The sensor uses an internal magnet that creates a magnetic field in front of the sensor. When ferrous metal is present, the flux density changes. When enough increase in flux is present, the digital output transistor turns on (goes low for NPN sensors, high for PNP sensors). The ferrous content, shape, and size of the target will affect the gap at which the sensor switches. These sensors are offered with standard factory programming as well as custom programming options. Standard programming switches the sensor on at a .375" gap with a .05" hysteresis. These ferrous metal detectors can be programmed to your application, are the most cost-effective digital metal detector sensors in our catalog, and are available in the greatest variety of housing options. These sensors are reprogrammable. If you require non standard or revised programming, contact us to discuss your options. These sensors may have an additional wire exiting the housing. This is a program wire that is to be left open. Connecting this wire to power or allowing it to ground will damage the sensor. For sensing ferrous metal at gaps greater than 0.4", choose from our other digital Ferrous Position sensors. The 250D2 - 870DP2 options offer increasing maximum detection gaps and have a field adjustable offset voltage.
