Lifeline cultures are not hazardous as defined by OSHA 1910.1200. However, as live cells they are
potential biohazards.

SECTION 2 – COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON COMPONENTS
Liquid Cell Culture: Either frozen or growing cells shipped in liquid cell culture medium (a mixture of
components that may include, but is not limited to: inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids, carbohydrates and
other nutrients dissolved in water).

SECTION 3 – HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Hazardous Ingredients: Frozen cultures may contain up to 10% Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO.) This cell line
has been screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV-1 and other adventitious agents.
Potential Health Effects:
Eye: May cause irritation of the eye.
Skin: May cause skin irritation.
Inhalation: May be irritating to mucus membranes and upper respiratory tract.
Ingestion: May cause irritation if swallowed.
SECTION 4 – FIRST AID MEASURES
Oral Exposure: If swallowed, rinse out mouth with water provided person is conscious. Call a physician.

Dermal Exposure: In case of contact with skin, flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.
If irritation continues, call a physician.
Eye Exposure: In case of contact with eyes, flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.
Assure adequate flushing by separating the eyelids with fingers. If irritation continues, call a physician.
Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, call a physician.
SECTION 5 – FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Materials: Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Wear self contained
breathing apparatus for fire fighting if necessary.
SECTION 6 – ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Methods for Cleaning Up: Contain the spill and decontaminate using suitable disinfectants such as chlorine
bleach or 70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. Wear chemical goggles, rubber boots, and rubber gloves.
SECTION 7 – HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling: Avoid inhalation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid prolonged or repeated
exposure. This cell line is of human origin and requires handling at Biosafety Level 2 containment [U.S.
Government Publication Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (CDC, 1999)]. Cell
lines may fall under regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030 Bloodborne Pathogens. Use universal precautions when
handling this product.
Further recommendations: Lifeline recommends that appropriate safety procedures be used when handling
all cell lines, especially those derived from human material. Detailed discussions of laboratory safety
procedures are provided in Laboratory Safety: Principles and Practice (Fleming, et al., 1995), the Journal
of Tissue Culture Methods (Caputo, 1988), and in the U.S. Government Publication, Biosafety in
Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (CDC, 1999). This publication is available in its entirety in

Storage: Keep container tightly closed. Store below -135°C. Protect from light.
SECTION 8 – EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Controls: Safety shower and eye wash stations are required. Use of Certified Biological Safety
Cabinet is recommended.
Ventilation: Area ventilation is generally adequate.
Personal Protective Equipment:

Eye: Safety glasses or goggles required.
General Hygiene Measures: Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
SECTION 9 – PHYSICAL / CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Appearance: Colored liquid, color may vary with pH.
SECTION 10 – STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Stability: Stable. Hazardous polymerization will not occur.
SECTION 11 – TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Primary Irritant Effect: This product is a potential irritant to eyes and skin. This product may be harmful if
ingested or inhaled. This cell line has been screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV-1 and other
adventitious agents. Cell lines may fall under regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030 Bloodborne Pathogens. Complete
toxicological properties have yet to be determined.

SECTION 13 – DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
Appropriate Method of Disposal: Dispose of cultures and exposed materials by autoclaving at 121°C for 20
minutes or exposing to 10% chlorine bleach for at least 10 minutes. Follow all Federal, State and local
regulations.
