7D10.10 Geiger Counter and Samples
Abstract
A Geiger counter is a device used to measure ionizing radiation. The Geiger counter contains a Geiger-Müller
tube which is filled with an inert gas at low pressure. A high voltage is placed across the tube so that a current
is induced when the gas is ionized by radiation. The current generates a sound which signifies a count. The
Geiger counter can be used to measure the decays of various different materials and compare it to the background
radiation.

Safety Concerns
As always when working with radioactive material it is best to minimize exposure to radiation. That being
said, the radioactive items used in this demonstration are everyday materials which represent a insignificant health
hazard. None of the radioactive materials should be swallowed.
Equipment
• Geiger Counter
• Box of Common Radioactive Items
1
Procedure
Plug in the Geiger counter and hold the Geiger-Müller tube next to the radioactive samples take measurements.
The range, response time, volume and voltage can be varied using the knobs on the front of the Geiger counter.
