All apo B-containing lipoproteins have a structure similar to that shown for very low density lipoproteins (VLDL). The core is composed of triglyceride and cholesteryl ester, whereas the monolayer surface is composed of phospholipid, unesterified cholesterol, and protein in the form of apolipoproteins. VLDL contains apolipoproteins B-100, C-I, C-II, and E. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which transports most of the cholesterol found in blood, contains primarily apo B-100. VIRUS FILAMENTOSO DE E. coli Fd is a virus that infects certain strains of Escherichia Coli bacteria. It is not dangerous to people. The virus is about 880 nm in length and 6.6 nm in diameter. The protein shell has a hollow core in the center into which the DNA is stuffed. The virus is semiflexible, the persistence length is 2.2 microns. There are specialized proteins at the ends of the virus used for infection. VIRUS Viruses are not plants, animals, or bacteria, but they are the quintessential parasites of the living kingdoms. Although they may seem like living organisms because of their prodigious reproductive abilities, viruses are not living organisms in the strict sense of the word. With permission from Terradot et al. (2001; Academic Press Inc.). (A) Surface (left) or section (right) views. Monomer units are in light green, dark green or blue. Epitope 5 (residues 83–89) is shown in red, epitope 120 (residues 172-178) is shown in yellow. (B) Surfaces coloured according to the properties of the constituent amino acids: D, E-magenta; R, H, K-blue; A, V, L, I, P, M, F, W-orange; G, S, T, C, N, Q, Y-green. The acidic patch on the trimer surface is circled. The basic viral particle or single virus is called a virion. This virion consists of a nucleic acid genome (where the virus’s heredity information is stored), surrounded by a protective shell of protein called a capsid (or lipid envelope). Entry of HIV into a host cell is also thought to involve a co-receptor on the cell surface, either CCR5 or CXCR4, which typically function as receptors of chemokines. The HIV virus envelope is a derivative of the plasma membrane of a host cell, obtained via budding. When HIV attempts to enter a cell, interactions between cell surface molecules and viral envelope proteins allow the envelope to fuse with the cell membrane. The envelope protein called gp41 is known to play an important role in this process.
