Snow Bow
Harriet Ziefert, Author
Yukiko Kido

Ages: 4-6
Call Number: Juv Primer Ziefert, Harriet
Primer: Kido’s colorful Japanese anime style illustrations enhance Ziefert’s innovative primer. Word
families (eet, ate and ow) are grouped in chapters. Cutouts at the bottom of the page allow a learning
reader to flip to a new opening sound combined with a known word family. Subsequent pages in each
chapter have simple phrases using the newly learned vocabulary with illustrations as hints to the
meaning of the phrase. I like this fresh new approach.

Fighting Sickness (series: Building Blocks of Science)
Joseph Midthun, Author
Samuel Hiti, Illustrator
© 2014 World Book, a Scott Fetzer Company
Ages: 7-11
Call Number: Juv 616.079 M629f
Nonfiction: Fighting Sickness presents an overview of the human body’s immune system in graphic
novel style. It allows readers to really visualize what is going on in the body, explaining the important
concepts and elements in a way that entertains as well as informs. White blood cells, the body’s organs,
bacteria, and viruses all become characters, and tell readers directly what they are doing to, for
example, cause infection or fight it. In such a story form, kids may be able to process the information
better and understand it in a way that helps them remember it easily. Readers will gain knowledge of
how germs (harmful bacteria and viruses) cause infection in the body, how white blood cells fight
infection, the difference between bacteria and viruses, and ways we as individuals can prevent
infections (washing hands, shielding one’s sneezes, eating healthily, and exercising regularly). Kid
readers will enjoy the elements of humor presented within the cartoons. When explaining that a runny
nose is part of the body’s immune response, a running nose is shown chasing a pair of lips, which says,
“It’s SNOT funny!” A sneeze is shown to release alien-looking microbes, who exclaim “YA-HOO!” and
“WHEEE!” as they make their way into another child’s mouth and nose. The white blood cells are
presented as real superheroes, sending out antibodies to “patrol” the body, always on alert, and ready
to combat harmful invaders at a moment’s notice. Fighting Sickness is one volume in a set of eight books
which present the different organ systems of the body; all are available to check out from our library
system.
