Pike's Pick for March 10, 2007 Wheeler's Dwarf Pittosporum Pittosporum tobira 'Wheeler's Dwarf' On sale this Saturday and Sunday (March 10th and 11th) for 20% off at your local Pike Family Nurseries with locations around metro Atlanta, Birmingham, Alabama and Charlotte, North Carolina. Species Native Range: Japan Hardiness: USDA Zones 9-11 (hardy only to 20-30 degrees) Mature Size: 2-3 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide Exposure: Full sun to partial shade Soil: Moist but well-drained Ease of Culture: Moderate due to lack of hardiness in our area Wheeler's Dwarf Pittosporum is a more compact version of the common variegated varieties of Pittosporum. Reaching only a height of 2-3 feet, it sports bright green (not variegated) evergreen glossy leaves and lovely white orange-scented flowers sporadically in the spring. Use WDP near areas where the aroma of its flowers can be enjoyed. In warmer climates such as south Georgia and Florida, it can be planted as a low hedge in full sun to partial shade. In areas such as these, it can be mixed with Loropetalum, roses, Gold Mop Chamaecyparis or any number of other evergreen or flowering shrubs. In colder climates, use WDP as an evergreen focal point in large containers. Please note that this plant is only hardy to about 20-30 degrees and can suffer major damage or die if exposed to colder temperatures. Therefore, I recommend that this plant be grown in a container and moved to a protected location for the winter.
