Pregnancy
Category B: Metronidazole, Erythromycin- Regular Dose
Cat B: “Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no
adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.”
Note: Prucalopride- European info is analogous to US Category B
Safe for pregnancy: Allimed, Low Dose Naltrexone aka LDN, Iberogast (Otillinger),
Ginger (up to 2,000mg- Thompson)
Category C: Rifaximin, Neomycin
Cat C: “Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate
and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant
women despite potential risks.”
Not recommended: Motil Pro (Label - “not to be taken by pregnant or lactating women”)
Lactation
Not Secreted in Milk: Rifaximin, Neomycin (clinically insignificant amount in milk), Low Dose Erythromycin
Prucalopride: no anticipated effects, lack of human data
OK: Allimed, Iberogast, Ginger. At 8 months- Berberine, Oregano.
Secreted In Milk: Metronidazole
Not Recommended: Motil Pro (Label - “not to be taken by pregnant or lactating women”)
Pediatric Use
Rifaximin: 10-30mg/kg x 7-14 days (30mg showed better results), or 200mg 3xday
Neomycin: 250mg 2xd x14 days
Metronidazole: 30 to 50 mg/kg/day orally in 3 divided doses, Maximum dose: 2.25 g/day (we haven’t used it)
Allimed, Neem, Biocidin, Goldenseal – ½ adult dose (or ¼ if very young/low weight)
Prucalopride: 0.01mg/kg, >50kg= adult dose of 0.5mg
Low Dose Erythromycin: 25mg/night
Iberogast: 1-30 drops/night
Unknown: Motil Pro
