Assessment, Treatment and Case Management of the Suicidal Patient Presented by Kirk Strosahl, PhD Saturday, May 16, 2015 About the Program The Eastern Oregon Psychological Association (EOPA) is pleased to have Kirk Strosahl, PhD, join us and present to us for our annual conference at Wallowa Lake. Suicidal behavior, in all of its many forms, remains one of the biggest moral, ethical and clinical challenges that practicing clinicians face in daily practice. This workshop will introduce an innovative approach to the assessment, treatment and case management of suicidal patients. Participants will learn the different forms, and population prevalence of suicidal and selfdestructive behaviors. This will inform a discussion of the prediction and control dilemma, namely that suicide cannot be predicted on a case by case basis and conventional "risk management" strategies used to protect clients from self-harm can actually increase the likelihood of suicidal behavior. Participants will then learn a approach to responding to suicidal behavior as a form of problem solving behavior, rather than as a sign of mental illness. Principles of effective intervention will be examined in detail, as well as qualities of the effective clinician. Participants will also have an opportunity to practice making clinical responses to high risk, challenging client statements. Objectives 1) Appreciate the moral and ethical dilemmas associated with treating clients with suicidal behaviors 2) Demonstrate the different forms of suicidal behavior and clinical implications for treatment 3) Understand the risk prediction dilemma and the dangers associated with the false positive error problem 4) Appreciate a problem solving approach to suicidal behavior 5) Understand how mindfulness and acceptance strategies can be applied to diffuse suicidal crises 6) Lean how to respond to challenging statements made by suicidal clients in therapy About the Presenter Kirk Strosahl, PhD, is a nationally recognized expert in the assessment and treatment of suicidal behaviors. Dr. Strosahl earned his PhD in clinical psychology at Purdue University. He started his career as Director of the Suicidal Behaviors Research Clinic at the University of Washington, and was one of the original architects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. He later wrote, with colleague John Chiles, MD, the widely cited text: Clinical Manual for the Assessment and Treatment of Suicidal Patients (American Psychiatric Press, 2004).
