Lesson Overview Title: CAST’s UDL LESSON BUILDER Welcome to the Himalayans Author: Joyce Howard Subject: Science Grade Level(s): 8 Duration: 3-‐4 Days Subject Area: Earth and Science – Plate Tectonics Unit Description: In this unit students will be looking at the various changes in the earth’s surface based on the theory of plate tectonics. Beginning with the land mass of Pangaea, the plates of the earth have gradually moved apart and towards each other to create the different continents and land formations found on Earth. Discussions of the history of plate tectonics, the natural consequences of their movements, and the resulting impact on humanity will be covered. Throughout the unit, students will be given opportunities to explore, not just the different geological formations around the world due to plate tectonics, they will also look at its impact on the culture, geography, politics and economics of the area. Over the next three days, students will be delving deeper in to plate tectonics to learn why and how this natural even affects our planet. During this time, the students will look at different major crust formations that have shape the surface, both continental and oceanic. As they explore these affects, they will have opportunities to apply their knowledge to predicting what the earth might look like in the next 100, 1,000 , and 10,000 years. (9) Earth and space. The student knows that natural events can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to: (A) describe the historical development of evidence that supports plate tectonic theory; (B) relate plate tectonics to the formation of crustal features; 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression. c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: a. plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. Lesson Description for 3 Days: State Standards: National Technology Standards Joyce Howard EDLD 5364 – SP 11 – ET 8026 3/12/11 c. evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. d. process data and report results. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: a. advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology. b. exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. c. demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning. d. exhibit leadership for digital citizenship. Goals Unit Goals: Lesson Goals: Methods Anticipatory Set: Introduce And Model New Knowledge: The student knows that natural events can impact Earth systems. o Explain the way the earth’s surface has been changed due to plate tectonics; and o Explain and indicate some of the evidence that supports the theory of plate tectonics. Play a video clip from “Monsters, Inc.” where the Abominable Snowman welcomes them to the Himalayans. Have the students, in groups of 3, do a “Round Table” cooperative activity (Kagan Cooperative Learning) where they write down what they know about the Himalayans. This is open to anything they know about the area or the people. They will share this information with the class placing it into a graphic organizer using the interactive white board (IWB). We will springboard from here into what other natural formations they believe have been shaped by plate tectonics. Note: Some of the obvious formations would be mountains, certain valleys (rifts) and islands. There may be several mentions of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis; however, these are the actions caused from the movement of the plates that end up creating the surface formations. Kagan, S. (1994). Kagan Cooperative Learning. Kagan Publishing. San Clemente, CA. Students will be divided up into groups to complete a lab to introduce the new information. This will allow students hands on activity to explore the idea of changes in the surfaces. At the end of the lab, each student will reflect on their findings and enter both on the class blog. Students will be encouraged to view blogs of classmates and add their opinions. (formative). This will be followed up with several different videos, images and readings about many of the well-known surfaces changes on earth. Current events may be brought in at this time. Provide Guided Practice: Joyce Howard Using the activity “Geo Café,” students will choose both individual and group activities to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts. The activities are structured for all levels of learning abilities and physical disabilities. EDLD 5364 – SP 11 – ET 8026 3/12/11 Provide Independent Practice: Assessment Formative/Ongoing Assessment: Summative/End Of Lesson Assessment: The “Geo Café” assignment has an individual independent practice component to it. Classroom observations, lab report, Geo Café Rubric and blog entries. The final assignment, students will need to choose one out of several ability appropriate assignments which they will need to research and present to the class in any fashion they choose.
