets on each end as is used with the case may be used for making the co nn ection to supp ly the power to the repeater unit, ot herwise a longer cab le between plu gs wi ll be required. In case the repeater is install ed where the office batteries are avail able for operatin a it, either on an emergency basis or in place of the power uni t, a socket i provided which fi.ts t he plu g in the repeater a nd can be wired so t hat the proper co nnections can be rea lily made to the batteries, as shown in F ig . 12. T his socket is mounted in the cover with the spare parts. 3. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION 3.1 Repeater Unit Th e repeater unit consists of two amp lifiers, with an eq ua lizer for each and 3 position switches to change the gain frequency characteristic from Aat to different slopes to co mpen sate fo r lin e conditions . Switches are a lso provided to chan ge th e input and output impedance of the amplifi ers from 300 to 1200 ohms and to con nec t the input of one amplifier and th e output of the other to a two-wire 600 ohm connection fo r terminal use . The diagrams of Fig. 7b show the different arrangements possible when th is repeater is connected on a four-wire line. 2 The two amp lifi ers are identi ca l in design. T he cir cuit of one is show n sc hema ti call y in F ig. 8. The transformer T1A actu a ll y consists of a repeat in g coil and in put transformer co ntain ed in one case . The eq uali zer is designed to have a nominal im pedance of 600 ohm s and is co nn ected between t he repeatin g coil and t he in put transformer. The repeatin g coil has an im pedance ratio of 300:600 o hm s between th e 1-3 and 6-7 windings and 1200-600 o hm s between the 1-3, 4-5 windin gs connected in se ries a nd the w in ding 6-7. T he two halves of the 1-3 w indin g a nd t he winding 1-3 and 4-5 are accurate ly balanced so that the terminals 2 a nd 4 may be use d as a phantom tap for throug h signalin g at 20 c.p .s. T he pi-oper co nnections, de[ end in g o n whether it is the two-wire s id e of a term in a l repeate r or on the im peda nce of the li ne fo r four-wire ope rali on, a re obtain ed by mean s of a 3 positi n sw itch show n schemat ica ll y in Fig. 9 as S- 1. Positi on 1 conn ects two windings of the TlA input co il of amp lifi er A to two w in din gs of the T2B o utp ut coil of a mplifier B ·o as to give a ·two way or hyb ri d coil conn ecti on. It will be no ted th at: the windings 4- 5 of eac h co il are conn ected in seri es opposing through a conden er so that tra nsmi ssion from the two-wire lin e divides eqna ll y between t hem. The currents indu ced in the windings 1-3 of each coil , whic h ar e conn ected in seri es a idin g through the co nd enser and 600 o hm resistance to fo rm the network circuit, ar e in opposite directions so that littl e or no ene rgy i lost in the network depending o n the balance 1 etween the 600 ohm r esistance and th e lin e imp edance. The energy from the lin e i divided between the w in dings 4-5 of TlA and T2B coil s so t hat one ha lf is transmitted into t he in pu t of t he A amp lifi er and one ha lf into the output of th e B a mJlifi er a nd is lost in the plate circuit. O n the ot h er hand , for transmission co min g fro m a mplif1 er B, currents are in duced in the lin e a nd netwo rk circui ts through the windings 4-5 a nd 1-3 of the T2B coil. These currents Aow in to windings 4-5 and 1-3 of the Tl A co il in opJ osite direction s so that no energy passes into ampliher A when th e terminal eq uipm ent is balan ced by the network. O n e ha lf the energy received is transmitted to the two-w ire lin e and on e ha lf is lost in th e netwo rk. For hyb rid coil ope ration, the win lings 1-3 a nd 4-5 of eac h of the co il s TIA a nd TlB mu st be accurately balanced. The cond ense r in the lin e side of th e hyb ri d co il co nn ection is r eq uired to block a ny direct current o n the lin e and to provid e phantom taps which are taken fro m each sid e of this co nd en. er. This conden ser is balanced in the network circuit by one of app rox im ate ly eq ua l value. In order to fa cili tate rep lace m ent, if one of t hese condense rs becomes defective, they a rc . elected in g ro up s of a pprox im ately eq ua l capacities and marked A, D or C, th e eff ective one should be rep laced from the gro up corre pondin g to the letter on t he o ne replaced. If one of the same let ter is not available, then both s hould be r ep laced with a pair from one of the oth er groups. Thi s potentio meter is co nn ecte d to t he g rid of t he Vl.A (VT 198A) tub e so t hat th e gain of the a mr lifi er can I c co ntroll ed co ntinu ou ly in a r ange fr om 0 o utp ut lo a gain of abou t 35 db. T he impedance rati o of windings 8-9 a nd 1-3 r 8-9 a nd 1-3, 4-5 in se ries is such as lo giv e the op timum imp edance terminati on f r the p late o f the V2 tube when winding 1-3 i termin ate d with 300 oh ms o r w indin g 1-3, 4-5 in se ri es a rc ter min a ted in 1200 ohm s. Th e windin gs 1-2, 2-3 a nd 1-3, 4-5 are accurate ly bala nce d so tha t coil taps 2 a nd 4 m ay be used as phantom laps for co nn ec tion to the correspondin g te rmin a ls o f th e T1A or T2B tran sfo rmer to byr as sig nalin g curren ts of 20 c.p.s. Th e repeater is capab le of ha ndling a n o utput pow er of 100 milliwat ts or + 20 dbm wit h ab ut 3!f'o harmonics. A neon la mp with tra nsfo rm er (T-3) is prov id ed to be used as a leve l indi cator. T hi s in dicator may be co nn ected across the output of either amp lifi er by throwin g the " level" sw itc h S4 to eith er A orB side, as show n in F ig . 8. Th e gain co ntrol is th en a lju ·ted until the lamp gl ow s, w hi ch indicates a n output of 6 to 8 dbm. Th e moni torin g termin a ls A and B ar e co nn ec ted through a swi tc h ma rked TALK. to th e monitorin g windings a nd also to th e output termin a ls of th e T2A a nd T2B coil s re pe ctiv ely. This a rrange m ent makes it possill e to monitor and talk on the lin e in eith er direction from the monitorin g termin a ls. 3.2 Power Unit Th e circuit fo r furni shin g power for the ret eate r is shown in Fig. 12. I t is a rranged for ope ration either fro m the A. C. supply of 100-125 or 200-250 v or fro m a 12 vo lt bat tery. Wh en t he A. C. is used and co nnec ted to the ·ocket ma rked A. . Main s, th e switch S6 sho uld be thrown to th e positi on marked "M I N " and the w itch S7, which conn ects th e ma in s voltage to th e tran ·fo rm er T , ad ju . ted to the vo ltage of supply . Thi s ad ju stment sho uld a lways be made w ith sw itch S6 ope n in ord er l o prevent the possibility of ext rem e vo ltages at th e hi g h voltage windin g. Th e main s vo ltage is stepp ed up by the transform er T a nd the high voltage fro m termin a l 10-11 r ectifi ed by th e rectifi er, fi ltered and resista nces prov id ed to g ive th e req uired D. C. vo ltage s at th e terminal s. Th e hea ters a re sup plied from a 12 vo lt w in ding 13-14 connected through one f the p les of 6 sw it ch. W hen th e batte ry i used, the switch S6 is thrown to position marked BAT and the battery co nn ected to termin a ls marked 12 v with polarity a· marked. Thi OJ erates the vibrator which, co nn ected to a windin g of th e tra nsfo rmer, generates th e hi g h voltage across termina ls 10-11 which i r ectifi ed an I fi lt ered, as previous ly, giving the r equired D. C. vo ltage·. T he power for th e h eate rs i furn ish ed di r ec tly fr m th e batte ry t hroug h a p le of th e S6 witch wh en thrown in th e BAT directio n. A fter everal t ho u and hours of servi ce, t he rec tif1er resistance goes up due to agin g whi ch r ed uces the 130 a nd 110 vo lt A. C. plate battery voltages . At that tim e th e co nn ection on te rmin a l 11 of the power transfo rm er may be r emove I a nd co nn ected to the hi g her potential terminal 12 to co mp ensate for thi s cha nge. 4. OPERATION 4.1 General A four wire circuit uses two pairs of wires, one pair for talking in 5 one direction and th e ot her pair for the ot her directio n . Repeaters are us uall y in sta ll ed at t he terminals and between at regular interva ls where ever possible. The gain s of the int erm ed ia te r epeate rs make up for the loss of the lin e prece din g each one. In the case f the terminal repeaters, one sid e is co nn ec ted through a hy brid coil a rra nge m ent o th at tran smi ion ca n take p lace in either direction from the sw itchboard. The los fr eq uency characteristic of the lin e is co m pensated for by the eq ua lizer except in case of the amp lifter of the terminal repeate rs ·endin g into t he lin e, in whi ch case the gain fr eque ncy cha racteri stic is adjusted to be Aat I ecause the succee din g line is eq uali zed in the next r epeate r on the line. Fig. 7a s hows sc hema ti call y a four -w ire circuit eq ui pped with r epeater s. Whi le the lengt h of the cal le I etwcen repeater s may vary, this ar ran ge ment s hows 15 mil e of British fie ld quad cab le, which i the maximum leng th of thi · type of ca bl e that ca n be eq uali zed up to 10 K. C. with th e avail ab le repeater gain. E qu a li zat ion is prov id ed for 7y;; a nd 15 miles of thi s cab le, the proper cho ice of which w ill g iv e a satisfactory co mpro mi se eq ua li zation for any t-eq uir ed lengt h up t 15 mil es. 4-2 Power Connection Wh en the repea ters wit h power units are in stall ed a t the spac in g determin ed upon, they may be placed in operati on by co nn ectin g power fro m th e main s or a 12 vo lt battery to the power uni t. If the mains are used , a power cable w ith p lu g and socket connecto r, as how n in F ig . 13, is provided to co nn ect between the main s o utlet a nd to a plu g mount ed on the power unit ma rk ed A. C. MAIN . If the battery is used, it i co nn ected to the termina ls marked 12 V BAT. with the 1 o larity as in lica ted. I£ th e units are relay rack mo unted, the co nnec tions between th em ·hould be made by means of this s ket end e I cabl e before closing the power sw itc h. Befo re cl osing the sw itch to the MAINS sid e, th e sw itch marked M AI S VOLTAGE sho uld be ad ju sted to a point w ithin the ra nge of th e s upply vo ltage in ord er to pr vent hi o-b vo ltages wh ich w ou ld occur if th e switch was on a low vo ltage poin t wh en hi g her suppl y vo ltages are used. (\ l If the repeater is located where it can be operated from the ce ntral office batteries, the spare ocket prov ided for that purpose should be wired, as show n in Fig. 12, and p lu gged in to the receptacle on the repeater unit. W ith power co nn ected to t he repeater uni t it shoul d operate sat isfacto ril y. I-:l.owever, if the means a re avail ab le, it is desirab le to make a ga in test before conn ectin g it to the line. 4.3 Line Connections The sw itches marked 1 and 2 shou ld be operated to g ive the required imp edance. The co nn ect ions of the 1 airs f the quad to the repeaters may be determined by talkin g tests between ad jace nt repeaters. T he pairs, identified as in co min g in eit her direction, shou ld be connected to the two termin als marked A IN a nd B IN between them and those id entifi ed as outgoin g hould be co nn ected to termin als marked A OUT and B OUT between t hem. ln the case of a term in a l repeater, the pair lead in g from the switchboa rd should be co nn ected to the term in als marked 2-W between t hem. 4.4 Circuit Operation W it h the. e connections made for each repeater the ·irc ui t is ready for " linin g up ," which is done by ftrst settin o· the equalize r in either direction to co rrespond to the kn own length of cab le preceding the repeater except in th e case of the sendin o· sid e of th e t erminal repeater w hi ch is a lways set on step 1 (A. at gain ). T hi s being clo ne, the p roper gain for eac h repeater may be determ in ed by sendin g a milliwatt of 1000 c.p.s. tone from the two-wire side of first one and then the oth er terminal repeater a nd ad ju stin g the gain of the successive rep eaters, w ith the LEVEL sw itch cl sed in the proper direction, until the neon lamp just g lows, except that t he gain of the receiv ing sid e of tf1e distant term in al repeater s hould be ad justed to give th e requ ired net loss as determ in ed, wherev er possil le, by mean of an overall transmission measuremen t. T he minimum net loss is deter min ed by the balance of the terminatin g circuit again t 600 ohm :, a point be low which the circuit wou ld tend to sin g . 4.5 Monitoring and Talking In or ler to monitor in either direction a telep hone set or monitorin g receive r ( not furnished with the repeater) shou lei be conn ected between eit her the terminal A orB and the middle term in al or between A a nd B for both direct ions. In order to talk on the line in either direction, a telephone se t shoul d be con nected to the term in als A and B and switch marked TALK thrown to A r B the direction req uired.
