Due to its concept, OTN can handle
nearly all existing communication
standards for voice, data, LAN and
video. The UNIVOICE interface is only
one of the many interfaces presently
available for OTN. For more information,

The UNIVOICE card allows to set up
analog 2- or 4-wire voice connections,
maintaining full feature transparancy. The
card itself does not provide any voice
communication facilities, but onto the
Modules of different types can be
plugged onto one UNIVOICE card.
As the UNIVOICE card can be equipped
with a maximum of 4 plug-on modules,
each of which provides 2 separate
voice circuits, maximum 8 voice
connections are available per card.
The UNIVOICE card contains 8 analog
to PCM (and vice versa) convertors for
impedance matching and leveling.

design improvements are implemented
The UNIVOICE front panel comprises
2 female champ connectors, where
the upper one is reserved for the E&M
signaling connections, if applicable, and
the lower one for all voice connections.
The required -48 V power supply and
ringing generator are available on
the card for the operation of analog
extension sets. Also provided is a
12/16 kHz generator which supplies
metering pulses, if required.
Using the OTN network, distance
limitations between the analog
devices are eliminated.
2LVOI-P and 2LVOI-T modules
The 2LVOI-P and 2LVOI-T modules
establish 2-line telephone connections
between a PBX and an analog
telephone. The 2LVOI-P module
interfaces with the PBX, and the
2LVOI-T interfaces with the telephones.
Each module features 2 voice circuits.
Both are equipped with PCM encoding
and decoding logic, and support DP and
DTMF dialing.
Besides connections between
telephones and PBXs, the
2LVOI-T module also supports direct
connections between telephones, for
hot line applications without a PBX.
2W/4W-EM modules
This module establishes 2- or 4-wire
links with separate E&M signaling
on -48V, to connect equipment with
analog interfaces to the OTN such as
modems, emergency telephones, PA
systems, SCADA (Supervisory Control
And Data Acquisition), radio equipment
and, of course, PBXs. Each circuit can
be configured as 2-wire or 4-wire.
Operation
Applications
UNIVOICE card equipped
with 2LVOI-P/T module(s)
When a 2LVOI-T circuit detects an
off-hook telephone, it signals this to
the corresponding 2LVOI-P circuit,
which closes the loop to the PBX.
The PBX, in turn, will send dial
tone over OTN to the telephone.
The UNIVOICE interface card can be
used in many different applications.
The telephone set can now send the
numbers to the PBX, which will set up
the connection to a directly connected
telephone, to a telephone connected
to OTN or to an outside line.
When a call is set up via OTN, the
2LVOI-P circuit detects the ringing
current from the PBX and signals its
presence to the corresponding 2LVOI-T
circuit, which will regenerate it for the
telephone with the same cadence.
As soon as the telephone goes
off-hook, this is signaled to the
2LVOI-P circuit, which closes the
loop to the PBX. Ringing is stopped
and the call is established.
When a telephone goes on-hook,
this is signaled to the 2LVOI-P,
which opens the loop to the PBX,
and the call is terminated.
UNIVOICE card equipped
with 2W/4W-EM module(s)
The voice part of the circuit contains
a transformer coupled circuit.
The PCM signal is multiplexed in the
OTN frame and sent over the ring.
On the receiving side, the PCM signal
is extracted from the OTN frame,
converted back to an analog signal
and sent to the external equipment.
Two circuits are provided,
each consisting of a voice
part and a signaling part.
The voice part handles balanced
analog signals with frequencies in
the range of 300 to 3400 Hz.
The signaling part detects the closing
of a contact. This information is sent
over the ring on a separate channel.
The circuit receiving this information
activates a solid state relay.
The signaling part offers fully
transparent E&M signaling
capabilities at -48V.
The 2W/4W-EM modules can be used
either in point-to-point applications
or multidrop applications.
UNIVOICE with 2LVOI-P/T module(s)
• Stretched networks
In chemical and petrochemical
plants, railways, metro systems,
airport installations, motorways,
pipelines and other types of
distributed systems, a limited number
of telephones per location have to be
connected to a PBX.
OTN offers a cost effective
solution compared with common
multiplexer equipment, especially if
also the data and LAN capabilities
of the OTN system are used.
• Replacement of key systems
Many larger organizations have
departments in separate buildings.
If the distance to the main PBX
is too large, and the number of
telephones is too small to justify a
local PBX, this is often solved with a
key system, which does not support
full feature transparency. OTN with
its analog voice cards provides a
better alternative in this situation.
Other application fields are Public
Address, emergency telephones,
dial up modems, etc.
emergency telephones play a
vital role and their functioning
must be ensured.
The transparent channels of
the 2W/4W-EM module allow
the connection of emergency
equipment performing constant
tests on the proper functioning
of the emergency telephones.
• PA systems
The 2W/4W-EM module can be used
in a Public Address configuration
with a limited voice quality of 3400
Hz. Such a configuration typically
consists of a PBX from which
the PA messages are initiated,
an OTN system equipped with
4-wire voice cards, amplifiers and
loudspeakers. The voice part of
the 2W/4W-EM module is used to
transmit the speech information.
The signaling part can be used to
turn the remote amplifiers on and off.
Specifications
The 2LVOI-P and 2LVOI-T modules are compatible with
the 12LVOI-P and -T interface cards (FB-52450-A and
FB-52449-A), with the exception of metering. Connections
can be set up between e.g. a 12LVOI-T interface card and
a UNIVOICE card equipped with a 2LVOI-P module.
• Radio modem transmission
The 2W/4W-EM module can be
applied to connect radio base
stations to the radio exchange over
a long distance. This requirement
is often encountered in the railway
environment. The voice part of
the card is used to transmit the
speech information. The signaling
part is used to transmit basic
radio signaling information such
as “ON/OFF”, “squelch”, etc.

• PBX networks
The two most commonly used
ways to connect PBXs are 2 Mbps
links and 4-Wire tie lines. 2 Mbps
links provide high capacity PBX
interconnections. This type of
connection usually offers extensive
signaling capabilities. 4-wire E&M
tie lines are very well suited when
traffic between PBXs is low and
when basic signaling is sufficient.
• Emergency telephones
In many installations (metros,
roads, chemical plants, etc.),
