NURSERY , INC .
2550 ADAMS STREET
RIVERSIDE CA 92504
Dear Business Friends,
Milfelds’ Nursery began over 65 years ago, Azaleas, Camellias and Gardenias were the “big
three” plants propagated by the Milfeld family. Years later, as the nursery industry began to promote the use of “companion plants” in the landscape, we expanded our offerings by adding a
variety of Hydrangeas and Ferns, both excellent companions and perfectly suited to the shaded
Azalea garden. The Hydrangeas provide a big, bolder leaf and a loud burst of color, while Ferns
offer a varied palette of textures as a green backdrop, complementing both foliage and flower.
New varieties of Hydrangeas and Ferns have been added over the years.
We pride ourselves on customer service and count on our experienced staff in production,
sales and administration to ensure that orders are prepared carefully and with personal attention
to each. We look forward to continuing to serve our faithful customers while searching for new
areas where our plants will thrive.
Your confidence in our quality is what made our first 65 years of success possible, and for
that we continue to say, “Thank you!” As we enter a new year, we wish you continued growth and
success.

AZALEA & CAMELLIA CARE INSTRUCTIONS
PLANTING ...
Azaleas are more shallow-rooted than camellias, and both should be planted in a well-drained, acid soil mix. We
recommend 40% peat moss , 40% pine bark, and 20% good, light soil — or sponge rock if the soil is clay or hard. Dig a
hole three to four times as wide and a few inches deeper than the size of the container. Place the plant so the root
crown is about 1-inch above ground level so the roots may obtain air. Fill firmly with peat mix around the root ball, water
thoroughly, and make certain that good drainage is maintained.
WATERING ...
Surprisingly, the word ‘azalea’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘dry’; more azaleas and camellias die from overwatering than from all other causes. Both should be kept moist, but never soggy wet. Water well and deeply, but only as
often as your own weather conditions demand.
FERTILIZING ...
Azaleas and camellias are very light feeders, and three to four feedings, spaced from April through September, are
sufficient. Use a good acid azalea/camellia food. Azalea leaves are sometimes subject to chlorosis, a yellowing
between the veins. This is usually caused by a lack of iron, and will most often respond to an application or two of
chelated iron, which can also be used on camellias if chlorosis develops.
PRUNING ...
Azaleas: Heavy pruning of undesirable branches should be done when the plants are at their peak of bloom (use
the branches as cut flowers!) Most varieties of azaleas require one good pinching or pruning of new Spring growth in
July, thus creating more branches and a dense bushiness for fall bud setting. However, when plants are young and
vigorous, and especially with the Southern Indicas, pruning on new growth should continue through September.
Camellias: Camellias only require pruning when young, and that to shape the plant. A 3-4 year old plant, or one well
established in the landscape, should not need pruning except to correct shape or limit growth. Pruning is best done in
early summer in advance of new fall growth and bud set.

CAMELLIAS
CAMELLIA SASANQUA
The Sasanquas are native to Japan, where garden cultivars were developed as early as the 14th century. The plants are open and elegant in habit,
graceful in form, tender of color, and frequently pleasing in fragrance. They are attractive all year, with foliage just the right size to allow it
to blend harmoniously with other shrubs without dominating the picture as the denser growing, larger leafed japonicas do.

MISCELLANEOUS
Native to South Africa, the Thunbergia is an angular-branched shrub that may grow to 8 or 10 feet tall and as wide. Evergreen, the leaves are a
dark, shiny green to 6 in. long. The fragrant flowers are creamy white, long tubed and flat-faced, 3-4 in. across. It seems somewhat more tolerant of
cool conditions and less-than-perfect soil than other gardenias. With age, G. thunbergia becomes more vigorous and flowers more profusely.
GARDENIA THUNBERGIA
Fragrant, creamy white. Single flat-faced tubular flowers; 8 petal lobes spread
2½ in. across on a 4 in. tube. Open, erect shrub or small tree to 8 ft., with rigid
branches, glossy dark green leaves. Full sun, part shade. Summer.
CREPE JASMINE Tabernae divaricatamontana
Pure white. Cymes of 4-6 waxy 2 in. flowers, fragrant at dusk, after dark. Wavymargined, dark green leaves, 3-6 in. long, on spreading upright bush. Summer.

GARDENIA CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Thriving Gardenias crave sun and warmth, regular water and feeding, good soil drainage, and morning dew or misting.
PLANTING ...
Gardenias are hardy to 20°F or lower, but require summer heat to grow and bloom well. They are hard to grow in
adobe or clay soils, wanting a soil that will drain fast yet also retain water. Plant in beds or containers, using plenty of
peat moss or ground bark to condition the soil, and plant high like your Azaleas. Avoid crowding by other plants and
competing roots. Mulch instead of cultivating around plants.
WATERING ...
Water in early morning except when in bloom—unless water is high in salts (residues from this water may burn the
leaves). Where water is poor, leach salts by monthly flooding.
FERTILIZING ...
Feed every 3-4 weeks during growing season with acid plant food, fish emulsion, or blood meal. Gardenia leaves are
subject to chlorosis, a yellowing between veins usually caused by a lack of iron; treat with iron sulfate or iron chelate.
PRUNING ...
Prune to remove straggly branches or faded flowers. Use an all-purpose spray or dust to control aphids and other
sucking insect pests.

HYDRANGEAS
HYDRANGEA MACROPHYLLA
Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs characterized by large clusters of long-lasting flowers in white, pink, red, or (under certain conditions) blue.*
Flower clusters may contain all sterile flowers (conspicuous, with large, petal-like sepals) or fertile flowers (small, starry petals); or they may
feature a cluster of small fertile flowers surrounded by a ring of big sterile ones (called 'lace-cap' hydrangeas). Sterile flowers last long,
often holding up for months and gradually fading in color. Leaves are thick and shiny, coarsely toothed, and up to 8" long.
Blooming in Spring and Summer, Hydrangeas are great performers in areas where winters are fairly mild, but disappointing where plants freeze to
the ground every year; they may never bloom under such conditions, as budding is on the old wood. Hydrangeas are especially effective
in massed plantings in partial shade, or as potted plants on the patio. Fast growing in rich, porous soil, their size and form may be
controlled by pruning: cut out stems that have flowered, leaving those that have not. To get the largest flower clusters,
reduce the number of stems; for numerous medium-sized clusters, nicely spaced, keep more stems.

* Pink and red garden hydrangeas often turn blue or purple in acid soils, and blue-flowering plants from the florist may show pink flowers when
planted outside in neutral or alkaline soil.
Garden plants can be made (or kept) blue by applying aluminum sulfate to the soil; plants can be kept red, or made redder, by liming the soil, or
by applying super-phosphate in quantity. Such treatments are not effective unless started before blooming.

FERNS
Ferns have been around for millions of years, and named species worldwide number about 12,000. Their array of form, texture, and even color is
staggering; their sizes range from tiny 'clovers' to towering tree ferns. We have expanded our assortment as companion plants to our Azaleas.
Selection has been a challenge, but those in this offering have survived the Inland summers and brief freezes and proven themselves adaptable.

AUSTRALIAN TREE FERN Cyathea (Sphaeopteris) cooperi ‘Brentwood’
Massive, rapid-growing tree fern with thick trunk, full fronds. Robust in sheltered medium to high light;
prefers moist-dry garden soil or potting mix. Fairly cold hardy, but with damage to fronds.
Mature plants shed old fronds.
AUTUMN FERN Dryopteris erythrosora
Medium-sized fern with erect, slowly spreading growth. Does well in low to medium light in the shade;
prefers moist-dry soil. New growth is coppery pink, turning dark, glossy green with maturity.
 BIRD'S-NEST FERN Asplenium nidus [one of two asplenium species; also see MOTHER FERN]
Erect, undivided sword-shaped fronds rise from rosette shape from a central area; can be 2 to 4 ft. long and
3 to 8 in. wide, light green with dark brown or black midrib. Slow growing, terrestrial (on ground) or epiphytic
BRAZILIAN TREE FERN Blechnum brasiliense
Rosette-shaped fern with crinkled fronds, red upon emergence. Vigorous grower, small trunk. Prefers moist loam.
FOXTAIL FERN Asparagus densiflorus ‘Meyersii’
Evergreen, with dense, foxtail-like fronds of feathery, needle-like leaves around arching stems, rising from
central point. Grows to height of 2 ft. Best grown in shade or semi-shade. Elaborate tuberous root systems.
 GIANT CHAIN FERN Woodwardia fimbriata
Sprawling, clump-forming fern with arching fronds to 4-5 ft. Vigorous grower in moist, fertile soil, partial
shade. Largest fern native to North America.
HOLLY FERN Cyrtomium falcatum (Phanerophlebia falcata, JAPANESE HOLLY FERN)
Stiff, erect, dark green shiny fronds of holly-like leaflets. Excellent for use in containers, as ground cover,
or in shady borders or rock gardens. Grows to height of 2 ft.

LACE FERN Microlepia strigosa
Medium-large, rapid-growing clumping fern with arching, delicate-looking dark green fronds. Sturdy in full
or partial shade; prefers moist-dry soil; tolerates irregular watering. Fairly cold hardy, but will tip-burn.
Requires grooming to remove old fronds.
LEATHERLEAF FERN Rumohra adiantiformis
Medium-large, robust fern; closely spaced broad, triangular heavy-set dark green fronds give bushy
appearance. Full sun or partial shade in moist-dry garden soil. Excellent for cut use.
709
710
 MAIDENHAIR FERN Adiantum pedatum
Dainty, mid-green fronds held on thin and wiry, shiny black stems to 18 in. Spreads by thick, creeping
rhizomes. Prefers partial or full shade, acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils.
Creates light, airy texture in garden; goes dormant in drought, to return in spring.
PLANTING…
721
FERN CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Ferns need a well-drained soil mix, as you would use for most perennials. Include enough peat moss
to provide sufficient water-holding capacity, yet avoid vermiculite and or fine sand, as both tend to plug up the air spaces
that are vital for healthy root growth. Most ferns do best in a shaded landscape situation.
WATERING… Ferns, like azaleas, will not tolerate standing water. Maintain a constant moisture level—moist, but
never soggy wet —and do not allow them to dry out between waterings. It is best to water early in the day so the foliage
will dry. Over-watering and poorly draining soil cause root rot, the most prevalent problem found in perennial Ferns.
FERTILIZING… Most perennial Ferns are light feeders. Liquid fertilizers, applied on alternate waterings, or slow
release formulas may be used, but not both.
PRUNING…
Pruning is generally not necessary except to remove damaged, broken, dead, or undesirable fronds;
to control the shape, size, or spread of the plant; or to use fronds in cut-flower arrangements.

711
Graceful, arching, finely cut light green fronds with black stems. Prefers shade, regular water.
Leaflets produce plantlets which fall and start new plants.
 SILVER FERN Pteris quadriaurita ‘Argyraea’
Evergreen, erect to 2-3 ft.; dark green fronds with grey or silvery white central band or stripe.
Prefers humus-rich acidic soil; deep shade or bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun and over-watering.
722
‘SILVER LADY’ FERN a selection of Blechnum brasiliense (DWARF TREE FERN)
Beautiful symmetry with a unique palm-like appearance of light green fronds. Extremely fast grower in
light to deep shade, but brighter light will keep it more compact; requires a light, well-drained potting mix
kept evenly moist. Excellent in containers or moist tropical landscapes.
SWORD FERN Nephrolepsis cordifolia
Finely toothed, erect or arching, sword-shaped fronds rise from short, hairy leaf stems. Grows 2-3 ft. high
to 5 ft. wide. Tolerates drier, poorer soils than most ferns.
707
705
TASMANIAN TREE FERN Dicksonia antarctica
Hardiest of the large tree ferns; thick, fuzzy, reddish brown trunk to 15 ft.; spreading crown of dark green,
harsh-textured, 3-6 ft. fronds. Slow growing, easily transplanted; thrives in medium light in cool, moist soil;
will tolerate more sun with more water. Cold weather easily damages or kills fronds, but not the trunk.
713
TASSEL FERN Polystichum polyblepharum [JAPANESE TASSEL FERN]
Medium-sized fern, rich dark green fronds with silvery underside; new growth all summer. Loves cool
shade; damp, rich acidic loam. Very cold tolerant. Stunning foliage for woodland; excellent for cut use.
Requires grooming only to remove damaged fronds.

COMPANION PLANTS FOR THE AZALEA GARDEN
Azaleas prefer acid soil and some shade, so companion plants should be adaptable to acid soil and be shade tolerant.
Choose companion plants for their foliage, texture, flowers, fragrance, and fruit to make your garden interesting all year 'round.
To be compatible, it is also necessary to consider moisture needs and cold-hardiness for your area.
