MODEL 2G660 SERIES IRM PULSE MAGNETIZER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The 2G 660 Pulse Magnetizer is a simple, compact, inexpensive tool for magnetizing samples in low or high fields. It operates by charging capacitators with a low current, then sending a high current through a solenoid to generate a pulsed magnetic field. It contains a low-range circuit for generating fields up to 3,000 gauss and a high-range circuit for generating fields from 3,000 to 27,000 gauss. The manual controls consist of a power on-off switch, a high range-low range switch, thumb wheels for dialing in the desired field, and a cycle start button. An LED display tracks the buildup of charge in the capacitors. When the charge reaches the desired value, the instrument generates the pulsed field automatically. In the interest of safety, the control circuits have been isolated from the high-voltage circuits, and the instrument has been encased in a non-conductive fiberglass container. FEATURES Generates magnetic fields from zero to 27 kilogauss in a 1-millisecond pulse Magnetizes standard geophysical samples or other samples in a solenoid 3.8 cm ID x 10 cm L Plugs into a standard 115-volt outlet (220V set-up optional) Engineered to ensure operator safety Easy to operate with manual controls Optional RS232 interface enables automatic operation from a computer Compatible with superconducting rock magnetometers, sample handlers, and degaussers manufactured by 2G Enterprises for automated sequential testing of magnetization in various applied fields APPLICATIONS Magnetization of paleomagnetic specimens Magnetization of parts, components, and magnetic materials Field Intensity: Zero to 3,000 gauss with the low-range circuit 3,000 to 27,000 gauss with the low range circuit Field Duration: 1 millisecond Field Resolution: 1 gauss in the low-range circuit 10 gauss in the high-range circuit Field Accuracy: 1% of field setting or + 3 gauss, whichever is larger Field Uniformity: + 2%over the dimensions of a standard paleomagnetic sample in the center of the solenoid Dimensions: 12" x 24" x 24" Weight: 100 pounds Power Supply Voltage: 115/220 Volts Power: 500 Watts Maximum Interval Voltage: 1500 Volts MODEL 2G670 SERIES IRM PULSE MAGNETIZER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The model 670 IRM system is designed to enable the magnetization of geologic samples by applying a short pulse of magnetic field to the sample ranging in magnitude from a few Gauss to 10kOe. The pulsed magnetic field is created by exciting a long air core solenoid with a high current pulse. The field applying solenoid is made long so that when magnetizing long cores, the entire core is uniformly magnetized with one pulse. The magnetizing pulse width is typically one second long and is created by charging a bank of capacitors and then connecting the capacitors across the field applying coil by using a solid state switch (SCR). The relationship between current pulse magnitude, I, charging capacitance, C, field applying coil inductance, L, and charging voltage, V, can be approximated by the following formula: I = V (C/L)^ 1/2 Typical values of these parameters are: C = 1500 microfarads L=1mH V = 1500 volts These values lead to a current pulse magnitude of I ~ 1800 amps.
