Guide to Using Harris Parts List Information
The Harris Replaceable Parts List Index portrays a tree structure with the major items being leftmost in the index.
The example below shows the Transmitter as the highest item in the tree structure. If you were to look at the bill
of materials table for the Transmitter you would find the Control Cabinet, the PA Cabinet, and the Output
Cabinet. In the Replaceable Parts List Index the Control Cabinet, PA Cabinet, and Output Cabinet show up one
indentation level below the Transmitter and implies that they are used in the Transmitter. The Controller Board is
indented one level below the Control Cabinet so it will show up in the bill of material for the Control Cabinet.
The tree structure of this same index is shown to the right of the table and shows indentation level versus tree
structure level.

The part number of the item is shown to the right of the description as is the page in thePA
manual
whereBoard
the bill for
992 7904 002
that part number starts. Inside the actual tables, four main headings are used:
•
•
•
•
•
Table #-#. ITEM NAME - HARRIS PART NUMBER - this line gives the information that corresponds
to the
Replaceable Parts List Index entry;
HARRIS P/N column gives the ten digit Harris part number (usually in ascending order);
DESCRIPTION column gives a 25 character or less description of the part number;
REF. SYMBOLS/EXPLANATIONS column 1) gives the reference designators for the item (i.e., C001,
R102, etc.) that corresponds to the number found in the schematics (C001 in a bill of material is equivalent to C1 on the schematic) or 2) gives added information or further explanation (i.e., “Used for 208V
operation only,” or “Used for HT 10LS only,” etc.).
Inside the individual tables some standard conventions are used:
•
•
•
A # symbol in front of a component such as #C001 under the REF. SYMBOLS/EXPLANATIONS column means that this item is used on or with C001 and is not the actual part number for C001.
In the ten digit part numbers, if the last three numbers are 000, the item is a part that Harris has purchased and has not manufactured or modified. If the last three numbers are other than 000, the item is
either manufactured by Harris or is purchased from a vendor and modified for use in the Harris product.
The first three digits of the ten digit part number tell which family the part number belongs to - for
example, all electrolytic (can) capacitors will be in the same family (524 xxxx 000). If an electrolytic
(can) capacitor is found to have a 9xx xxxx xxx part number (a number outside of the normal family of
numbers), it has probably been modified in some manner at the Harris factory and will therefore show
up farther down into the individual parts list (because each table is normally sorted in ascending order).
Most Harris made or modified assemblies will have 9xx xxxx xxx numbers associated with them.
The term “SEE HIGHER LEVEL BILL” in the description column implies that the reference designated part
number will show up in a bill that is higher in the tree structure. This is often the case for components
that may be frequency determinant or voltage determinant and are called out in a higher level bill
structure that is more customer dependent than the bill at a lower level.

defined through the touch screen menus. When driven with an Exporter, the outputs can
be configured for FM, HD, FM+HD depending on transmitter configuration.
The input for HD, from the Exporter (possibly through an STL) is 300 kbps Ethernet for
the digital carriers, connected to the "EXPORTER LINK" input. Enter in the Exporter
link IP to match that on the Exporter screen.
The audio inputs for the FM "analog" must be defined on the set-up screens Select the
audio input to correspond with the input provided through your STL link, typically AES
audio.
1.2.2
HDE-100 Exporter
The FlexStar™ HDE-100 Exporter is required for Main Program Services (MPS). A
DexStar Exciter may be repurposed to serve this function but one of the two must be
used. The recommended installation location of the Exporter is at the studio. Studio
installation requires an STL capable of delivering MPS data to the transmitter site.
Examples would be an Intraplex STL or a Mosley Starlink 9003Q with the LAN option.
A method of delivering AES audio for main analog and SCA must also be considered.

Section 1 Introduction/Specifications
FM HD Radio System
The main input is the AES3 audio (32 kHz to 96 kHz) signal for the MPS (main
program service) HD digital program. The Exporter also has an AES3 (32kHz to 96kHz
input and corresponding output for the main FM channel (analog) with a fully
adjustable diversity delay. Another input is the MPS PAD data. Secondary input from
the HDI-100 Importer is only for supplemental program services (SPS). The outputs of
the Exporter are the delayed main channel AES audio and an HD stream of up to 300
kbps (currently this is about 128 kbps) unidirectional UDP Ethernet for the digital
carriers.
1.2.3
HDI-100 Importer
The FlexStar™ HDI-100 Importer is required for any Supplemental Program Services
(SPS). It accepts, manages, encodes and multiplexes all Advanced Application Services
(AAS) including supplemental audio channels and program associated data (PAD) for
transport to the HDE-100 Exporter or to an existing DEXSTAR Exciter. It also manages
system bandwidth allocation.
The Importer is a dedicated server running several programs for this purpose. Do not
use the Importer for other functions as data collisions resulting in audio drop-outs will
result. The Importer will manage the bandwidth allocated for each of the inputs for the
digital carriers. The Importer must be co-located with the Exporter. You will need a
keyboard, monitor and mouse to set up the software applications. The platform is
typically a Pentium 4 PC with windows XP operating system. The Importer works best
when not subject to automatic updates or a continuous connection to the public Internet.
The inputs are AES audio for each SPS channel to be configured. The Importer output
is an Ethernet connection to an Ethernet switch.
1.2.4
STL (Studio Transmitter Link)
The STL is a major component of the system. Its purpose is to transport all audio and
data from the studio to the remote transmitter site. Typically the STL will have
equipment on each end of a link, and the link can be a 900MHz/950MHz RF path
microwave hop, telecom, satellite, direct fiber, etc. Uni-directional systems are
sufficient however bi-directional STL’s are becoming more common.
Whatever system you select, it must have the dual throughput capability of audio and
2nd signal of UDP data at a 300kbps rate (current configurations requite a minimum
128kbps) Ethernet. Future systems will require 300kbps to accommodate additional
services later on without the need to allocate more STL bandwidth. Since the HDx-FM
Exciter audio inputs are configurable you may use AES3, composite or descrete L/R for
the FM ("analog") source.

Section 1 Introduction/Specifications
Glossary
Below are some terms associated with the FlexStar™ HD Radio architecture.
Customer LAN/WAN vs. Dedicated Ethernet - Subnetting and using a router can be
used to keep all non-HD Ethernet traffic away from the FlexStar equipment.
AAS - Advanced Applications Service. Non-program related data services encoded into
the HD bitstream and include Supplemental Audio, traffic information, news, weather,
stock quotes, etc. The first AAS to be implemented in HD receivers will be
Supplemental Audio channels. The HDI-100 receives, manages and multiplexes all
AAS services for HD Radio.
AES3 - Abbreviation for Audio Engineering Society 3-1992 which is the established
standard for professional digital audio, conveying two channels of periodically sampled
and uniformly quantized digital audio on a single twisted pair wire with or without
transformer coupling. The recommended sample rate standard for HD Radio is 44.1
kHz. The abreviation AES/EBU refers to a compatible source or reciever with
transformer coupling.
API - Application Programmers Interface. A set of programming commands used to
manipulate an existing program.
Dual Input Antennas - a low loss method of developing an FMHD hybrid signal. Dual
input antennas utilize two RF inputs, one for FM and a second for the HD transmitter.
They combine the HD and FM signals and each element radiates a hybrid FMHD
signal.
CAT 5/CAT 6 - Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wire that can operate at speeds up to 100
megabits per second/1000 megabits per second. Typically used to make an Ethernet
connection to a device, it is now also being used to transport AES3 audio.
Combiner Port Injector - a low loss method that utilizes the broadband input port of a
constant impedance combiner system to inject the digital signal. Hybrids are then
utilized to combine the FM and HD signals and the resulting hybrid signal is then fed to
the antenna elements.
Common Amplification - Also referred to as Low Level Combining. Common
amplification utilizes a single transmitter and it’s associated IPA and PA stages to
amplify a hybrid HD+FM signal that has already been combined with the proper power
ratios at the exciter stage.
EOC - Ensemble Operations Center. The functional capabilities to manage the
transmission, configuration and status of all AAS inputs. See "1.3.1 Ensemble
Operations Center Description" on page 1-5 for further information.

NOTE:
The HDE-100 Exporter will merge the MPS Audio into the HD stream coming
from the HDI-100 Importer. This HD stream may contain one or more SPS audio
programs, and could also include any MPS PAD, SPS PAD, or AAS data.
High Level Combining - IBOC separate combining method that uses a 10dB hybrid
combiner (coupler) to combine the station’s analog FM transmitter with an HD-only
transmitter. With this method 10% of FM transmitter and 90% of the HD tranmisttters’
output power is dissipated in a load.
Hybrid Combiner - a combiner that operates with similar, or dissimilar input power
levels by design.
Interleaved Antennas - a low loss space-combining method that employs two antenna
inputs; one for FM and a second for the HD signal. In an interleaved antenna system the
antenna bays are alternately radiating the FM and HD signals.
Managed Ethernet Switch - A switch is a hardware device that forwards and filters
data between network segments. A Managed switch that has configurable parameters
such has Port Priority and Flow Control (setting port data rates). A managed switch is
useful for industrial systems (high noise environments). This includes where the
Ethernet traffic has multiple HD radio data sources on one segment. An example would
be an Importer, PAD source and monitor applications all competing for access to an
Exporter that is feeding an Exciter (HDx-FM Flexstar Exciter) over an STL.
MPS - Main Program Service. The stations main program audio delivered from the
station’s on-air studio. Currently required to be the identical program audio as the main
FM (audio).

FM HD Radio System
MPS PAD - Main Program Service Program Associated Data. Program related data
such as song title and artist information. Delivered in the iBiquity protocol from the
station’s audio hard disk storage system via an Ethernet or RS232 communications port.
This data is then fed to the HDE-100 Exporter and is displayed as text on the HD
receiver.
Separate Amplification - Two transmitters are used; one for FM only and one for HD
only.
Separate Antennas - A low-loss, space-combining technique that employs the station’s
existing FM main antenna, and the station’s licensed auxiliary antenna for transmitting
the HD Radio sidebands. The analog and digital signals are effectively combined in
space. The primary advantage of using separate antennas is very low loss to the HD
signal, significantly reducing the HD transmitter power requirements. The primary
disadvantage is unequal azimuth radiation patterns and resulting reception variation of
the analog to digital signal ratios.
Split Level Combining (SLC) - A Harris exclusive method of developing a hybrid
IBOC signal using a combination of separate amplification and common amplification.
Today’s systems utilize a 3dB, 4.77dB, or 6dB hybrid combiner to make the most
efficient use of the existing analog transmitter, and to properly size the digital
transmitter to be capable of the digital-only power levels in the future. SLC also
provides minimum combiner losses, maximum combining efficiency, and improved
overall AC to RF efficiency compared to Separate Combining.
SPS - Supplemental Program Service. Also referred to as Supplemental Audio Service,
Supplemental audio programming (1 to 4 additional ’channels’) is input to the HDI-100
Importer in AES3 digital format.
SPS PAD - Supplemental Program Service Program Associated Data. Identical to MPS
PAD, but for any of the SPS audio programs.
SRC - Sample rate converter.
Switch - Ethernet distribution device that is more spohisticated than a hub.
TCP IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.
UDP - User Datagram Protocol. A simple unidirectional communication protocol that
sends, but requires no acknowledgement of packets being received.

Section 1 Introduction/Specifications
FM HD Radio System
Connection Manager: The Connection Manager is responsible for managing the
connections from the various service providers. It authenticates service providers and
delivers the specific information regarding the Contracts and Services for each service
provider. It provides the mechanism for service providers to deliver data services to the
EOC. It allows multiple service providers to connect to the EOC as well as for multiple
services to be delivered from either one or multiple service providers. The Connection
Manager connects to the EOC Database for authentication information as well as to the
Logistics Processor for bandwidth and QoS information.
Contract Management API: Service providers deliver data services to the EOC based
upon their ‘Contracts’ with the broadcast stations or the EOC with regards to the
services sent and the bandwidth and QoS requirements. The Contract Management API
provides a standard interface for client applications to add data about service provider
contracts to the EOC Database and to administer this information.
EOC Database: The persistent data for the functioning of the EOC is stored in the EOC
database. All the Administrative functionality is handled by interaction with this
database. Administration is basically an offline activity to enable broadcast stations to
configure the EOC according to their requirements. Other EOC components like the
Connection Manager and the Logistics Processor write data about their functioning into
the EOC Database. The EOC Monitor component connects to the EOC database to view
the status of the EOC and the data.
Exporter Configuration API: The Exporter Configuration API basically supports the
ability to configure an exporter in order to support data services. It provides a standard
way for client applications to access and configure an exciter through an exporter. The
API supports the management of station information, mode configuration and channel
configuration, which enables clients to allocate bandwidth resources for data services.
HD PAD API: The HDPAD API allows applications to create and transmit PAD
content. It allows for application to input PAD data without having to worry about the
data encoding and transfer protocols. The PAD API transfers the data streams to the
SPS Processor in the EOC where it is multiplexed with the audio streams.
HD Studio - An application that can be used to stream audio from locally stored files to
the SPS processor. it will also generate SPS PAD, MP1, MP2, MP3, etc. service modes.
Logistics Processor: The Logistics Processor is responsible for the data reception from
the service providers in accordance with the specific protocol chosen for that particular
service provider. It is also responsible for managing the bandwidth and QoS for each
service provider as defined in the Contracts between the service provider and the
broadcast station. It communicates with the Connection Manager as well as the
Exporter. It also communicates with the EOC Database in order to retrieve
configuration information and save its performance data.

Monitoring API: The Monitoring API allows real-time monitoring of the EOC. It
provides a standard way for client applications to monitor EOC activity and
configuration details about the EOC. It provides an interface for viewing EOC
configuration, service provider connections, services sent, throughput and application
functionality.
QoS - Quality of Service.
Resource Manager/EOC Monitor: The Resource Manager and the EOC Monitor are
sample client applications which are used to configure and monitor the EOC through
the various APIs. The Resource Manager provides a graphical user-interface, which
combines the functionalities of Contract Management and the EOC. Administration
through the Contract Management API and the Exporter Configuration API. The EOC
Monitor helps in monitoring EOC functionality through the Monitor API. The EOC
components are designed so that various such that other such third-party applications
can be developed to access the full EOC functionality through the APIs.
Service Modes - Operating modes for the HD carriers. MP2 is 6 kHz wider (toward
outer of channel) and MP3 14 kHz wider than MP1, MP4, 328 kHz wider. There is a
corresponding increase in payload data rate. Special permission or notification is
required to use the wider modes. There are a total of seven primary service modes and
four secondary service modes; MP1 through MP7, MS1 through MS4. Modes MP5 to
MP7 and MS1 to MS4 will be used with the all digital mode in the future.
Service Provider API: The Service Provider API provides a common interface for
service providers to access and deliver data services to the EOC. It helps in the
connection/disconnection of services to the EOC. It provides the communication
protocol used between applications and the EOC Connection Manager. It allows for
service provider authentication and error reporting. The Service Provider API supports
discrete object broadcast which allows a service provider to send variable-sized objects
of arbitrary data types over the HD Radio system.
SPS Processor: The SPS Processor captures the multiple audio streams and performs
the HDC encoding. It also captures the SPS Program Associated Data (PAD) data
packets and performs the encapsulation of these data packets. The SPS Processor is also
responsible for the multiplexing of the encapsulated SPS PAD within the encoded audio
streams.

FM HD Radio System
Boost Pro Amplifier
For multi-cabinet transmitter systems, such as ZD (dual cabinets), separate mode and
SLC systems, the Boost Pro is used to increase the gain of the ALT RF OUT output of
the HDx-FM exciter to appropriate levels for the IPA stage of a 2nd cabinet or 2nd
transmitter.
1.5.3
High Power Combiner With Reject Load
This will be a 10dB combiner when used for the Separate combining mode, or either a
3dB, 4.77dB, or 6dB combiner when used for Split-Level combining. The RF outputs
of analog and HD transmitters will be applied to the Input Ports of the combiner. The
combiner will mix these two inputs at the specified ratio, with the majority of this signal
being output to the Antenna Port. Any variation of the input ratio will cause an
imbalance which will appear at the Reject Port and may result in not meeting IBOC
specifications.
The reject load is typically a 50 Ohm resistive device connected to the Reject Port of a
high-power combiner. It must be appropriately sized and should be monitored at all
times, as it will be continuously utilized under the predicted normal conditions and
could be severely taxed upon an unbalanced condition such as:
• No, or low RF output from one transmitter.
• High antenna VSWR condition.
Since this device is continuously dissipating RF energy into its surrounding area in the
form of heat, it may be desirable to install it in a different location away from the
transmitter. Ideally it could be located in a specially air conditioned room for maximum
resistor life.
1.5.4
Test Load
Optional 50 Ohm resistive load, sized according to expected transmitter RF output.
Used for testing purposes when up-to full power output is necessary to test a transmitter
without radiating the signal. Depending upon system configuration, this load could be
sized for the entire IBOC system output, or switched into the output of an individual
transmitter.
1.5.5
Isolator (Circulator with Reject Load)
A circulator is a ferromagnetic device that steers an RF signal, in one direction only,
through a circular path. A typical use for a circulator is a 3-port device with the 1st port

connected to the digital transmitter’s output. The 2nd port is the output to the antenna,
but also the return path of the analog signal being imposed upon the digital. A 50 Ohm
resistive load is attached to the 3rd and final port to absorb the analog return signal.
A circulator may be used to improve isolation between the HD and FM transmitter’s
PAs particularly when separate combining using an auxiliary antenna for the digital
signal, or dual-feed or interleaved antenna types.
1.5.6
Remote Control Interface
With the proliferation of serial data improvements in recent years, many comprehensive
remote control systems have been developed for complete monitoring and control of a
transmitter and facility.
1.5.7
Power Monitoring Device
A power averaging monitor device will be necessary to accurately measure and display
the RF signal level. With IBOC systems, the more monitoring stages in use, the better
multiple transmitters and peripheral equipment can be protected.

General IBOC Information
There are several methods of combining the analog (FM) and digital (HD) RF to create
an IBOC signal, and there may be up to four possible modes of operation - also known
as Modulation Format - that may be used in a typical IBOC system including a backup
mode. The four modes of operation are:
FM - Analog RF only; this could be the analog backup mode in the event of a
digital failure.
FM+HD - Analog & digital (at -20dB) RF, also known as Common Combining.
HD - Digital RF only, used for Separate Combining, such as 10dB combined, dualfeed and interleaved antenna, and dual antennas.
SLC - Analog & digital (at various ratios) RF, also known as Split-level or Midlevel Combining.

CAUTION:
ALL CONNECTIONS REFERRED TO IN THIS INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
SHOULD BE VERIFIED USING THE SCHEMATICS SUPPLIED WITH THE
TRANSMITTER. THE SCHEMATICS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED THE MOST
ACCURATE IN CASE OF A DISCREPANCY.
To facilitate proper installation and initial checkout, all applicable technical
documentation should be carefully studied to obtain a thorough understanding of the
principles of operation, circuitry, nomenclature, and performance characteristics for
each piece of system equipment to be installed.
The transmitter installation is accomplished in the following order:
1. Equipment Placement
2. HDx-FM Exciter/Boost Pro Installation
3. Air System and Cooling
4. Grounding
5. Power Supply Connections
6. Audio Connections

Boost Pro Installation
The Boost Pro amplifier is used in the FlexStar HDX HD+ systems. If retrofitting an
existing ZHD transmitter to HD+, the IP2D precorrector will be replaced by the
FlexStar BoostPro amplifier.
2.3.3
Air System And Cooling
As necessary, refer to corresponding technical documentation for information on air
handling requirements for each piece of system equipment to be installed.
The air ventilation opening on the top the transmitter cabinet(s)/rack(s) must not be
restricted. This is an important consideration when a wall will be installed along the
front top of the transmitter. A 4" to 6" space between the top of the transmitter and the
bottom of the hood is recommended.
2.3.4
Grounding
Proper grounding systems and technique must be used in and around the facility, and
lightning protection must be in place for any type of signal entering or leaving the
facility. This section is a brief introduction to grounding practices; it is not intended to
be an all-inclusive tutorial. Refer to "Grounding Basics" later in this section for more
information.
2.3.4.1
Large Equipment Grounding Connections
For each large piece of system equipment, determine if a central ground strap
attachment point is available, typically on the floor of a cabinet. For a Single-Point
grounding system, connect to this attachment point by directly routing a 2" copper
ground strap to the grounding system common point.
2.3.4.2
Rack mounted Device Grounding Considerations
For any equipment that is installed into a rack or transmitter cabinet, a rack chassis
ground buss bar should be installed if not provided. Most rack-mount equipment chassis
have a clearly labeled grounding point on it. Connect a safety ground cable (a green,
with yellow stripe wire, sized in accordance with the source breaker - typically 14
gauge wire for a 15A breaker) from that point to the copper ground buss bar.

Signal Lightning Protection
All signals entering or exiting the transmitter site building must be protected against
lightning.
2.3.5
Multiple Cabinet Interconnections
For multiple cabinet transmitter systems, there may be up to three typical signal paths
that need to be connected between cabinets.
2.3.5.1
RF Sample for RTAC
For ZHD+ transmitters, an RF sample from the splitter mounted on the ceiling of the
transmitter ("A" Cabinet if a dual system) is connected through a 10dB pad to the RTAC
RF Sample Input labeled XMTR on the HDx exciter rear panel.
In ZX transmitters, an RF sample from the monitor port is divided by a 6 dB splitter to
feed the station modulation monitor, and the RTAC RF Sample Input labeled XMTR on
the HDx exciter rear panel. A 20dB attenuator is placed before the RTAC input to drop
to the RF sample to an appropriate level.

CAUTION:
ANY REMOTE OR EXTENDED CONTROL CONNECTIONS SHOULD BE
CONNECTED ONLY AFTER THE TRANSMITTER SYSTEM IS CHECKED OUT
AND FULLY OPERATIONAL.
NOTE:
The HDx-FM exciter will not generate HD carriers unless one of the two following conditions is met:
2.4.1
•
The HDx-FM is properly connected to, and configured for the HDE-100
Exporter and the HD Carriers are ENABLED (this is the recommended
method)
- or -
•
The HD carriers can be internally generated, for initial testing, by turning on
the HD Carriers (HDx-FM: Output Setup, HD Carriers, ENABLED), Exgine
input INTERNAL and Exgine Output PATTERN. It is very important to
note that this HD Test Pattern mode must have Exgine input set to
"Exporter" and Exgine output "NORMAL" for normal HD operation
once the HDE-100 Exporter is properly connected and configured.
General Startup Information
Each transmitter system is thoroughly checked out during factory final test but some
adjustments may be required during installation due to shipping, variations in primary
power, antenna systems, or transmission line differences.
Follow these steps to bring the transmitter system online for the first time.
!
CAUTION:
IF THERE APPEARS TO BE A MALFUNCTION AT ANY ONE STEP, DO NOT
PROCEED TO THE NEXT STEP UNTIL THERE IS A RESOLUTION TO THE
MALFUNCTION.

2.4.2
Bring Up Each Transmitter (Cabinet) Independently
It is recommended that each transmitter be initially connected directly to a test load and
turned on, independently. Refer to corresponding documentation for detailed
procedures to verify proper operation.
2.4.3
Dual Cabinet Transmitter Systems
Once the correct operation of both transmitter cabinets of a Dual cabinet system
(ZDHD+) is verified independently, they must be combined, amplitude and phase
adjusted, and tested as a single entity. Refer to corresponding documentation for
detailed procedures to perform alignments and verify proper operation.
2.4.4
Connect All Transmitters to Combiner System
After the operation of each transmitter is verified, connect the combiner system
according to the system design.
2.4.5
SLC Phase Alignment
NOTE:
ZX transmitters are not configured for split level combining (SLC) per se. That
is, they are not aligned in factory for the transmission of a non-standard FM to
HD power ratio for use with a split level combiner. If SLC operation is desired
with a ZX transmitter, please contact Harris for information on the necessary
modifications and adjustments.

Grounding Basics
The importance of a good grounding system and lightning protection can hardly be
overemphasized for reasons of personnel safety, protection of the equipment, and
equipment performance. The following is only a brief overview.
Lightning and transient energy via the power line or tower connections can impose
serious threats to your personal safety as well as damage the equipment. For these
reasons you should have a good protective earthing system to divert these forms of
energy to earth ground. Proper grounding of the equipment also guards against
electrical shock hazards that would exist if the equipment failed in a way which put a
hazardous voltage on the chassis.
A good grounding system should include substantial grounding at the tower base using
copper ground rods and/or a buried copper ground screen, with copper strap used to
connect the tower base to earth ground. A low impedance will help carry lightning
current directly into the ground instead of into your building. Additionally, coax
shield(s) should be electrically connected to and exit the tower as near to the bottom as
practical to minimize the lightning voltage potential carried by the coax into your
building.
For multiple coax, a single point of entry into the building is best, with all connected to
a common grounding plate (or bulkhead panel) having a low impedance connection to
the building perimeter ground. Wide copper straps should be used for making the
connection from the common grounding plate to earth ground.
A common grounding plate is also the best location for coaxial surge protectors for
sensitive equipment such as an STL receiver. Ideally, this plate should also be the entry
point for all signal lines, and serve as a single point ground for AC power surge
protection.
A good ground system should include perimeter grounding of the transmitter building
using copper ground rods and copper strap. There should also be a copper strap running
from tower ground to the building perimeter ground.
Good grounding and shielding will help keep stray RF current to a minimum. RF
interference usually shows up in one of several ways, intermittent problems with digital
or remote control circuits, audio feedback or high pitched noise. Even a small amount
of non-shielded wire makes a very efficient antenna for RF and transient energy. If RF
is allowed into the audio equipment, it can be rectified and may show up as noise or
feedback. Wire and cable shields should normally be connected at both ends to the
equipment chassis, audio cables should have the shield connected to ground on one side
only.

Component requirements for MPS service
Listed here will be brief descriptions of typical components that may be in the MPS
chain in your station. Brief but specific requirements of each component will be
discussed to help you evaluate your equipment for compatibility. Fold-out sheets in the
back of this manual will assist you in configuring your equipment together as a system.
2.6.1
FM/MPS AES audio input and MPS Data
The audio intended for the FM analog and the HD carriers, referred to as the "host"
AES audio, needs to be AES3 format, 32kHz to 96kHz.
MPS PAD data is provided by your automation equipment and must be formatted to the
iBiquity standard for MPS PAD by the automation equipment. The interconnection for
MPS PAD begins at the automation system equipment at the studio (Audio Vault,
Prophet etc.). Typically it is over Ethernet and needs to connect to the Exporter through
Etherenet. MPS PAD can also be connected to the Exporter over an RS232 serial
connection to the DB9 on the rear panel.
There are quite a few options for the audio processor configuration. Orban and Omnia,
and others, offer an all in one processor that has dual outputs for both HD and FM
(analog). There is even an option for the diversity audio delay to occur in the processor
rather than the HDE-100 exporter or DexStar.
2.6.2
HD Audio Processor
The HD audio processor is customer provided if desired and is placed before the MPS
audio input to the HDE-100 exporter.
2.6.3
FM Audio Processor
The FM audio processor is customer provided and is connected to the MAIN delay
OUT from the HDE-100 exporter.
2.6.4
HDE-100 Exporter
The inputs and outputs of the HDE-100 exporter will be addressed separated below.

4/18/11
FM HD Radio System
2.6.4.1
Section 2 Installation & Initial Turn-On
MAIN Delay IN (for analog carriers)
The Main analog FM Program source called "host" AES audio, is connected to rear
panel Main Delay IN connector and comes from your main program source. This AES
audio can be 32kHz to 96kHz. The input connector is a female 3-pin XLR.
2.6.4.2
MPS Audio IN (for main HD carriers)
The Main HD FM Program source AES3 audio input (the same audio as the host) is
connected to the rear panel MPS Audio IN connector and comes from your main
program source. This AES audio can be 32kHz to 96kHz. The input connector is a
female 3-pin XLR.
2.6.4.3
MAIN Delay OUT
The MPS audio output leaves the HDE-100 exporter at the MAIN Delay OUT
connector. A 3-pin male XLR connector. It goes to the FM processor for delivery to the
HDx-FM Exciter via an STL if not co-located.
2.6.4.4
44.1 kHz Clock OUT
This output from the Exporter is only used to synchronize the SPS audio going to the
Importer. If you are not running SPS, no connection is needed. This connection is
outlined under the heading Component requirements for SPS service.
2.6.4.5
Ethernet
This is the HDE-100 exporter output connection to the HDx-FM Exciter for the HD
signal; MPS audio for digital carriers and any SPS (if used). It is also how the MPS
PAD is inserted into the system. For this reason, it is easier to use an Ethernet switch to
handle the traffic in and out of the HDE-100 exporter for this one connection. If MPS
PAD is not used, a direct connection can be made to the HDx-FM Exciter, however if
the HDE-100 exporter and Exciter are not located in the same area, a different kind of
link is needed; STL or IP for example.

Section 2 Installation & Initial Turn-On
2.6.5
FM HD Radio System
STL
When selecting an STL, the minimum requirements for the STL, it has to pass 32 kHz
AES audio and 192Kbps UDP. Future systems with expanded HD capability will need
to pass 300 kBs UPD only.
Other methods to send the information to the transmitter site include T1/E1, direct fiber
or Satellite.
2.7
Component requirements for SPS service
The following equipment/connections are needed when adding any SPS service to the
MPS described above. Brief but specific requirements for each component will be
discussed here. Refer to the fold-out sheets in the back for the SPS component
configuration into the system.
2.7.1
SPS Audio Processor and rate converter
The audio intended for any SPS channel, needs to be AES3 format, 32kHz to 96kHz.
Any SPS audio must be rate converted to 44.1 kHz and synchronized to the Exporter
with a Lynx AES16 XLR audio board. Utilize the Exporter 44.1 kHz clock output for
the "sync in" to the rate converter. If the processor does not have a rate converter, a
separate rate converter will be needed, or an audio input card inside the Importer with
the sample rate converter function such as the Lynx AES16SCR. Some audio
processors may need to use the monitor output of the Exporter as a sync source.
2.7.2
NeuStar
The NeuStar is an optional codec pre-conditioner. Meaning that it will modify the AES
audio when there are low bitrate situations that would needlessly require more work
from the codec than it is capable of. It does this so that excess audio artifacts that might
be heard will be minimized. The NeuStar will reduce problems called "codec busters"
such as DC offset, clipping and L to R static timing issues.
2.7.3
HDE-100 Exporter 44.1 kHz Clock OUT
This output from the Exporter is only used to synchronize the SPS audio going to the
Importer. If you are not running SPS, no connection is needed. You may have to use a
transformer to convert this 110 ohm output to a 75 ohm BNC input depending on what
type of SPS processor or converter you are using. An impedance transformer like the

Section 2 Installation & Initial Turn-On
Canare 110 ohm to 75 ohm transformer, Harris part number CANBCJ-XJ-TRB may be
required to interface between the Exciter and the processor.
2.7.4
HDI-100 Importer
The AES audio into the Importer should be 44.1kHz and synchronized to the Exporter.
The 8 channel Importer digital card has two identical cable assemblies. The connector
on the right side (as viewed from the rear) is Port A and the XLR audio cables that
connect there are inputs 1 through 4. On port B (the left connector) the audio inputs are
5 through 8. The Lnyx AES16 SCRC audio card with the built-in rate converter may
only have the sample rate converter function awailable on inputs 5 - 8, check your unit
to verify which audio card you have.
All SPS AES channels must be rate converted and synchronized to the Exporter rate.
Synchronize by using the 44.1 kHz clock from the Exporter to the Sync IN on a
processor/rate converter prior to the Importer. They will connect to the cable bundle on
the rear of the Importer. Other inputs are SPS PAD and any Advance Applications
Services (AAS) that may be used; via Ethernet.
SPS PAD data is formatted by your source equipment according to the iBiquity standard
for SPS. To enable the PAD data to go through, the network ports 4444 and 4446 must
be opened by you network administrator. SPS PAD data is provided by your automation
equipment and must be formatted to the iBiquity standard for SPS PAD by the
automation equipment.
When connecting an Importer to an Exporter through a network, expose ports; 10000,
10001, 10002, 9025 and 8025 for communications.
As part of the intial setup and testing, the Exporter IP address is set in two Importer
locations; Edit EOC AdminConfig.xml and Edit EOCConfig.xml.
2.8
Ethernet to the system components
The Ethernet connects the components together and is essential for transmission of the
HD carrier into the STL link. It is highly recomended to keep all non-HD traffic off of
the Ethernet that connects the Flexstar equipment.
The preferred method is to use an Ethernet managed switch and straight through CAT 5
cables with RJ45 connectors.

3.6
FM HD Radio System
Emergency Operation
In the unlikely event of a transmitter system malfunction, the transmitter’s front panel
LEDs and diagnostic display, and the front panel LEDs and GUI displays on the HDxFM exciter and Boost Pro should quickly assist the technician in determining a probable
cause.
The next section discusses General System level responses, or recovery steps that apply
to all units. The sections following detail specific emergency responses for the various
units that may be part of a system.
NOTE:
Refer to the specific technical manual, of the system device malfunctioning, for
detailed information.
3.6.1
General System Response
Depending on the Front Panel indications, early steps in troubleshooting a transmitter
failure can be based on one or more of the following:
3.6.1.1
No Front Panel LEDs or GUI
1. Reset circuit breakers
2. Check AC Mains
3.6.1.2
Front Panel Buttons Unresponsive
If a transmitter or GUI screen appears to not be responding to button pushes it is
possible the controller has had a glitch, and needs to be reset. Simply disconnect AC
power to the device for 10 seconds, then restore power and turn on.
3.6.2
HDx-FM Emergency Response
3.6.2.1
FAULT LED Illuminated
The HDx-FM exciter’s front panel LEDs will turn red if a fault condition is detected.
Pressing the front panel button next to the red LED will navigate the GUI to the

corresponding menu where the fault is indicated. Refer to the corresponding
documentation for explanations of fault indications for the HDx-FM.
3.6.3
Platinum ZHD+ Emergency Response
3.6.3.1
FAULT LED Illuminated
For the all ZHD+ transmitters, if the Fault LED is continuously lit it is an indication of
a currently active fault. If the Fault LED is blinking, it is an indication of a past fault
that is no longer active and transmitter should be operating normally or at least capable
of normal operation.
Navigate through the Diagnostic display to the Fault Log to determine fault. Inactive
faults can be reset from that menu. The operator may refer to the transmitter technical
manual, Section 3, for specific details on how to view and clear the fault description in
the Diagnostic Display’s fault log. If more troubleshooting is necessary, a technician
can refer to Section 6 of that manual for fault explanations.
3.6.3.2
FOLDBACK LED Illuminated
If the ZHD+ transmitter has an illuminated Foldback LED it is presently in a foldback
condition and the transmitter may be operating at a lower power or it may be folded
back to OFF. However, the conditions causing the foldback may no longer be present
and you can take the following steps to determine if normal operation can be resumed.
1. Even if the transmitter is on, press the HIGH power button
2. Observe for transmitter to return 100% TPO with no foldback indication
3. If foldback resumes, you may allow the transmitter to foldback to a level
that it will allow continued operation to stay on the air until repairs can be
made
!
CAUTION:
DO NOT REPEATEDLY HIT THE HIGH POWER BUTTON. THIS COULD CAUSE
DAMAGE TO TRANSMITTER.
4. Investigate and repair the condition causing the foldback before pressing
the HIGH power button to resume normal operation
4/18/11
888-2587-001
WARNING: Disconnect primary power prior to servicing.
3-9
Section 3 Operation
FM HD Radio System
The operator may refer to the transmitter technical manual, Section 3, for specific
details on how to view and clear the Foldback fault-related description in the Diagnostic
Display’s fault log. If more troubleshooting is necessary, a technician can refer to
Section 6 of that manual for detailed fault explanations.
3.6.3.3
INTERLOCK LED Illuminated
The Interlock LED will illuminate for following reasons:
•
•
Transmitter is muted because the Failsafe loop is open
The transmitter is turned off and will not be allowed to turn on because the Interlock
loop is open. This could be a response to a fault signal from a reject load, VSWR or
thermal detector, RF switch, etc.
Navigate through the ZHD+ Diagnostic display to the Fault Log to determine which
loop is open and causing the LED indication. The operator may refer to the transmitter
technical manual, Section 3, for specific details on how to view and clear the fault
description in the Diagnostic Display’s fault log. If more troubleshooting is necessary,
qualified personnel can refer to Section 6 of that manual for fault explanations.
3.6.4
ZX Emergency Response
3.6.4.1
ZX Basic Operating Principle
The ZX transmitter is designed to automatically stay on air at the maximum safe power
possible. It will operate at the power level determined by its internal automatic power
control circuit unless commanded to reduce power via any of the foldback conditions
indicated on the front panel (i.e. reverse power, PA current, PS current, overtemperature).
There are two exceptions to this principle in ZX transmitters produced after June 2007:
1. A sudden reverse power overload (i.e. an arc due to VSWR) will cause the
transmitter to issue an internal power lower command and permanently
lower the output power. With each successive arc, the transmitter will
lower power further until the cycle of arcing is broken.
2. Certain overtemperture conditions will cause the transmitter to automatically reduce its power by approximately 50% until a reset command is
issued by a front panel ON command. This is typically the case when one
or more PA modules are removed from service for extended periods of time
3-10

4/18/11
Section 3 Operation

in the ZX2000 and ZX3500 models. The transmitter automatically lowers
its power to reduce stress on the internal combiner reject loads. This is
referred to as the TEMP REDUCTION mode and is indicated by an open
collector on the parallel remote interface, or via the optional WEB Remote
interface.
NOTE:
The basic ZX transmitter does not latch alarm conditions. The indications on the
front panel only indicate the current operating state. To examine past alarm history, it is necessary to examine the web pages provided by the optional WEB
Remote interface or simply latch and log the alarm in an external third-party
remote control product.
3.6.4.2
ZX First Response Troubleshooting
If the transmitter output power is low or zero, perform the following checks:
1. Are the PS module fans running with a green (AC OK) light on the PS
modules? (AC power applied to unit)
2. Are the main cooling fans running? (unit is "on")
3. Is the external interlock circuit closed (ON button will not work otherwise)
4. Are the LVPS voltages present? (row of three green LEDs on reverse of
controller PCB)
5. Is the exciter un-muted and producing power? (should un-mute when transmitter is on)
6. Are the PA module status LEDs not red? (PA modules are on)
7. Are the PA module status LEDs glowing green? (PA drawing current…power level dependent. LEDs may not glow at low power levels,
especially in HD mode)
Based on the results of these checks, search for additional information and instructions
in the Troubleshooting Table section on the ZX Transmitter Instruction Book 888-2594001.

4.2
Boost Pro Circuit Descriptions
Refer to Figure 4-1 on page 4-2 for the following descriptions. The Boost Pro boost
amplifier can be divided into three parts for sake of circuit discussion: Control,
amplification, and display. The control portion handles the communication, phase
adjustment, and the power control of the RF signal. Amplification applies a gain of
+45dB to the RF signal. Finally, the display interfaces with the control via SPI bus. The
same amplifier used in the FlexStar™ Exciter is used in the Boost Amplifier.
The Controller monitors the power amplifier and relays information to the various
connectors. Output power level can be changed by adjusting the voltage on a variable
attenuator in line with the RF signal. The source of the APC voltage can be switched
between an external source via the transmitter interface connector, or an internal digitalto-analog converter. This APC switch is controlled by the microcontroller. The phase of
the RF can also be adjusted via the microcontroller, or by information entering on the
RS232 port, GUI, or CAN interfaces. Communication and internal decision making is
done by the ‘376 Micro Module, which is a 32-bit microcontroller (MC9S12DP256)
with 256k of flash memory and 256k of SRAM memory. A CPLD (complex
programmable logic device - XC9536) is used to add logic to the monitoring of the
power amplifier and to add gating logic to the LCD display.
The automatic power control (APC) voltage of the system is selectable from two
different sources, external or internal. The APC signal controls the DC bias on a
variable attenuator in-line with the RF path feeding the power amplifier. The purpose of
the APC is to keep the power of the transmitter at a constant power level.

Section 4 Boost Pro Theory of
One of the requirements of the Boost Amplifier is to have adjustable phase for aligning
multiple cabinets. For this reason, the controller board features a 90° hybrid in a voltage
controlled phase shifter circuit. The phase shifter has the capability of adjusting the
phase of the RF from 0º to -90° compared to the input.
Several analog voltages are needed throughout the Boost Pro. The phase adjustment
circuit and the APC circuit both require an analog voltage to operate correctly. Analog
voltages representing the power amplifier voltage, current, forward power, and reflected
power are also needed for setting external limits. For this reason three AD5327s are
used.

A to D Converter
For monitoring the power amplifier, a 12-bit eight channel analog-to-digital converter is
used: TLV2548 from Texas Instruments. This converter is used to monitor the PA’s
forward power, reflected power, voltage, current, and temperature.
4.2.3
Power Supplies
There are two separate power supplies for the Boost Amplifier. The first is a single
+24Vdc 200W supply for the PA. The second is a triple-output 50W supply at +5Vdc,
+15Vdc and -15Vdc. Both power supplies are capable of 85-264VAC / 47-440Hz
inputs.
4.2.4
Front Panel
The front panel uses a 128x64 dot LCD, warning LEDs and buttons to interact with the
Boost Pro. The interface to the LCD is on the data bus.
4.2.5
Power Amplifier
The amplifier contains 3 stages of amplification. The first stage uses an LD-MOSFET
in Class A operation mode. Class of operation of following 2 stages depends on
modulation of amplified signal and transmitter configuration. The class of operation is
controlled by the binary level control signal that comes from system controller. When
the Boost Pro is used as a driver delivering RF signal to high power transmitter, the 2nd
two stages also operate in class A for better linearity.

Alignments
5.1
5
Introduction
This section provides maintenance and alignment information, for the purpose of
routine maintenance, and replacement of various components for the ZHD+ series of
transmitter systems.
5.2
Alignments
See corresponding documentation for specific details of alignment procedures.
5.2.1
Split-Level Combined systems
SLC systems should periodically be checked for best (lowest) reject power. If the reject
power has increased, verify the power out of each transmitter, the SLC FM+HD carrier
levels and possibly readjust the "SLC Phase Adjustment" on the HDx-FM Exciter
(HDx-FM: Output Setup 3/4).
5.3
Maintenance
See corresponding documentation for specific details of maintenance procedures. In
general all air filters should be periodically replaced with clean ones and the entire area
should be kept clean and free of clutter and debris. Vacuum cleaners with disposable
HEPA type bags are prefered over large shop vacs that allow lot of dust to simply pass
through.

Introduction
This section is to be used by the service technician to go beyond the steps provided in
the Emergency Operation section (in Chapter 3) to troubleshoot a System-level
malfunction. Use this along with corresponding documents for detailed circuit
understanding and diagnosis.
NOTE:
Before preceding, see "3.6 Emergency Operation" on page 3-8 for initial steps in
restoring a transmitter to operational status in the event of a fault condition.
The first step will be to attempt to determine which unit is causing the malfunction by

Diagnostics
A wealth of information is obtainable via the ZHD+ transmitter’s front panel LEDs and
Diagnostic display, and the HDx-FM front panel LEDs and GUI to help discern the
cause of a malfunction or failure of the transmitter system.
Upon an LED or GUI fault indication, determine the fault by navigating to the Fault
Log through the Diagnostic display on the ZHD+ transmitter, or the GUI screen on the
HDx-FM exciter. It is highly recommended to write down the exact fault in a notebook.
Refer to corresponding documentation for troubleshooting and fault explanations for
malfunctioning device.
6.2.1
Boost Pro Fault Indication
The Boost Pro front panel LED will turn red if a fault condition is detected. Press INFO,
then FAULT SUBMENU to view a listing of statuses where the malfunction would be
indicated by the word FAULT.
To reset the fault, press INFO, then CONTROL SUBMENU, move cursor to point to
RESET FAULT. Press ENTER to clear the fault status. If the fault indication is still
present, the condition causing the malfuntion will need to be identified and corrected.
6.2.1.1
Boost Pro 3-Strike Faults
To prevent temporary fluctuations in power, temperature, current, or voltage from
causing nuisance fault-off conditions, a 3-strike routine is programmed into the sensing
circuits. If any of the following faults are indicated, it is because 3 separate momentary
fault conditions over a specified period of time, or a continuous fault condition over a
specified time has occured.
VSWR TRIP: Reflected power overload, based on the TX type and modulation
defined in the master configuration file.
FWD PWR TRIP: Forward power overload, based on the TX type and modulation
defined in the master configuration file.

Schematics, Wiring and Block Diagrams
The following Harris schematic and signal name conventions apply:
•
Active Low = "/" - A signal name preceded by the forward slash is an active low.
Example: /TEMP_FAULT means the Temp Fault signal is active when at a low state
(also known as TEMP_FAULT ’not’, or TEMP_FAULT ’bar’).
•
Schematic Continuation - A square block ending point of a named signal, accompanied by a number-forward slash-letter-number is an indication of that signal continuing on to another page of schematic.
Example: AUDIO 14/D1 - Indicates that the AUDIO signal will continue to page 14 of
same numbered schematic at a point where the X coordinate ’D’ meets the Y coordinate
’1’.
•
LEDs used to display a given condition when illuminated are designated as DS(n),
with (n) indicating the LED’s designator value as shown on the board’s schematic
and silkscreen.
Example: DS4 is the Analog Mode Selected LED, indicating the Analog Mode is
currently selected when it is illuminated (External I/O board).

HD Troubleshooting
6.5.1
No or Corrupt HD Output
The HDx-FM exciter will not generate HD carriers unless one of the two following
condtions is met:
•
The HDx-FM is properly connected to, and configured for the HDE-100
Exporter and the HD Carriers are ENABLED (this is the recommended
method)
- or -
•
The HD carriers can be internally generated by turning on the HD Carriers
(HDx-FM: Output Setup, HD Carriers, ENABLED), exgine input to internal
and exgine output to pattern.
NOTE:
Exgine input must be set to exporter and exgine outout set to normal when the
HDE-100 exporter is connected for normal HD operation.
•
It is very important to note that this HD Test Pattern mode must be
DISABLED for normal HD operation once the HDE-100 is properly
connected and configured.
NOTE:
Prior to connecting both the HDx-FM exciter and HDE-100 exporter to your
LAN system, it is strongly recommended that the two units be initially connected
together directly using a standard network, a standard or crossover cable, or
Ethernet switch (not a hub).
See the HDx-FM Exciter manual for additional troubleshooting information. The
indications on the Exciter GUI page; Signal Processing page 3/5 will go a long way to
diagnose poor performance.
6.6
Ethernet Troubleshooting
Briefly, when Ethernet is not working or is working poorly, it is best to simplify the
system until you locate the problem. Take advantage of the diagnostic indicator LEDs
on the Ethernet ports and simple test applications like PING and IPCONFIG that are
built into the equipment or available on a laptop or PC.
