INTERMARK PARTNERS STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT, LLC FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 26, 2013 Contact: Mindy Ford Well Done Marketing 317-696-0949 [email protected] CARMEL COMPANY WINS NATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD CARMEL, IN: Intermark Partners Strategic Management, LLC, a Carmel-based biotech firm, has received a Patent for Humanity Award from the United States Department of Commerce, Patent and Trademark Division, for its innovative Nutra-Iso™ technology that is already benefiting thousands of chronically malnourished children in Latin America. The award, presented on April 11, 2013, honors Intermark Partners for developing technology that isolates, extracts, and concentrates rice bran derivatives into nutritional supplements that can help alleviate chronic malnutrition. “As a global leader, the United States has a responsibility to take the initiative on humanitarian issues,” said U. S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) at the award ceremony. “Programs like Patents for Humanity highlight how we can create incentives for researchers and businesses to use American innovation to address global humanitarian needs. I am pleased to reintroduce legislation to further strengthen this program, and I congratulate the award winners today.” The title of the winning patent is “Nutritionally Enhanced Isolate from Rice Bran and Method of Production.” Intermark Partners principal Dr. Glenn Sullivan was the lead scientist in this development and accepted the award for the team. “This award is very gratifying for us,” Sullivan said. “We hope it brings more attention to this process that’s already having a great effect on improving the nutrition of mothers and children in developing countries where malnourishment has been a problem for decades.” Patents for Humanity is the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)’s voluntary pilot program to recognize patent owners who apply their patented technology to address humanitarian needs. The program advances the president’s global development agenda by rewarding companies that bring life-saving technologies to underserved people of the world, while showing how patents are an integral part of tackling the world’s challenges. INTERMARK PARTNERS STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT, LLC According to the USPTO, “Rice bran, a by-product of rice milling process worldwide is high in many essential nutrients, but not suitable in its raw form for human consumption. “Intermark developed a process to extract edible nutrition from rice bran that is high in antioxidants, nutrients, digestible protein, amino acids, and carbohydrates. This technology makes available nearly 40 million tons of rice bran each year to reduce malnutrition in developing countries.” The Intermark technology has been licensed to two other local companies— Sustainable Nutrition International, a 501(c)3 Charitable Organization which develops nutrient-rich rice bran formulations for North and Central America, with primary focus on Central American countries where chronic malnutrition is most pronounced; and Diabco Life Sciences, which formulates and sells Diabatrol®, a Type 2 diabetes management product. Winners will receive a certificate for accelerated processing of select patent USPTO matters. The program creates a powerful tool for businesses to expedite handling of their most important matters and help validate technology in the market—leading to quicker and more efficient investment decisions. Other 2013 award winners include the University of California Berkeley, Dupont Pioneer, Procter & Gamble, and Microsoft Corporation. ###
