Announcement - Job Positions in a Marie-Curie Initial Training Network
Molecular Mechanisms of Fungal Pathogen-Host Interactions
11 PhD (ESR for 36 months) & 3 Postdoctoral Positions (ER for 24 months)
ImResFun will study fungal infectious diseases caused by the most common human fungal pathogens, the opportunistic Candida species. The key
objectives of ImResFun include (i) to understand how epithelia, immune cells and
infected organs respond to invasion by Candida spp, (ii) to decipher host-defense
mechanisms mediating pathogen elimination, and (iii) to identify genetic networks
driving the dynamics of host-pathogen interactions. To improve diagnosis and
identify novel biomarkers of invasive fungal infections, ImResFun will focus on
basic mechanisms of pathogenesis and host immunity. Importantly, ImResFun
provides the framework to directly translate experimental results into clinical
practice by identifying potential targets for antifungal drug discovery. The training
and research program of ImResFun cover molecular mechanisms of hostpathogen interactions using infection models, clinical samples from patients with
age-related infections, chemical biology and antifungal target development, as
well as bioinformatics and genome-wide data analysis.
ImResFun partner groups comprise SMEs, RTOs, Hospitals and Universities. Research groups offering PhD (ESR) and/or PostDoc (ER) positions
include Karl Kuchler (Vienna), Steffen Rupp (Stuttgart), Per Ljungdahl (Stockholm), Uwe Gross (Göttingen), Julian Naglik (London), Hana
Sychrová (Prague), Renate Spohn (Tübingen), Concha Gil (Madrid), Attila Gácser (Szeged), Toni Gabaldón (Barcelona), Thomas Lion
(Vienna) and Leif Schauser (Aarhus). A brief description of the main research interests and potential ESR/ER projects at each partner group is
available at the website www.imresfun.org
All applicants must verify eligibility (www.imresfun.org) before applying. They have to demonstrate a strong motivation to engage in the network.
Previous research experience in fungal pathogenesis or infection immunobiology is desired but not essential. Applications (subject heading
“Application for ImResFun Position”) should be e-mailed to both [email protected] and to the desired partner group by August 15, 2013.
Electronic applications must include the following documents in a single PDF file:
1. Academic Curriculum Vitae of no more than 2 pages
2. List of peer-reviewed publications (NO posters, abstracts or papers in preparation; submitted papers must include the submission confirmation)
3. A 1-page motivation letter explaining why you wish to start / continue a career in the field, and in which ImResFun group you intend to work
4. A 1-page review / sketch on a key unsolved questions concerning host-pathogen interplays as perceived by the applicant (incl. 2-3 key refs)
Finally, two (2) reference letters must be e-mailed by mentors of applicants before the deadline DIRECTLY to [email protected]
Additional details will be posted on the website www.imresfun.org (basic version online beginning of August). Short-listed ESR/ER candidates will
be invited for SKYPE or personal interviews in October 2013. Most positions are expected to start between December 2013 – February 2014.
