Mahogany
Swietenia mahagoni
Family: Moraceae
The Mahogany Tree is one of our beautiful and
large street trees in Plantation. The leaves are
the best way to identify this tree and are
compound with four to five leaflets per leaf.
The blades of these striking leaves curve
backwards. Flowers are not particularly
noticeable but the fruits are egg- shaped
capsules to 5” long. When these capsules
mature, they split, releasing “winged” seeds.
This grand shade tree grows to about 75’ tall
and is a native to Florida.
As with all trees in the City of Plantation, please
make sure that they are of the Florida #1 or
better quality. This means the tree has one
central leader (not several) and good branch
structure with branches evenly spaced around
the trunk. Roots should grow away from the
trunk, not circle or girdle it. Please be sure to
follow proper planting procedures!
