distinguished by spines on stems and
branches.

to 4 cm long.

Flowers mostly in spring and summer
in clusters of 5 white petals with
numerous stamens.
Small round berry-like fruit that can
be yellow, orange or red.

Native of Asia
Why is it a problem:
The thorny firethorn restricts access for both
stock and humans and shades out native species.
It is a problem on Mt Kimo, Mt Parnassus and
around the floodplain.
How it is spread:
Birds eat fruit and spread seed in droppings.

Cut and poison
Did you know?
The firethorn was originally grown in gardens for
the vibrant colour of its berries. Berry bearing
plants were particularly popular in the early
1900’s. It is still commonly grown and sold.
