Jack H. Simon is Professor of Radiology and Neurology, Oregon Health & Sciences University, Adjunct Scientist at Oregon’s Advanced Imaging Research Center, and Neuroradiologist, PVAMC. Dr. Simon has an MD and Ph.D. (Molecular Biology) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He trained in Radiology at the University of Colorado and then Neuroradiology as a fellow at the University of Rochester, where he remained as faculty from 19841989. Dr. Simon returned to Colorado in 1989 as Director of MRI and then Neuroradiology, and Director of the Colorado Brain Imaging Laboratory (BIRL). Prior to moving to Portland, Dr. Simon was Professor of Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, and Vice Chair, Research, Department of Radiology, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Simon and the Brain Imaging Research Laboratory (re-titled as the Oregon BIRL; O’BIRL) moved from Colorado to Portland in 2006. From 2006-2012, Dr. Simon was Chief, Imaging, PVAMC, and Lead Radiologist VISN 20 to 2012. O’BIRL lives in the Portland VA Research Foundation as the site of multiple sclerosis (MS) and traumatic brain injury imaging research. Dr. Simon has been involved in MS imaging research and clinical trial design and analysis for more than 25 years, including the original interferon beta-1a and CHAMPS MS Prevention Trial. He is the author of more than 150 papers, books and chapters. His research interests have included the areas of MR pulse sequences, including lipid suppression methodology, and MS studies focused on brain atrophy, axonal degeneration and the pathology of earliest MS. Dr. Simon is on the Editorial Board of Multiple Sclerosis, and has recently served as charter member of the Clinical Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumor Study section, NIH, subcommittee member of NINDS’s Common Data Elements for MS initiative, NIH ‘s Translational/Clinical Sciences Editorial Board, and is currently a member of the International Panel on Neuromyelitis Optica Diagnosis and the National MS Society’s Clinical/Translational Review Committee. In his spare time, Dr. Simon is co-editing a book with Massimo Filiippi on Imaging Acute Neurologic Disease-A Symptom Based Approach.
