Corn Seed Treatments for 2013 NEW for 2013, DuPont Pioneer customers have the option to order Poncho® 1250 + VOTiVOTM seed treatment for selected Pioneer® brand products as part of the Pioneer’s high rate corn seed treatment offering. According to Bayer, Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO seed treatment helps ensure your corn seed is protected from the moment it’s planted all the way through the critical stages of early season development. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO provides a new biological mode of action that introduces a revolutionary way to protect corn seedlings and roots against nematodes. It contains a unique strain of bacteria that lives and grows with young corn roots, creating a breakthrough living barrier that nematodes can’t break through. When VOTIVO is paired with the top-performing power of Poncho 1250, the result is consistently higher yields and a positive return on investment. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO advantages: • With the 1250* rate of Poncho, growers get increased control of wireworm, black cutworm, European chafer (white grub) and other early season pests as well as control of corn rootworm. • New mode of action protects against nematode damage from a wide range of species. • The bacteria in Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO colonize and grow around the root to create a living barrier of protection. • The product is very stable in the formulation, on the seed and in the root zone. • Maximizes early season plant stands and vigour. • Higher yields—current data from Bayer shows a 2.5 bu/ acre yield increase over Poncho 1250*. 2013 Corn Seed Treatment Options • Cruiser® 250 + Maxim® Quattro is the standard package for Pioneer corn products. • Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO + Maxim Quattro is available on selected Pioneer products on an as-ordered basis. Questions and Answers regarding Poncho® 1250 + VOTiVO™ corn seed treatment What does new Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO include? Pioneer’s high rate corn seed treatment offering now includes Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO is a seed-applied product that combines proven early season insect control with protection from a broad range of nematodes in corn. It provides a new biological mode of action that introduces revolutionary living barrier science and is paired with the 1250 rate of Poncho seed-applied insecticide. How does Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO protect plants against nematodes? The bacteria in Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO are applied directly to the seed, and once the seed is planted and the environment is favourable for seed germination, the bacteria begin to grow and multiply. These bacteria continue to increase in number side-by-side with the developing root, growing with the plant to protect roots from nematode damage during the critical stage of plant establishment. The bacteria compete with nematodes for space and food resources. The Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO bacteria form a protective barrier around the young root in the rhizosphere (root zone) of the soil. The bacteria use root exudates—a food source for nematodes as well as a means that nematodes use to find plant roots. Fewer nematodes therefore reach the root surface, and some even die from lack of nutrients. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO does not directly kill nematodes, but it renders many of them ineffective. Do corn genetics offer any additional protection against nematodes? Presently there are no commercial corn hybrids with genetic resistance, although certain hybrids with stronger root systems may be more tolerant to injury from nematodes. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO will provide nematode protection as the corn plant is developing and establishing a stand. Does Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO provide any disease protection? Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO decreases nematode damage to roots. Nematodes feed by piercing root tissue with their stylets. The ensuing punctures serve as points of entry for several significant plant pathogens that cause seedling diseases. Is Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO safe to the seed, including carryover seed? The germination of seed treated with Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO has been evaluated in the field and in the laboratory using industry-standard germination tests These studies have shown Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO has no negative impact on germination speed or plant stands in the field. Just as with Poncho 1250, Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO treated seed should be carried over under conditions of controlled temperature and humidity. Because Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO contains a living microorganism, are there any special requirements for storing the product or treated seed? Store in cool, dry conditions. Once Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO is applied to the seed, treated seed should be handled in a manner that assures seed viability. Transportation through hot environments will not affect the viability of Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO unless at higher temperatures for continuous extended periods of more than three months. What yield benefits does Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO provide? Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO provides protection that improves plant vigour, which in turn can contribute to end-of-year yield benefits. Bayer reports that Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO has delivered an average 2.5 bu/A over Poncho 1250 in field trials. Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO can deliver even higher yields in areas that have economically significant nematode populations. What insects does Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO control? Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO is labeled for many important early season corn pests, including corn rootworm, black cutworm (suppression), wireworm, and European chafer (white grub).
