Measuring the clients’ health and well-being in residential treatment (Therapeutic
Community) is important for providing appropriate health-related support and
monitoring heath. The Short Form 36 (SF-36) Health Status Questionnaire is one of the
most widely used generic measures of self-perceived health status.
The purpose of this paperis to investigate the health related quality of life of drug users
receiving treatment in (Drug free) therapeutic program, using the “SF-36 Health Survey”
questionnaire.
The research was carried out in December 2009, in the facilities of KETHEA-EXODOS
and concerned the total of clients. In total 130 questionnaires were handled out. The
questionnaires were given as self-reported with the presence of the researcher. The
results that appear from the questionnaires of SF-36 Health Survey were connected
with elements that were drawn from two questionnaires, the FTDI and EuropASI, which
are supplemented during their entry in the treatment. The parameters that were
evaluated concerned demographic characteristics, the inject drug use, the duration of
drug use, clues for the existence of bodily, mental and familial problems and the
duration of staying in treatment.
The clients showed worse life quality (in 6 from the 8 scales of SF-36) than the general
population. The longer duration of staying in the treatment is significantly associated
with improvement in the scales of Emotional Well Being, Mental Health and marginal
the General Health. Other important discoveries we consider: a) the existence of bodily
problems of health influences statistically considerably the Scale of General Health, b)
the familial problems influences statistically considerably the scale of Social Functioning
and c) the duration of inject drug use (when this exceeds the two years) influences
statistically considerably the Scale of General Health of patients in this sample.
The clients, dependent on heroin, who participate in a drug free therapeutic program
even if they remain the general population in health related quality of life, have the
possibility of improving up to a significant degree during their stay in the therapeutic
program. It is memorable that this improvement concerns the most problematic
dimensions of health for those who were dependent on drugs.
