Shrugging at cooler weather, even in climates where night temperatures dip to near freezing, cyclamen survive. Less than a foot tall, and valued for their flowers, with upswept petals and variably patterned foliage, this charming mounded plant thrives in any well drained soil. Native to Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, where its natural habitat is woods, rocky places and alpine meadows, cyclamen spend part of the year in dormancy, then stand at attention when conditions are right. Cyclamen shows wonderfully as a woodland groundcover, in mixed winter planters, and is an excellent understudy for deciduous or evergreen shrubs.
