We can only say that we have grown them successfully over many years at our location in Brampton and have suffered no losses, even through severe winters. Their August-October flowers which come in shades of lavender, purple and pure white make them particularly valuable. They can be grown in sun or shade. Even in deep shade their flowering is not diminished. The foliage is totally evergreen which can contribute much to the winter landscape. The old leaves should be removed in spring before new growth appears. In Humber Nurseries’ remarkable collection of ornamental grasses, our large selection of Miscanthus varieties is particulary notable. They are upright clump-forming plants, all with showy plumes that are a delight in the summer and fall garden. They have all proved to be very hardy and can stand up even under snow and ice, adding interest to the winter scene. Annual maintenance requirements are cutting them back in spring. They are disease & pest free and tolerant of many soil conditions, but best in moist soil in full sun. In the descriptive listing that follows, you will find a number of dwarf varieties suitable for smaller gardens and a range of heights up to the Miscanthus floridulus that is the tallest. The colours of the showy flowerheads can vary from whitish-silver to gold and to chocolate-red, eventually drying to a fluffy tan. The Phyllostachys varieties need at least 3 to 4 hours of sun a day… the more the better. Bamboo can reach a height of 5-6 m in an ideal situation, with the canes reaching a diameter of 3 cm. Bamboo can be grown in most soil types but a heavy loam is best. Bamboo is very drought tolerant, but when too dry the leaves will roll up into cylinders. Moisture requirements are usually just regular watering practices once established. Bamboo does not need to be cut down unless you feel it has become too tall. Bamboo canes last approximately 7 years. New canes are produced every year so your Bamboo should have a long life span. The Phyllostachys varieties produce runners in spring and early summer. If this creates problems then simply grow the Bamboo in a large pot sunk into the ground with a few drain holes. Bamboo is also easily over wintered in containers and planters above ground. Chances are, the pot of Bamboo you purchased, over-wintered in that pot. Bamboo can be fertilized twice a year with a water soluble 30-10-10 fertilizer in early spring and early summer. Bamboo will remain green all year if it is kept out of the wind. Exposure to a lot of wind and dry conditions will turn the leaves brown. The plant will produce new leaves in the spring. Bamboo can be grown indoors in bright light all year. 100% Two Year Guarantee (except where stated) Umbrella Bamboo—Hardy #FARMU 2 gal - $49.99 Fargesia murielea. 240 cm.
