Welcome to Cloud Mountain, a nonprofit community farm and
education center dedicated to providing hands-on learning
opportunities to new and experienced farmers, as well as home
gardeners. These unique educational experiences are integrated
with the management and operation of our 45-acre farm and
retail nursery.

At the Cloud Mountain Farm Center nursery we grow from the
start almost every plant or tree we sell. We start with cuttings,
seeds, or grafts to rootstock of locally adapted varieties, and
nurture each plant along, often for one or two years, before
we make them available to you for purchase.

new farmer internship program
Our new farmer internship program, now in its fourth year, offers paid interns genuine experiences in agricultural production and
management. The 8-month program instills essential skills needed for success in farming within today’s food markets and economic
environment. Graduates of the program leave with the expertise and skills to be successful starting their own farm business or to
be a key contributor at an existing operation.

Our internship is unique in many ways. We provide in-depth
experience in nursery production, as well as an unmatched
depth and scope of curriculum in tree fruits, small fruits and
vegetable production. Due to the diversity of crops grown at
Cloud Mountain Farm Center, we have an incredible range of
on-site expertise available to interns.

On February 1st between 7 and 12 new interns will kick off the
4th class of our internship program. We piloted an expansion
of the internship last season in which
we offered educational programming
to interns at other select farms. We
are excited to continue this offering
in 2016. As a non-profit we have the
ability to give interns an empowering
and fulfilling internship experience.

We help interns develop an understanding of the current local
food system in Whatcom County and Washington State so they
can better determine how to manage a successful farming
business. Part of the current market context is the growth and
opportunity in organic farming and the interest and expansion
in organic food markets. Our program aims to find creative
ways for upcoming farmers, who tend to have less access to
resources, to grow their farming business so they can compete
in the current market environment.

current projects and research at cloud mountain
We are now in our fourth year as a nonprofit with multiple programs in various stages of development. In addition to the new
farmer intern program (see page 2), we have an incubator farm program, a farmer speaker series, and we are the Whatcom County
aggregation site for the Puget Sound Food Hub. We continue to offer a wide range of community education workshops through the
nursery and to run variety and production trials for a wide range of tree fruits, berries and vine fruits as we have for over three
decades. We are inspired to innovate production and growing systems that will create new opportunities for market farmers in
the region. Below are brief descriptions of some of our projects we currently have underway. For expanded information visit our

incubator farm program
We are dedicated to maintaining and improving the local food
system and farming business in Whatcom County. Helping new
farmers get their start is a key part of that initiative. Our internship program helps with learning and experience, but access
to workable land can be a challenge for new farmers. In 2012
we purchased 20 acres of tillable land, and in 2013 we began
to make the land available to new farmers. We have four new
farm businesses leasing land and sharing in equipment use and
barn storage.
farmer speaker series
This year we will be continuing our popular Farmer Speaker
Series. These are talks and workshops given by visiting experts
in fields relevant to agriculture and geared towards farmers,
although open to all. Last year we brought in folks like Eric
Lee-Mader of the Xerces Society, Doug Collins and Andy Bary of
WSU Soil Sciences, and Jeff Dodson of The Master Gardeners
and Dodson Pathology. This year we’ll look to offer more of the
same on Thursdays from February through June. Email sean@

puget sound food hub
Cloud Mountain joined the Puget Sound Food Hub in August of
2014 as its third aggregation site, serving Whatcom County.
Today the Hub is a network of farms and partners operating
cooperatively in the Puget Sound region to market, aggregate
and distribute locally produced food from farm to restaurants,
hospitals, preschools, grocery stores, universities and more.
Buyers use the Hub’s website to buy direct from more than forty
local, sustainable farms—all with one order, one delivery, and
one payment. By using the Internet platform for orders and sales
the Hub levels the playing field, making it possible for small
farmers to have access to new and bigger markets.
Today, Whatcom area Hub farmers ranging from start-ups and
incubators to larger, successful farms, all pick, pack and deliver
their orders to Cloud Mountain. From there, it goes by refrigerated truck to customers in six counties, including the Seattle
market. This connects farmers to new buyers, saves time, and
reduces the carbon footprint by taking individual farm trucks
off the road. The Hub is strengthening connections across the
region and building community commerce. It’s an exciting opportunity. We are glad to be part of it.

overall productivity to find commercial varieties that would be
profitable for the local market farmers and enjoyable for home

Organic Fruit Growing for Homeowners
You can grow tree fruits and berries using organic practices, even in our challenging climate. Learn how to keep
your trees and berry plants healthy and productive. We’ll
discuss the common pest and disease issues of our area,

include soil and weed management and use of compost
and mulches in fruit growing. Be prepared to be outside.
GROWING FRUIT
Learn to Grow Fruit Trees
If you’re thinking about planting fruit trees, but don’t
know where to start, this is the workshop for you. We’ll

Advanced Vegetable Gardening – 5 Part Series
Registration required, space is limited.
$100 for the five part series.
This five part class is designed for intermediate to advanced vegetable gardeners looking to increase their background knowledge,
refine their skills, and get new ideas and strategies for growing
better vegetables. Topics covered will include crop planning, crop
rotation, soil fertility, composting, seed starting, season extension,
direct seeding, transplanting, weed management, pest and disease
issues, water and irrigation, high tunnels, and winter gardening. We
will also discuss in detail specific requirements and challenges for all
the main vegetable families. Included in the registration fee is the
seed and materials needed to start your own vegetable seedlings in
each session to take home for your garden. This class is a perfect
source for local, proven information to be successful at growing year
round vegetables at home. Registration required, space is limited.

Grow Grapes for Wine and Eating
We will discuss growing grapes in cool climates for wine
and eating. Cultural practices including soil requirements, pruning techniques, pest management and

Summer Propagation: Softwood Cuttings
Propagation of many woody plants is most effective during
the summer growing season, and if a few simple guidelines
are followed, softwood and semi-ripe cuttings can be
very successful. We’ll learn how to clonally propagate
plants during the growing season as we discuss timing
of cut, condition of wood, and caring for cuttings during
and after the rooting process. No registration required.

the same time. In this workshop, we’ll discuss ways to
integrate edibles into a showy landscape, and how to

Come to Cloud Mountain and learn to build a home scale
hoop house for growing tomatoes and peppers. Materials

and the experience of having built one yourself. When

Using Tunnels and Hoop Houses for Productive Gardening
You can grow great tomatoes and peppers in the Pacific
Northwest! Use of high tunnels and hoop houses can
bring you success in crops that often fail out in the open.
We’ll discuss hoop house construction, planting, pruning

Plan Your Winter Vegetable Garden Now!
At the peak of summer is the best time to plan and plant
a winter garden. Here in the Northwest, it’s possible to
grow and harvest vegetables almost year round. We’ll
discuss the types of plants you can grow, special fertility and soil requirements for winter gardening, and the
use of cloches and frost blankets to extend the harvest.

this two hour course. In addition to hands-on practicing

REGENT A recent German cross. Bred mainly
for the German organic wine industry. Regent

custom grape propagation
Cloud Mountain Farm Center propagates wine and table grapes. For those wanting larger quantities of grapes, our program is as follows.
• We propagate grapes both by grafting
and on their own roots.
• Orders must have minimum quantities of
20 per variety/rootstock combination.
• Orders with deposits are propagated on
a first come, first served basis - we have
limited bud wood of some varieties.
• Propagation is done during the months
of February and March. Orders must be
placed by January 15th.
• Orders can be reserved by placing a 50%
deposit. Balance is due upon pickup,
usually early to mid-May for cuttings,
or early June for grafted plants. All
pickup orders are charged a deposit of
$2.50 per flat in the order - refundable
when the undamaged plastic flats are
returned.
• The Washington State Wine Grape
Assessment is 5% per plant. All wine
grape orders will be charged this fee.
• Grafted grapes that need to be shipped
will be grown through the year and
shipped the following dormant season.

Conifers
Conifers are very tough plants in
Northwest gardens. They are typically
very disease resistant and winter
hardy. Insect and mite problems are
usually a sign of stress. Pay attention
to winter drainage; many conifers
will tolerate slightly wet soil, but be
very subject to wind throw in very
winter wet soil.

rhododendrons in the pacific northwest
Rhododendrons are common in
Pacific Northwest gardens as our
climate is well suited to their
growth. But many gardeners pass
them over for other shrubs, citing
their short bloom periods and gangly habits. But there are a wealth
of interesting rhododendrons that
are rarely seen in gardens that can
provide year round interest.
The diversity of foliage shape and
texture in the rhododendron family
is amazing, their habits can vary
from tiny dwarf, sun-loving shrubs
to magnificent tree forms with
gigantic leaves.
Rhododendron propagators are becoming a rare breed, with many growers retiring. Because we love this genus, at
Cloud Mountain we are expanding our propagation and growing more of our rhododendron stock. We’re experimenting
with open growing beds specifically for growing on rooted cutting of rhododendrons and other woody plants. We will
also be able to train our interns in the propagation and growing methods for this icon of western gardens. Mike and

To develop good form, all varieties
of clematis should be kept pruned
back to a height of roughly 18"-24"
the first year. This helps develop the
root system to support the top growth.
Once your clematis is established,
prune in spring. Early spring bloomers such as evergreen clematis only
need to have stray or damaged stems
cleaned out. The large flowered
clematis bloom on old and new wood,
so should be pruned back to just above
fat buds. The clematis that bloom on
new wood, such as Rouguchi and the
Yellow Bell can be cut nearly to the
ground just before growth begins in
spring.

have been used for centuries, in
brewing and in traditional medicines.
A pillow stuffed with hops flowers is
