Intensive: Anti-Candida Cleanse Class by Summer Bock Since Candida is often caused by antibiotic overuse, there is direct correlation to the gut health and getting rid of Candida. It is often an underlying cause of chronic fatigue and many other seemingly unrelated health concerns. This class is designed to navigate through the various cleanses, solutions, and information overload when it comes to treating Candida. You will learn more about healing diets to control Candida, how the gut bacteria play a role in healing, and why some people can use fermented foods to kill it and others need tremendously strict dietary solutions. You will also learn about allopathic approaches as well as alternative. Knowledge is power. That is why you are here. To become more powerful in your daily decisions to create a thriving body and unstoppable life. I want to share my personal story with Candida. Before I even knew what this was, I was struggling with symptoms of Candida. Once I discovered in Donna Gate’s book, the Body Ecology Diet, that my symptoms were all connected to this yeast, I was forever changed. The allergies, the stomach problems, and the countless times I took antibiotics growing up. When my health crisis reached its pinnacle, I was having panic attacks, was allergic to my cat, MCS, rashes, hives, skin problems, digestive distress. This is something I have struggled with for a long time. I still have to be careful when it comes to Candida. I can eat cupcakes and ice cream now, but if I eat too much for too many days in a row, I notice it. My skin gets a little itchy and my immune system gets weaker. Sometimes I go for long periods without any sugar at all. Those are the times when I still feel the best. I feel amazing, spiritual, and happy from the core. And I know that all of this has to do with Candida and it’s toxic effects on my moods, mental state, and spiritual connection. I used herbal therapies, fermented foods, and low microbe diets to heal my body of Candida. Candida Fun Facts • • • • • • • Candida has two life forms: The yeast form and the hyphal form (fungal phase) Candida produces “mycotoxins” or fungal toxins that are harmful for human tissues. It is the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide! It is a wine spoiler, which causes batches of wine to go bad. Antibiotics promote Candida infections. Men can get genital yeast infections caused by Candida just like women can. Candida albicans cannot ferment lactose unlike any of the other Candida species. What is Candida? • Candida is a yeast that normally lives in and on the body of humans (and other animals, insects) but that grows out of control when the immune system gets hampered. Where does Candida come from? • What ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ causes Candida Antibiotics Processed Food Stress Antacids Antihyperacidity meds Birth Control Hormones Mercury toxicity Low Immune Function (usually caused by dysbiosis or infection) Steroids (anti-inflammatory drugs) Nutrient Imbalance/Deficiency • Symptoms of Candida: 1. Skin and nail fungal infections (such as athlete’s foot or toenail fungus) 2. Feeling tired and worn down or suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia 3. Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea 4. Autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis 5. Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus, ADD, ADHD and brain fog 6. Skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, hives, and rashes 7. Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression 8. Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, rectal itching, or vaginal itching 9. Severe seasonal allergies, itchy ears, or fluid filled ears 10. Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings 11. Hypoglycemia 12. Endometriosis 13. Vision issues 14. Low or nonexistent sex drive (low energy becuase body is in survival mode) Summer Bock – Thriving Body + Unstoppable Life | INTENSIVE: Anti-Candida 01.13.2015 © 2006-2015 Summer Bock all rights reserved | www.SummerBock.com 2 • Immunity and its connection to Candida. ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ There is a strong connection between antibiotic use and processed foods as a connection to Candida, which is linked to “ allergic airway disease” which is an unhealthy immune response. http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/ 73451/j.1365-2222.2005.02379.x.pdf?sequence=1 Perturbations in the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota composition that occur as a result of antibiotics and diet in ‘westernized’ countries are strongly associated with allergies and asthma (‘hygiene hypothesis’). The microbiota (‘microflora’) plays a crucial role in the development of mucosal tolerance, including the airways. Significant attention has been focused on the role of the microbiota in GI development, immune adaptation and initiation of GI inflammatory diseases. This review covers the post-developmental functions that the microbiota plays in regulating immunological tolerance to allergen exposure outside the GI tract and proposes the question: is the microbiota a major regulator of the immune system?http://www.8853.co.kr/data/Board/shopboard_5/64cc6ac468a22648 2dfa4cfbbf7e3756_16_.pdf "The pathogenesis of candidiasis involves invasion of host tissues by filamentous forms of the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans” This means that Candida becomes an invader by growing microscopic roots that imbed themselves deeply into the human tissues. This is Candida’s fungal phase. http://www.sciencemag.org/content/283/5407/1535 Adhesion of Candida albicans to host cells is an essential first step in the infection process for colonization and subsequent induction of mucosal disease.” (from wikipedia) This means that Candida must first attach itself to the epithelial cells or the walls of the intestines. worth reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hwp1 ▪ HWP1 (hyphen wall protein) lets Candida albicans attach in a way no other Candida can. It attaches to translutaminases…enzymes which are essential in attaching tissues. ▪ As you can see the molecular gastronomists are psyched about it. They call it ‘meat glue': http://www.modernistpantry.com/transglutaminase.html ▪ This ‘meat glue’ is what modifies and starts to break down gliadin (essentially ‘gluten’), which then starts to react with the small-intestine tissue and causes an inflammatory reaction. This is hypothesized to be the connection between celiac and Candida. ▪ This same enzyme that ‘glues meat’ together is the one that allows Candida to stick to the esophagus, vaginal walls, intestines, tongue, and mouth tissues causing yeast infections of the mucous membranes. http://www.jbc.org/content/279/39/40737.full Summer Bock – Thriving Body + Unstoppable Life | INTENSIVE: Anti-Candida 01.13.2015 © 2006-2015 Summer Bock all rights reserved | www.SummerBock.com 3 • Diseases and disorders associated with ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ • Celiac http://n.b5z.net/i/u/10124624/f/Candida_Albicans_and_Coeliac.pdf Asthma Allergic Airway Disease Autism http://www.gaps.me/preview/?page_id=20 Gastrointestinal disease Allergies Eczema Schizophrenia Dyslexia ADD/ADHD Bipolar OCD Eating Disorders Candida produces “mycotoxins” or fungal toxins that are harmful for human tissues. The breakdown of alcohol into acetaldehyde by Candida is the most damaging. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride outlines the damage caused by acetaldehyde. ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Acetaldehyde is considered to be the most toxic of alcohol by-products. It is the chemical, which gives us the feeling of hangover. Anybody who experienced a hangover would tell you how dreadful he or she felt. Children, who acquire abnormal gut flora with a lot of yeast from the start, may never know any other feeling. Acetaldehyde has a large variety of toxic influences on the body. One of the most devastating influences of this chemical is its ability to alter the structure of proteins. Acetaldehyde – altered proteins are thought to be responsible for many autoimmune reactions. Children and adults with neuro-psychiatric problems are commonly found to have antibodies against their own tissues. Liver damage with reduced ability to detoxify drugs, pollutants and other toxins. Pancreas degeneration with reduced ability to produce pancreatic enzymes, which would impair digestion. Reduced ability of the stomach wall to produce stomach acid. Damage to immune system. Brain damage with lack of self-control, impaired co-ordination, impaired speech development, aggression, mental retardation, loss of memory and stupor. Peripheral nerve damage with altered senses and muscle weakness. Direct muscle tissue damage with altered ability to contract and relax and muscle weakness. Nutritional deficiencies from damaging effect on digestion and absorption of most vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Deficiencies in B and A vitamins are particularly common. Alcohol has an ability to enhance toxicity of most common drugs, pollutants and other toxins. Alteration of metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids in the body. Inability of the liver to dispose of old neurotransmitters, hormones and other by-products of normal metabolism. As a result these substances accumulate in the body, causing behavioural abnormalities and many other problems. Get the right bacteria in your gut by eating high-quality foods, anti-Candida foods, and probiotic-rich foods. ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Benefits of having the right bacteria in the gut ▪ "Short chain fatty acids (butyric acid), the product of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), inhibited germination.” When you have a healthy community of bacteria growing in the gut, you have tons of SCFAs being excreted. In fact, a significant portion of the energy bacteria produce in the gut is in the form of butyric acid. "Fatty acid metabolites and fatty acid pathways can up-regulate and downregulate germination in C. albicans.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/epmc/articles/PMC523025/ ▪ In particular, we observed a decrease in H2O2-producing species (L. acidophilus, L. gasseri, and L. vaginalis) and an increase of non-H2O2producing L. iners. This finding suggests some hypotheses regarding the role of lactobacilli in protecting women from Candida infection: (i) women with a vaginal flora dominated by H2O2-producing Lactobacillus species have a minor risk to contract CA; (ii) H2O2, rather than other metabolites produced by lactobacilli, such as lactic acid, could be responsible for the control of Candida overgrowth (33).http://aem.asm.org/content/73/18/5731.full ▪ Fermented foods use the anti fungal properties of lactic acid bacteria as a natural, nontoxic biopreservative. "Food-borne fungi, both yeasts and moulds, cause serious spoilage of stored food. Moulds may also produce health-damaging mycotoxins, e.g.aflatoxins, trichothecenes, fumonisin, ochratoxin A and patulin. Consumer demands for minimally processed foods and reduced use of chemical preservatives have stimulated research on antifungal lactic acid bacteria as biopreservatives. Recently, a number of antifungal metabolites, e.g.cyclic dipeptides, phenyllactic acid, proteinaceous compounds, and 3-hydroxylated fatty acids have been isolated from lactic acid bacteria. This review summarizes these findings and suggests potential applications of antifungal lactic acid bacteria in the preservation of food and feeds.” Trends in Food Science & Technology Volume 16, Issues 1–3, January–March 2005, Pages 70–78 Second International Symposium on Sourdough - From Fundamentals to Applications Johan Schnürer, , Jesper Magnusson The Body Ecology Diet The GA/PS Diet The Gut Rebuilding Program ▪ Foods to avoid (This is covered in detail in The Gut Rebuilding Program and can be easily accomplished in the Probiotic Power Cleanse for a shorter and faster result. ▪ SUGARS ▪ ALCOHOL ▪ STARCHES, GRAINS & GLUTEN ▪ FRUIT ▪ STARCHY VEGEABLES ▪ PROCESSED, CURED, & PRESERVATIVE-FILLED MEATS ▪ SHELLFISH & FISH WITH HEAVY METALS ▪ DAIRY Summer Bock – Thriving Body + Unstoppable Life | INTENSIVE: Anti-Candida 01.13.2015 © 2006-2015 Summer Bock all rights reserved | www.SummerBock.com 7 ▪ ▪ ◦ ▪ CAFFEINE ▪ NUTS WITH MOLDS ▪ MUSHROOMS ▪ VINEGAR ▪ PROCESSED OILS ▪ CONDIMENTS ▪ FERMENTED FOODS Foods to Eat - abridged version (Some people will need to eliminate all grains and fermented foods and sometimes meat in order to heal from Candida.) ▪ NON-STARCHY VEGETABLES ▪ greens, cucumber, the list is long... ▪ LIVE CULTURED FOODS ▪ sauerkraut ▪ kefir (homemade) ▪ MEAT (High Quality) ▪ FISH ▪ sardines ▪ wild caught salmon ▪ NUTS & SEEDS ▪ GLUTEN-FREE GRAINS ▪ buckwheat, amaranth, teff, millet, quinoa ▪ HIGH QUALITY OILS ▪ Coconut, olive, sesame, & flax ▪ Panaseeda oil http://www.summerbock.com/guts-andglory1-ian-clark/ ▪ SPICES ▪ HERBAL TEAS ▪ SWEETENERS ▪ xylitol ▪ stevia Low Microbe Diets to help reduce overall dysbiosis and help get rid of Candida. ▪ Gabriel Cousens outlines in his book Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine, an entire diet based off of eating foods that have low microbial activity. They are breaking down and the system gets flooded with a lot of toxic byproducts. Some of the die-off can exacerbate symptoms even more because the Candida is trying to make a last effort to get you to want sugar, the food they need to stay alive. People will deal with major sugar cravings during die-off. They might feel horrible during this time as well. Summer Bock – Thriving Body + Unstoppable Life | INTENSIVE: Anti-Candida 01.13.2015 © 2006-2015 Summer Bock all rights reserved | www.SummerBock.com 8 ▪ Die-off can even show up as dandruff and excessive skin excretions. It can include diarrhea and a lot of mucus coming out of the body. I've also seen people experience night sweats from going through these healing diets and part of the detox process. Some other symptoms of die-off are wakelessness, insomnia, and irritability. For some people it means major brain fog. This is again why I recommend doing the Gut Rebuilding first because it gives the body a chance to adjust before doing something more extreme.
