Subject: V Foundation Translational Research Award
Below please see the announcement re Translational Research Awards that was sent by the V
Foundation for Cancer Research to Dr. Platanias. If you would like to be nominated by the
Cancer Center to apply for a Translational Research Award, kindly e-mail your biosketch and a
one-page abstract of your proposal to Benette Phillips, [email protected], by
Wednesday, Feb. 10. If you are selected to submit an application, Dr. Platanias will submit
your name to the V Foundation, and the Foundation will then provide you with instructions for
submitting an application.
Please note that the V Foundation is particularly interested in funding proposals that 1) address
the biological basis of cancer disparities or that 2) focus on cancers that are more prevalent or
aggressive in certain ethnic or racial groups (lung, CRC, breast, prostate, uterine, cervical,
stomach, liver).
Dear Dr. Platanias:
I am pleased to issue this invitation to your institution to participate in The V Foundation for Cancer
Research 2016 Translational Research Award application cycle. The Translational Research Award is a
$600,000 grant awarded in three annual installments of $200,000.
Announcement:
You are invited to submit two nominees from your research institution for consideration for the
Translational Award, if at least one of the two nominee applicants is submitting a research project that
focuses on the biological basis of cancer disparities experienced by patients from minority ethnic or
racial populations in cancer causes, aggressiveness, treatment or relapse. Minorities for the purposes of
this application are defined as African Americans or people of African descent, Asian Americana and
Pacific Islanders and people of Asian descent, Hispanic Americans, Hispanics or Latino/Latina persons
and Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.
Special Focus area: As in previous years, any area of cancer research is permitted. However, research on
cancers that are more prevalent or aggressive in specific ethnic populations is encouraged, but not
required. Cancers in which ethnic and racial disparities have previously been shown include: lung and
bronchus, colon and rectum, breast, prostate, uterine, cervix, stomach and liver.
Definition of a translational research project: Translational projects should move a novel strategy from
the laboratory into a human clinical trial or use specimens from a clinical trial to develop biomarkers or
mechanisms. The research should apply in some direct way to human beings. If biomarker research is
undertaken, a validation set is essential. A plan for biomarker validation, if applicable, must be included
in any proposal. The endpoint of the project should be the planning or initiation of a new clinical trial.
Applicant Eligibility: All nominated applicants who will lead the Translational Award research team must
meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to submit an application:
• The nominee must be nominated by their Cancer Center Director if the research institution is a
cancer center.
• By the Due Date of the Application, applicants who will lead this research team must have all
the following:
o Be senior scientists who hold a tenure-track faculty position at their cancer research
institution. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty
positions are not eligible for Principal Investigator nomination to lead the Translational
Research Team.
o Applicants must be either US Citizens or be a permanent legal resident in the US.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Nomination Due Date: by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on Friday, February 26, 2016.
Translational Research Award Application Due Date: by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday, March 29,
2016.
