CuracaoandBonairearegroupedwiththeLeewardIslandslocatedoffthenorthcoastofVenezuelaintheCarribeanSea.They,andtheWindward
islands:SintMaarten,Saba,andSt.EustatiuswhichlieeastoftheUSVirginIslands,formtheNetherlandsAntillesajurisdictionoftheKingdomofthe
Netherlands.FifteenmilesoffthecoastofCuraçao,tothesoutheast,liesthesmall,uninhabitedislandofKleinCuraçao("LittleCuraçao").

History:
TheoriginalinhabitantsofCuraçao,theArawakAmerindians,weredecimatedbytheSpanish.TheislandwasnextoccupiedbytheDutchin1634.
TheDutchWestIndiaCompanyfoundedthecapitalofWillemstadandmadeCuraçaoacenterforslavetradeuntilitsabolishmentin1863.Its
prosperitywasrestoredintheearly20thcenturywiththeconstructionofoilrefineriestoservicethenewlydiscoveredVenezuelanoilfields.
