Duphaston (Dydrogesterone) for the treatment of endometriosis Duphaston is made by Solvay Healthcare Limited. What is Duphaston? Duphaston is a synthetic (artificial) progestogen and is similar to the progesterone produced naturally by the ovaries. Duphaston can also be used in the treatment of: Abnormal uterine bleeding Pre-Menstrual Syndrome Infertility Threatened miscarriage Painful periods Absence of periods How Duphaston works: The precise action of Duphaston is not fully understood, so is difficult to explain. Duphaston reduces the normal build-up of the uterus lining by oestrogen during the monthly cycle. This action also stops the build-up of endometriosis in other sites. Administration and dosage of Duphaston: Reaction of Duphaston with food/alcohol/drugs: Duphaston comes in tablet form in a strength of 10mgs and is taken one, two or three times daily from day five to day twenty-five of the cycle. None have been reported. In some circumstances, especially in the treatment of endometriosis, the treatment is taken continuously, and may be given at higher doses. Side effects of Duphaston: Treatment is usually for six to twelve months. Duphaston is not suitable for the treatment of children. It may be used in older women as a form of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy). When Duphaston should not be used (contra-indications): There are no reported contra-indications for Duphaston. Precautions in the use of Duphaston: There are no reported risks to pregnancy. Duphaston is used to prevent threatened abortion. There have been no reported adverse experiences for lactating (breast-feeding) women. Nausea Breast tenderness Headache Bloating Dizziness Skin rashes Breakthrough bleeding between periods may occur. This can usually be corrected by increasing the dose. As with all treatments, you may have no side effects at all, or you may experience a few but it is rare to experience multiple side effects. Do remember to report any side effects to your medical practitioner and ask for advice.
